* AccidentalInnuendo: In the French dub, Takaaki's name is changed to Willy, which makes it even funnier that two girls are fighting over him.
** At least it's not that bad in the European Spanish dub, where Mao's name is changed to "Coque".
* AmericansHateTingle:
** Japan hated the anime so much it was pulled from syndication. At least the manga was still popular, continuing to be published in ''Margaret'' until it was finished.
** While it's more of a BrokenBase example since the anime is popular there, a good number of French anime fans hate it for being boring.
* CommonKnowledge: For years, there were rumours that this anime had a hentai version, even though this wasn't true. These rumours are so prevelant that they're even mentioned on the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikari_no_Densetsu#Hentai_version Wikipedia page]].
* FandomRivalry: German fans often compare ''Hikari No Densetsu'' with "[[Manga/AttackNumberOne Mila Superstar]]", because the latter has more popularity in the country.
* FanPreferredCouple: Between Hikari/Takaaki and Hikari/Mao, the couple fans prefer most is...[[GayOption Hikari/Shiina]]. The is especially common in the French fandom (where it's known as Cynthia/Deborah), even though the girls are straight in canon.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff:
** Despite its high production values (being produced by Creator/TatsunokoProduction, the same anime studio that produced ''Anime/SpeedRacer''), the anime adaptation was a huge flop in its native country and was CutShort after only 19 episodes. However, in Italy, where the series was renamed ''Hilary'', the anime was extremely popular and still is to this day; they even released the manga there.
** The anime series also gained popularity in France (where the manga was also released and dubbed by Tonkami) and Spain (where Telecinco [[https://archive.wikiwix.com/cache/index2.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.infotaku.com%2FArticle1367.html has plans]] for a re-dubbing).
** In Germany, ''Hikari No Densetsu'' attained popularity from being sold on VHS tapes, after it's broadcast on channel RTL II.
** It's monumental success in Europe has a lot to do with the fact that it was deliberately broadcast during the same time as the RealLife 1988 Olympics. Sports is considered SeriousBusiness in those countries, so you can guess why it quickly became a fad amongst young people.
* MemeticMutation: In France, ''Hikari no Densetsu'' (or it's French title, ''Cynthia ou le Rythme de la vie'') has the reputation of "one of the most boring anime ever made" ([[https://youtu.be/pS9Xokt8WHo?si=CbpDUpG_V5zFTm5K&t=786 example]]). Though it was fairly popular, older French otaku have been memeing about it's low quality for years.
* ShipToShipCombat: Hikari/Takaaki and Hikari/Mao, especially since [[spoiler: the manga makes Mao her love interest and the anime makes Takaaki her love interest]].
