* CatharsisFactor: Hank first emerging and getting back at the assholes who disrespected Charlie is certainly fun to watch.
* CoveredUp: Most of the soundtrack consists of popular artists of the time performing covers of lesser-known Music/SteelyDan songs.
** The soundtrack also includes Music/TheOffspring's version of {{Music/AFI}}'s "Totalimmortal", which was released as a single - At the time The Offspring had just released one of their most commercially successful albums (''Americana''), while AFI were relatively lesser-known since they were on an independent label and hadn't had any charting hits of their own yet.
* CrazyIsCool: Hank figuratively takes no prisoners and is completely unbalanced.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: At their worst, Hank's actions are played as BlackComedy.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Charlie's sons might be foul-mouthed but they're goddamn funny, smart as hell, don't take anyone's shit, and they love their dad through thick and thin...[[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch bitch]].
* FridgeHorror:
** When Hank first surfaces, one of the first things he notices is that he's carrying a gun. If Hank's response to disrespect is to nearly drown a little girl and smash a car into a barbershop, it's a good thing nobody ever took it further than that.
** Hank forgets to get Charlie's wallet from the dashboard of the car before he and Irene pushes it off into the water, which is a bit of a happy accident. Had Hank remembered to take the wallet, there's a good chance that the police would have been tracking them through Charlie/Hank and Irene's purchases with Charlie's debt or credit cards and figure out where they could possibly be heading next. That means that had Hank remembered to grab it, the bad guys would have gotten to them much sooner and they would have ended up dead.
* HarsherInHindsight: The film makes jokes about Irene's slender frame, with Charlie's sons proclaiming that their father wouldn't run off with "a skinny-leg girl", and Hank jesting that she used to develop an eating disorder and gained about 20 lbs. With the knowledge of Creator/ReneeZellweger's own WeightWoe as a result of the 20-something pound weight gain to play Literature/BridgetJones, and the [[YouAreFat press's own negative attention]] towards her [[HollywoodPudgy post-1970 Hollywood atypical curves]], and her rapid weight loss after the completion of the films, the dialogue can come off as awkward and insensitive.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** One of Charlie's sons complains about Pluto being considered a planet. Pluto was demoted in 2006, six years after the movie was released.
** The [[Creator/TraylorHoward ex-wife]] of a Creator/JimCarrey character would eventually go on to be the protagonist's wife in ''Film/SonOfTheMask''.
* JerkassWoobie: Hank. He's the one who has had to deal with all of Charlie's repressed rage for twenty years or so, and never gets out to express it. He also notes to Irene that before Charlie's wife left him, their personality was more integrated; when she left, she left both of them, and that was the point when Charlie split off the Hank personality and locked it away. While obviously no excuse for his actions, it does make you feel for him, especially when he begins crying.
* JerksAreWorseThanVillains: The movie features an incredibly crass and mean-spirited split personality, a corrupt asshole with mafia connections, and two crooked police officers. However, a few more people manage to gain the contempt of the audience:
** Charlie's cheating ex-wife and the limo driver she has an affair with. What's especially reprehensible is when they abandon their own biological children and don't even offer any child support.
** The townspeople, especially that little girl, who exploit Charlie's good nature are seen by the audience as deserving of Hank's rampage when he first emerges.
* NauseaFuel: [[spoiler: Charlie's thumb gets blown off. TheStinger shows a fish eating it.]]
* TheScrappy: Layla and her paramour who successfully cucked Charlie and leave him ''and their children'' for Charlie to raise are two people who deserved Hank's wrath with how they made him a laughingstock as well as making him raise children who aren't his...[[KarmaHoudini and they don't get that wrath]]. Needless to say, they're not at all favored by fans.
* {{Squick}}:
** When Charlie and Irene first go on the lam, Irene comes into Charlie's hotel room and sees some telltale signs that he was pleasuring himself to her picture. [[spoiler: A deleted scene reveals that he was using a watermelon.]]
** Hank bought a ''very'' large dildo once he made up his mind to bang Irene. It comes back later on, at which point Irene mentions Hank not using it on her, but on ''[[AssShove Charlie]]''.
** Charlie trying to pee post-coitus, which leads to the entire bathroom getting sprayed.
* ValuesDissonance: Several characters casually refer to Charlie as "schizo", even Irene. Aside from the fact that DID is not schizophrenia, referring to someone suffering from a mental illness as "schizo" or something similarly degrading is very offensive nowadays.
* TheWoobie:
** Charlie. The second you see his kids being born, you will feel sorry for him. It only increases as the film goes on, and you learn that the entire town is laughing at him behind his back and he knows it, but is too nice to do anything about it. Becomes a bit of an IronWoobie, because regardless of who their real father is, Charlie loves his kids. He can take abuse directed at him, but when it comes to his kids, even his doormat status prompts him to defend them without even thinking.
--->'''Guy:''' [[JustBetweenYouAndMe Just between you and me]], d'you ever notice that your kids have a year-round tan?\
'''Charlie:''' Yeah, well, my great-grandmother's half Italian.\
'''Guy:''' Half Italian. That's probably why the water beads up and rolls off the hair, huh?
** Milky/Casper/Whitey. A short-sighted albino who gets mocked for his condition on-sight. He says that Irene, Charlie and Hank (as in, one of the guys who bullied him) are his only friends and his own family ditched him. Then his "friends" leech off him at least twice and abandon him at a motel. His own family apparently hate him just for his appearance, as they moved to Phoenix, which is far too sunny for albinos. Charlie letting the poor guy live with him at the end seems like the very least he could do for him.
