* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: The movie's overt message is anti-capitalist, but they dropped some hints that the real problem is crony capitalism and that the main character's view of the system is simplistic (ie agents of the government physically stop a rich man from paying a ransom for his daughter directly to a welfare office, because it would give too much Time to the poor). This was arguably an attempt on the part of the writer to be a RuleAbidingRebel, not driving away conservatives.
* {{Anvilicious}}: This film is not at all subtle with its messages about class warfare and how CapitalismIsBad.
* CompleteMonster: [[{{Sadist}} Fortis]] is the wealthy leader of the Minutemen gang who attacks poor districts to rob people of their time for life and [[{{Greed}} take it for himself]], and at one point shoots a person InTheBack for buying a gun. When the heroes inspire the citizens to stand up against him, Fortis seeks information on them by [[EnhancedInterrogationTechniques draining random citizens of their time]] until he is given intel. Facing off against hero Will Salas, Fortis tries to engage him in a one-sided duel with his men intent to kill Will should he win and threatens to kill Will and his girlfriend after [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil raping her]] should Will refuse Fortis.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Raymond Leon. Being played by Creator/CillianMurphy helps.
* NightmareFuel:
** The fact that a person's life expectancy is used for currency.
** Think about getting arrested. In Real Life, it would mean being held for days or years. The Time Keeper told Will he would get thirty minutes for processing. Getting arrested is effectively a death sentence.
* SpecialEffectsFailure: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbg42qTWqas car crash]] was very obviously done by rolling a miniature off a cliff and touching it up with special effects. They didn't even bother putting dummies in the car.
* SpiritualSuccessor: To ''Film/{{Gattaca}}'' which is also an Andrew Niccol film about a man on the run, trying to disrupt a SlobsVsSnobs class system in a dystopian future, and which is also very noirish and [[RetroUniverse retrofuturistic]] in aesthetic.
* StrangledByTheRedString: Sylvia has been watching Will from a distance for a few days. A few hours after meeting him in person, Sylvia decides to go skinny-dipping with Will, a complete stranger at that point.
* TearJerker: Will failing to save his mom.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: A common criticism of the film is that they had an interesting concept that suffers because the world building just isn't there and is asking for some serious WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief as a result (see the Fridge and Headscratchers pages for some good examples).
