* AdaptationDisplacement: The novel is best known as the source material for ''Film/BladeRunner'', so much so that later printings of the novel were given that title.
* AlternateAesopInterpretation: Is this novel anti-AI or pro-AI? It can be interpreted either way.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Quite a bit of this as well, since we only really see Deckard's internal monologue for most of the novel. The narration is quite sparse on the thoughts of other characters, so there's one critical scene towards the climax where [[spoiler:Irmgard Baty attempts to comfort J.R. Isidore when he freaks out over a dead spider. Is it a display of empathy on Irmgard's part, or a fear reaction over an unfamiliar situation driven by self-interest? Or are those, evolutionarily-speaking, the same exact thing? How important is it - given that androids are artificial creations in the first place - when an artificial being displays an empathetic facade that's indistinguishable from the real thing? The Voigt-Kampff empathy test seen in the novel (and, famously, the film, in which it is [[SpellMyNameWithAnS spelt Voight-Kampff]]) is an attempt to do this, but it's not clear how infallible it is.]]
%% * ParanoiaFuel: As per a PKD novel. Also may count as TearJerker but YMMV. (Depends on your interpretation).
* TearJerker: Maybe you'll cry for Deckard at least once. [[spoiler:He has a notable and very serious moment of MyGodWhatHaveIDone]] Maybe you'll cry for his wife. Maybe for John Isidore, or Rachael, or the cat. Maybe you'll cry because the entire book is just that sad. It's even possible you'll weep just because the tension finally went away in the denouement. Suffice to say, you'll probably cry.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: PKD likely intended for the androids to be bio-engineered humans. This book was written during an era where genetic engineering concepts were limited to tinkering with existing life as opposed to creating life from scratch. Today, the androids of this story would more likely be called something else, just like they were in the film adaptation.
* TheWoobie: Isidore.
