!!The Comic Strip
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Several blogs, not the least of which is ''Blog/TheComicsCurmudgeon'', reinterpret Marmaduke as either a psychotic, [[EatsBabies baby-eating]] killer or a politically oriented dog or some other variation.
** Some fans also jokingly speculate that Marmaduke's owner Phil is actually UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler.
** [[http://www.29-95.com/time-suck/comic/marmaduke-explained-07-14-10 Marmaduke is an avenging angel.]]
** Some fans have suggested that rather than ComicBookTime, Marmaduke actually has superpowers that allow him to live longer than normal dogs.
* CriticalDissonance: ''Marmaduke'' is one of the most highly criticized comic strips in publication, but also one of the most widely circulated comic strips in the world with a fanbase large enough to keep United Media from canceling it.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: One of the most monotonous newspaper comics, frequently recycling the same handful of big dog jokes.
* MemeticPsychopath: Back in the comic's EarlyInstallmentWeirdness days, Marmaduke had a very different, more angular design with [[PerpetualFrowner a constant expression of disdain]] and BigOlEyebrows, and also seemed to be much more actively malicious (being actively feared by his owners and the people around them). "Early Marmaduke" or "Classic Marmaduke" is often seen as downright evil. In the creepypasta ''Dogscape'', it's implied that the dog that became the biomass covering Earth in the story was, in fact, Marmaduke himself.
* SavedByTheFans: United Media has tried to cancel the comic at least once a decade since the 1980s only for its supporters kick up enough of a fuss to get them to quickly reverse their decision.

!![[{{Film/Marmaduke}} The Movie]]
* ClicheStorm: The movie is made up of this, cramming in seemingly all of the high school and kids movie clichés. Let's see, Marmaduke moves to a new town and [[HighSchoolAU finds out the dog park works like high school with everyone in their own cliques,]] Marmaduke falls in love with [[BettyAndVeronica the popular girl]] and [[ObliviousToLove doesn't realize his female friend loves him,]] Marmaduke becomes popular and abandons his friends, the other dogs [[LiarRevealed figure out Marmaduke lied and abandon him,]] Marmaduke realizes the importance of being yourself and being cool / popular isn't worth the trouble while the dad is going through his own plot about how he should [[WhenYouComingHomeDad work so much and he needs to spend more time with his family]]... And this doesn't even cover all of it.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** This wouldn't be the [[Film/LadyAndTheTramp2019 last time]] that Creator/SamElliott would voice a dog.
** This wasn't the [[Series/TheSuiteLifeOfZackAndCody first time]], Creator/EmmaStone would voice a dog. It's also funnier, that a decade later, Stone is now [[Franchise/OneHundredAndOneDalmatians the new]] [[CruellaToAnimals Cruella]].
** The common label of the film as "Film/MeanGirls with dogs," becomes even funnier when learning that Creator/AmandaSeyfried (aka Karen Smith) [[WhatCouldHaveBeen passed on the opportunity to voice Marmaduke's love interest, Mazie]]. Speaking of Amanda Seyfried, years later, she would go on to voice [[WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy another]] [[Recap/FamilyGuyS16E10BoyDogMeetsGirlDog love interest dog]].
%%* MemeticMolester: Marmaduke.
* {{Narm}}: Mazie summed the entire movie up in a single line: "It's like high school for dogs."
