2	** In the book, Penultimate Inc. built a jail whose security system was so haphazard that the whole thing opened during a lightning storm, freeing nearly all the prisoners. Then, in early 2012, a Florida jail lost track of thousands of prisoners, including several violent or sexual offenders.
3	** The FBI Agents explain to Detective Baker that the suitcase bomb was originally intended to be detonated in New York City, specifically Times Square. Baker remarks, "no great loss", and Agent Seitz objects that it's been "fixed up." Such jokes became instantly tasteless after 9/11.
4	** Barry includes a TakeThat line towards people who drive [[HummerDinger Humvees]] in South Florida, ''"as though awaiting orders to proceed to Baghdad."'' This may have been funny at the time the novel was written (1999), since the Persian Gulf War was eight years in the past, and no American troops, let alone civilians, were contemplating being deployed to Iraq. Four short years later, however...

11	** One detail regarding the subplot of [[IncompetenceInc Penultimate]] explains their immense incompetence and vileness as having been made as a shell company for anti-Castro operations, specifically taking over Cuba when UsefulNotes/FidelCastro died. Castro died in 2016.
12	** Likewise for the story Eliot was writing (in the movie) about a man trying to train birds to drop bombs on Fidel Castro.
