* AluminumChristmasTrees: Surely the idea of a brutal war being fought over an island that's just risen from the ocean is a fantasy narrative device used by Terry Pratchett to poke fun at the idiotic nationalism of a bygone age? The Other Wiki [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinandea disagrees!]]
* {{Anvilicious}}: A mild example, but it stands out from other ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'' stories involving ethnic conflicts such as Literature/MenAtArms, [[Literature/{{Thud}} Thud!]] and Literature/MonstrousRegiment in that it explicitly uses a FantasyCounterpartCulture of the Islamic world (Klatch) rather than shifting it to dwarfs and trolls and so forth.

** While inspecting his men after a bad storm, Vimes refers to his unit as a "Literature/MonstrousRegiment."
* TheissTitillationTheory: [[DiscussedTrope Explained thus]] when Nobby comes across some harem pants:
--> '''Vetinari''': Curiously, the purpose of the clothing of the nautch girl or the exotic dancer has always been less to reveal and more to suggest the ''imminence'' of revelation.
* TheWoobie: Poor Captain Jenkins, whose ship Vimes commandeers and then proceeds to basically smash to smithereens, on account of the fact that Vimes knows absolutely nothing about sailing. Jenkins was planning on selling weapons to the Klatchians, but still...
