* {{Anvilicious}}: Lord Sutcliffe's status as an in-your-face racist isn't exactly subtle, to say the least.
* CatharsisFactor: Given just how much of a HateSink Sutcliffe is, it makes his comeuppance all the sweeter. Not only does the Doctor deck him right in the face for hurling racist insults at Bill, the sea serpent he had captured and been cruelly and greedily exploiting [[KarmicDeath makes Sutcliffe its next snack.]]
* CompleteMonster: [[AristocratsAreEvil Lord Sutcliffe]] is a [[CorruptCorporateExecutive vile businessman]] from RegencyEngland who captures an alien sea creature. Discovering [[FedToTheBeast feeding it humans]] causes the beast to defecate remains which can be [[HumanResources molded into bricks]] which burn better and cheaper than coal, Sutcliffe begins luring in innocents to kill for profit. Having done so for years and [[WouldHurtAChild including children amongst his victims]], Sutcliffe attempts to bomb the ice of the Frozen Fair to drop dozens of people to his monster.
* GeniusBonus: Those aware of the etiquette of the time period (and/or more formal etiquette in the UK that the working class Bill would most likely not be exposed to) would know that sitting down in someone else's house without being offered a seat would be considered impolite and presumptuous; combined with the fact that Bill is a working class black woman in a male aristocrat's house in Regency England, such viewers would know without doubt that Sutcliffe would NOT be pleased when he arrives to find Bill seated.
* HarsherInHindsight: The Doctor's joke response to Bill's concern about the ButterflyOfDoom potentially [[RetGone erasing her existence]] hits harder following [[Recap/DoctorWho2023CSTheChurchOnRubyRoad the Fifteenth Doctor's first encounter]] [[spoiler:when it happens to somebody he's made friends with essentially right in front of him, and he gets to see the knock-on effect first-hand.]]
* ImprovedSecondAttempt: [[Recap/DoctorWhoS29E2TheShakespeareCode The Shakespeare Code]] has received some criticism due to The Doctor's rather casual approach to racism. While he points out that there were people of colour at all levels of British society during Elizabethan England, he advises her to simply walk around as if she owns the place, and is at first genuinely confused. In this episode Bill's concerns are treated more seriously, with her initially being reluctant to so much as leave the Tardis due to her fear of what could happen to her, and 12 treats her concerns far more respectfully.
* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: ''The Doctor'', of all people, very satisfyingly responding to Sutcliffe's vile dismissive racism towards Bill by flooring him with one hell of a punch.
* SpecialEffectFailure: The ice cracking under Lord Sutcliffe and his fall into the river were less than impressive.
* StrawmanHasAPoint: Sutcliffe defends his business by pointing out that more workers die in coal mines to produce a form of fuel that is vastly inferior to the alien seamonster poop he's harvesting. While the story's implication is that he's crossed the MoralEventHorizon by ''actively'' killing people, his point that with his business fewer people die, to make a better product, is actually a rather good one, and while he's openly callous, and a racist to boot (though not unusually so for his day), his attitude as regards the expendability of human life is similar to that of some mine owners.
