* CultClassic: Even thought it never enjoyed the same level of fame as ''WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry'' and ''WesternAnimation/TexAveryMGMCartoons'', the series has gained many fans in the years since. It helps that Barney himself shows up from time to time in modern ''Tom and Jerry'' productions.
* GrowingTheBeard: The early shorts were sluggisly paced and overly gentle in comedy, not to mention very derivative of Disney's shorts. When the series changed directors and started taking some cues from Creator/TexAvery ([[DenserAndWackier such as ramping up the pacing and timing]], and [[ArtEvolution giving Barney a much-needed redesign]]) the series really improved by its later years, especially under Dick Lundy's direction.
* MyRealDaddy: The series was created by [[Creator/HarmanAndIsing Rudolf Ising]], who directed his first handful of shorts. However, most people consider Dick Lundy to be the one responsible for the series GrowingTheBeard, due to his shorts having ''much'' faster pacing and funnier gags than the earlier ones (which were more sentimental, in the vein of the ''WesternAnimation/HappyHarmonies'' Ising had worked on beforehand, many of the WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts, or Creator/ChuckJones' pre-1942 work).
* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of the series; not a bad cartoon by any means, but vastly inferior to ''WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry'' and ''WesternAnimation/TexAveryMGMCartoons''. The big issue is that the series is very low key and soft in comedy tone in contrast to those other two series, even after it grew the beard. Barney himself isn't a particularly interesting protagonist, with most of the humor coming from the people or things that heckle him, and his indignated reactions to them.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Many consider "The Bear and the Beavers" this. Here's Creator/LeonardMaltin's take on it.
