* AnnoyingVideoGameHelper:
** After the player rebuilds X-PO, he develops a tendency to snark at the player, while displaying pop-ups that remind him/her which Adventure World and/or Level each character on the Toy Pad unlocks. For players who don't have trouble remembering this info, this habit could become obnoxious. Players who frequently hit the Hint Stones have to hear X-PO's snarks even more often, as he delivers one while the hint appears.
** [[ExpositionFairy Omochao]] in the ''Sonic'' Level Pack and Adventure World, although this time it is intentional.
---> '''Omochao''': You can jump across those fallen stones!\
'''Sonic''': [[DeadpanSnarker Thanks... And here I was thinking I'd just stroll through that lava.]]
* AudienceAlienatingPremise:
** The Midway Games Level Pack might have this for gamers who don't fall into the niche of feeling old enough to remember the heyday of arcades, but not too old to play toy-to-life games.
** The ''Film/Ghostbusters2016'' Story Pack dedicates six levels, an Adventure World, and a Portal Build to an OvershadowedByControversy BoxOfficeBomb with a SoOkayItsAverage critical reception. It doesn't help that said movie had a polarizing reception before it even came out, a misfortune that the game often acknowledges.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Voldemort has some appeal due to his large number of abilities, but some ''Harry Potter'' fans also find it unfair that Harry's worst enemy would become playable sooner than his buddy Ron Weasley would.
** WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls taking inspiration from [[WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls2016 the reboot]] also sounds like a mixed blessing. One one hand, it disappoints players who prefer the Classic series. On the other, it gives them [[AdaptationalSuperpowerChange at least one power they only have in the reboot]]: the Lantern Construct ability, making Buttercup's Fun Pack the cheapest way to get this rare power[[note]]compared to the Supergirl polybag, the Blossom and Bubbles Team Pack, or the Raven and Beast Boy Team Pack[[/note]].
** Lumpy Space Princess has her fans, due to her hilarious lines and animations, the former taken from then-new recordings by ''Adventure Time'' creator Pendleton Ward. However, many people think that she wasn't needed, since she's a minor character at best and is usually uninvolved with the plot. Some would've prefered to have [[MadScientist Princess Bubblegum]] or [[AnIcePerson the Ice King]] in her place.
* BrokenBase:
** The amount of licenses. Some like them for the MassiveMultiplayerCrossover aspect, while others are disappointed at the lack of many original properties in LEGO's long history. The fact that licenses still outnumber the original properties in Year 2 probably doesn't help.
** The fact the ''Sonic The Hedgehog'' Level and ''Adventure World'' is mostly consisted of stages from the [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1 original]] [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2 16-Bit]] [[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles trilogy]] with only one stage and boss from The Dreamcast Era (Being [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure Emerald Coast and Chaos]]) and the Modern Era completely missing has caused a bit of debate amongst fans. Many are happy that they are sticking with the classics, while many fans of the Dreamcast and Modern Eras (who have been annoyed by many of the Classic Era throwbacks SEGA has already done) are disappointed that the Sonic games they grew up with aren't getting their recognition and spotlight as well.
* CrackShip: In the "Who's Got Talent" trailer, Allison Brie suggests Princess Unikitty x The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, saying they're both misunderstood.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: A lot of the humour in any of the ''Portal'' levels, but especially where Cave Johnson is concerned. And especially the mantis-men quest.
* DancingBear: Outside of the MassiveMultiplayerCrossover aspects, it's just another Toys to Life game with the gameplay of a typical VideoGame/LegoAdaptationGame and a gimmick based around relocating the figures on the pad.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Gamer Kid seems to be a fan-favourite of the character roster as not only he is portrayed as an absolute FanOfThePast, but a lack of backstory besides him revealed to be a former patron of the closed-down arcade allows fans to give their own perspective.
** On a similar note, a lot of fans also love the [[VideoGame/{{Defender}} Defender Spaceship]], for being cute and its ([[HesJustHiding possible]]) [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice]] in the game's finale. Some decry [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter the wasted opportunity of making the Spaceship a physical vehicle]], espcecially since it's [[NonStandardCharacterDesign designed completely differently]] from any other vehicle in the game.
* FandomRivalry: A bitter one with ''VideoGame/DisneyInfinity'', since Disney's licenses prevented ''Franchise/StarWars'', ''Franchise/IndianaJones'' and the ''Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse'' to appear in this game, despite all three of them being staples of LEGO.
* GameBreaker: The drop-in-drop-out aspect of gameplay can cheat a few of the puzzles. One good example is a gold brick found in the Portal 2 World, with the puzzle designed for Slimer (a wave 5 character), as there is a small hatch leading to the dark room.[[note]] Slimer is the only Year One character with both the illumination abd mini-access abilities.[[/note]] However, the puzzle can easily be solved with only Wave One characters. Simply enter the dark room with a short character, and place an illuminating character on the pad, and they'll be teleported into the dark room with the player. The rest is fairly simple, and you only need to remove the tall characters from the pad to get them out of the room.
* GoodBadBugs:
** A glitch in the Mystery Dimension allowed you to play as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb28dWGY4hI any character in the game, even those you haven't bought.]] Unfortunately, it only worked within the Mystery Dimension, and any characters not on the pad get removed when you leave.
** Another glitch allowed you to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVPN_Br1L6Q Hire a Hero indefinitely]], and bring him/her to any dimension.
** A Gold Brick in the A-Team's Adventure World appears to require Raven to obtain, but with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XNYilxxyV0 precise timing]], any character can jump out of the TARDIS, and land within reach of the Brick.
* GrowingTheBeard: For the most part, the newer Level Packs have received stronger praise than the first ones (''Back to the Future'', ''The Simpsons'', and the better-received ''Portal 2''), with their longer levels and progressively more immersive Adventure Worlds. The Adventure Worlds in general became more vast in Year Two.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Clara Oswald's presence in this game after [[spoiler: her death and then sort-of revival]] in the final stretch of Series 9 of ''Series/DoctorWho'', which unfolded less than two months after this game's release and just weeks after the release of the show-specific level pack. To turn the screw even tighter for fans, Clara's final words in the main game are "Run you clever boy, and remember me," which fall into tearjerker territory for those familiar with the outcome of Series 9.
** The fact that the first two ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' packs were released around the same time the show's creators announced the series will end in 2018 could be seen as this.
** Betelgeuse warns Batman to "quit while you're ahead," as a nod to Creator/MichaelKeaton following up ''Film/Batman1989'' with [[Film/BatmanReturns only one sequel]]. Keaton eventually reprised the role again in ''Film/TheFlash2023'', a critical disaster that threatened to ruin the finances and reputation of Warner Bros. Discovery.
** Charles' absence from the ''Beetlejuice'' Adventure World unintentionally predicted ''Film/BeetlejuiceBeetlejuice'' taking place after his death.
* HeartwarmingInHindsight: The opportunity to have [[Series/KnightRider Michael Knight]] team up with [[Film/JurassicWorld Owen Grady]] and/or [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoMovie Emmet Brickowski]], both voiced by Creator/ChrisPratt, feels sweeter after ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2'' reveals Star-Lord, also played by Pratt, as a ''Knight Rider'' fan who idolized Creator/DavidHasselhoff.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Gamer Kid demonstrates the ability to become a giant. The year after the release of his Level Pack, his voice actor, Creator/JoshKeaton, became Creator/MarvelAnimation's go-to VA for [[ComicBook/AntMan Ant-Man II/Scott Lang]], who can also become a giant.[[note]]Of course, like all playable ''LEGO Dimensions'' characters, Gamer Kid can also use the Scale Keystone to shrink, one of Ant-Man's trademark powers.[[/note]]
** One of Sonic's vehicles, the ''Sonic Speedster''[[note]]or better-known to Sonic fans as ''The Speed Star''[[/note]] becomes this when he makes a car named [[WesternAnimation/SonicBoom exactly this.]] Which is made even better since its debut episode featured background music which was the ''Knight Rider'' theme.
** Many of the Disney-owned properties that had previous LEGO video games such as Marvel, ''Star Wars'' and ''Pirates of the Caribbean'' were not involved in ''Dimensions'' due to them appearing in rival game ''VideoGame/DisneyInfinity''. At the end of 2017 Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and most of their properties including ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''. Furthermore, in 2022, it was announced that the Fifteenth Doctor era of ''Series/DoctorWho'' would be an InternationalCoProduction between Disney and the Creator/TheBBC, meaning that two Disney properties are retroactively in this game.
** [[Series/KnightRider KITT]], [[Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}} Ecto-1]] and the [[Franchise/BackToTheFuture DeLorean]] are featured here. [[Film/ReadyPlayerOne In 2045, these iconic cars would inspire someone to create Ecto-88.]]
** [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoMovie Unikitty]]'s vehicle in the game is the Cloud Cuckoo Car, which was [[CanonForeigner created specifically for this game]]. Come [[WesternAnimation/{{Unikitty}} her own spin-off series]] in 2018, and [[http://unikitty.wikia.com/wiki/Unikitty%27s_Cloud_Car she now has a vehicle with a similar name and appearance]].
** One of the [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Simpsons]] levels having a secret area based on ''WesternAnimation/TheFlintstones'' is this now that, thanks to [[OfficialFanSubmittedContent LEGO Ideas]], The Flintstones is getting an actual LEGO Set.
** This game first shows Wyldstyle as she wins a dance contest in Cloud Cuckoo Land, set to "Everything is Awesome". After ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie2TheSecondPart'' [[spoiler:revealed her as part of the band that originally sang "Everything is Awesome"]], it seems that she's had a lot of experience dancing to that song.[[note]]It also feels harder to blame SoreLoser Unikitty for calling the contest "rigged".[[/note]] [=GLaDOS=] mocking Wyldstyle's hair also gains some hilarity, [[spoiler:when ''The Second Part'' reveals it as a cyan and magenta hairpiece scribbled over with a black marker]].
--->[[spoiler:"I used to sing and dance, and have colorful hair, and I even '''loved''' 'Everything is Awesome'!"]]
** Having [[Creator/ChrisPratt Emmet and Owen Grady]] [[ActingForTwo interacting with one another]] becomes a lot funnier as of ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie2TheSecondPart''. Emmet interacts with Rex Dangervest, an ActionGenreHeroGuy who has a raptor squad, just like Owen, and is ''also'' voiced by Chris Pratt, [[spoiler: and who later turns out to be Emmet's future self.]]
** Bring Sonic to the ''Lord of the Rings'' adventure world - a collect-a-thon open sandbox with realistic fields of greenery - [[https://twitter.com/sparklystudios/status/1469448803241852928 to get yourself a prototype of]] ''VideoGame/SonicFrontiers''.
** The notion of Data visiting other dimensions with his homemade inventions and technical expertise in tow now sounds similar to ''Series/Loki2021'', in which [[Creator/KeHuyQuan Data's original actor]] portrays an inventor and repairman working for the TVA.
** In the ''VideoGame/Portal2'' Level Pack "Aperture Science", Cave Johnson appears as a very mechanical Core, with his researchers being more successful with their BrainUploading tech in the 80's era but somehow got stuck in a locked room, which is a reference to a scrapped idea where Cave Johnson would've ended up in a similar situation. Much later in ''VideoGame/ApertureDeskJob'', [[spoiler:this would be revisited with much less success where Cave did get a robot vessel like he wanted, but he was stuck with a gigantic robot head which couldn't move and got stuck in a room like his Core form.]]
* ItsShortSoItSucks: The ''Film/BackToTheFuture1'' Level Pack's Story Mode has received this complaint, cutting out so much of the plot that one can play through the four areas[[note]]five if the player can find the secret path to the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance, which marks the only appearance of either of Marty's parents[[/note]] in only 30 minutes. Doubles as TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot for serious ''BTTF'' fans. Thankfully, the Level Packs from ''Doctor Who'' onwards are considerably longer.
* JunkRare: Green Arrow's abilities are Target, Pole Vault, Grapple, and Acrobatics. Kind of underwhelming for someone who's limited edition.
* JustHereForGodzilla
** The figures used to play the game also work as standard LEGO minifigures in every way, leading to many skipping the game and just going for the character packs, particularly since several of the licenses acquired for the game got into LEGO form for the very first time this way, such as ''Portal'', ''The Wizard of Oz'', ''E.T.'' and ''Doctor Who'' (although a ''Doctor Who'' building set was released later, the figure for the Doctor used in ''Dimensions'' is actually different, so for collectors wanting both versions, plus K-9, a Cyberman, and a mini-TARDIS, none of which are included in the other set, buying the ''LEGO Dimensions'' packs is the only option).
** The announcement of the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' level pack inspired a lot of Sonic fans to pick up the game. Given the pedigree of Traveller's Tales's LEGO games, and the inconsistent quality of Sonic games, many Sonic fans proclaimed this to be the best Sonic game released in years.
* LastLousyPoint:
** The certain puzzles that can only be solved by a character with that ability and the ability to dive due to their underwater placement.
** Generally any ability exclusive to vehicles and/or gadgets can count as this if playing with no additional content as they can't be bought with Hire-a-Hero.
** Before Lego finished releasing all of the characters, any Gold Brick or Minikit requiring someone whose release date seemed either far away, or unknown, could cause frustration.
* LowTierLetdown: Marty [=McFly=] is often mocked for his uselessness relative to the rest of the cast, as he [[CripplingOverspecialisation only has one ablility]]: Sonar Smash, an ability most of the other characters have in addition to their other abilities, and which the Batmobile (which comes in the starter pack) can also be upgraded to have. He's not even worth using for the [=DeLorean=]'s time traveling abilities, as Doc Brown's Time Train also has that ability. Thus, his only real use is that he comes with a level that's required for 100% completion.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound
** The [[Series/DoctorWho TARDIS]] materializing, [[spoiler:especially when the Doctor pulls a BigDamnHeroes moment at the climax of the game.]]
** All of the sound effects that return from the ''Portal'' games, like the Aperture Science switches, the portals and portal gun, the turrets, and [=GLaDOS=] herself.
** Every single sound-effect from the Sonic Dimensions level or from Sonic himself.
** In LEGO City, a snazzy guitar riff goes off whenever the player obtains a Gold Brick.
* NintendoHard: Some areas are this to new players, because the game is ''very'' unforgiving to those who aren't familiar with how LEGO video games work.
** Averted with regards to the actual physical construction. Not everyone has the aptitude to build Lego; fortunately the game is set up in such a way that you can still play the main game and the expansion packs without actually having to build anything (though it's helpful to at least build the characters as it's easier to keep track).
* OlderThanTheyThink:
** It's not the first time Traveller's Tales has worked with Sonic - they were behind ''VideoGame/Sonic3DBlast'' and ''VideoGame/SonicR''.
** The revised Vorton hub theme has a MusicalNod to a theme from an earlier LEGO game: it's played during Asgard scenes in ''LEGO Marvel Super Heroes''.
* OneSceneWonder: Amy showing up to give the last Chaos Emerald to Sonic at the end of his campaign.
* PortingDisaster: The Wii U Version became this after The Shard Update. If you don't have an external USB hard drive for your Wii U the game can be stuck in the Battle Arena 4 player split screen in regular levels and adventure worlds. Even with an external hard drive, the game's framerate can stutter and lag. It doesn't help matters that the game won't connect to the ''LEGO Dimensions'' server either which means you can't download the content for any Wave 6 onwards pack you buy. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIpgAuDmNKs YouTuber Just2Good demonstrated these issues in a video]] and you could see quite a few Wii U players experiencing these issues on the ''LEGO Dimensions'' Website/{{Miiverse}} as well. Several versions of the game have become this as well starting following post-Shard updates, with users on multiple platforms reporting frequent game crashes and even some cases of progress-blanking and save file corruption.
* ReplacementScrappy: Fans of [[Franchise/{{Batman}} Alfred]] do ''not'' like [[AscendedExtra Excalibur Batman]].
* TheScrappy:
** [[Film/JurassicWorld The ACU]], while not ''hated'', is usually treated as a boring character, whose character slot could've been filled by ''anyone else''. For context, he's a generic RedShirt in a game where almost every other character is iconic in some way or form. The only thing he really brings to the game is the Gyrosphere, a vehicle that could've easily been provided by Claire instead.
** [[Film/Ghostbusters2016 Abby Yates]] got this status, because of her haughty remarks towards the original Ghostbusters and Harry Potter, and sounding nothing like her original actress. Despite these, her status as the first character with the Charge Transfer ability makes her necessary for 100% completion.
** [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie Excalibur Batman]] is regarded as a wasted character slot, since he's [[MovesetClone too similar to Batman]], it's believed that he's only in the game since he [[MerchandiseDriven couldn't get a physical release otherwise]] and some people think he [[ReplacementScrappy took Alfred's place]] in the game. [[CoolHorse His vehicle]], however, is less disliked.
** [[WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo Beast Boy]], already hated in his own show, continues to be a despised character in this game, though for different reasons. He's been greatly toned down, but he also never reaches his full potential since his Shapeshift ability [[AdaptationalWimp has been nerfed for no good reason]], when Jake is fully capable of using ''his''.
* ScrappyMechanic:
** The hopping roulette bricks (officially called "Stud Chests") that appear everywhere, especially in the open worlds. Timing it properly can get you lots of studs and a [[GameBreaker huge edge]] on the level/world's "Rule Breaker" goal, but more often than not, you'll only get silver studs that hardly make a dent in your meter instead of the truly helpful purple studs. Without these bricks, it can take over 30 minutes to achieve Rule Breaker in the open worlds, as practically everything will need to be destroyed and some puzzles might have to be redone for the purple-stud reward. A Red Brick found in LEGO City helps slow down the roulette, making obtaining purple studs a matter of patience rather than timing.
** Some argue that the Toy Pad only having seven slots is this, as it makes specific puzzles more difficult than they should be with seven characters. Others point out that ''this is exactly the point'', since the game never encourages the player to clutter the Toy Pad. However, both sides tend to agree that the middle section really is too small in comparison.
* SpecialEffectFailure: Vigo in the Ghostbusters world looks more like a sepia video screen due to lacking a background in the portrait and having the same 3D shading as the outside characters.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong:
** The actual ''Simpsons'' theme tune doesn't appear in this game due to legal reasons pertaining with FOX.
** The music that plays in the arcade basement in Retro Wreckage sounds a lot like the ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'' underground theme.
** [[SuperDrowningSkills Barring one exception]], none of the Genesis-era ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' music tracks appear in the game for various legal reasons[[note]]The rights to the ''Videogame/SonicTheHedgehog1'' and ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2'' soundtracks belong to composer Masato Nakamura rather than Sega and WB was unwilling to pay him royalties unlike Creator/{{Nintendo}} with ''Videogame/SuperSmashBros'', while part of the ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'' soundtrack is tangled up in a legal snarl involving Music/MichaelJackson's estate[[/note]]. Thus most of the music was either this or simply taken from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', or ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog4''.
** "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" and the ''Beetlejuice'' theme don't sound exactly the same in this game -- even though Warner Bros. owns both of those movies.
* TakeThatScrappy: Omochao shows up in the Sonic Level Pack. [[RunningGag As per tradition]] in later games, a lot of physical violence ends up heading their way.
* ThatOneLevel: Collecting all the Gold Bricks in Sonic the Hedgehog's Adventure World can prove a challenge, depending on how quickly you can learn to speed Sonic through the wildly varying terrain. The camera's movement also often becomes janky.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Fans of someone playable only through the Character Switch ability (e.g., Doctors #1-11, a Ghostbuster who didn't get top billing in his or her respective movie) would probably feel disappointed if they can't find a physical minifigure of that character, or if completing a franchise's team seems either more costly or less convenient than if Lego sold more Fun or Team Packs for the franchise in question.[[note]]For instance, if you want Newt Scamander and Jacob Kowalski to visit worlds outside of the ''Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'' story together, you'd need to either buy two ''Fantastic Beasts'' Story Packs, or buy one pack, then order an extra Newt Toy Tag.[[/note]]
** Some people thought that Beast Boy's ability to shapeshift, similarly to Jake, would [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap save him from being an annoying character]]. Too bad that he doesn't have the shapeshift ability, but rather turns into the respective animal whenever he encounters a specific puzzle, or a bird when the player pushes "jump" twice. The removal of [[HulkingOut his gorilla form]] is also heavily criticized, since it's his most iconic form.
** Generally, pick any character that isn't playable yet, despite the importance of them in their respective media. Especially for the worlds that have only one character, like ''Film/TheWizardOfOz'' or ''[[Creator/MidwayGames Midway Arcade]]''. As a singular character, the absence of a playable Alfred has gotten the most criticism, because of his importance in ''WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie'' and [[Franchise/{{Batman}} the franchise]] overall.
** The fact that Ron Weasley has ''zero'' presence in the game, not even as an NPC, is still a sore point for many ''Harry Potter'' fans, years after the game has ended.
** Despite the Joker's high importance in ''The Lego Batman Movie'', he doesn't share Batman's quality of being playable through the regular DC Comics variant's tag, and is instead entirely nonplayable. He also fails to appear in the hub world, effectively disappearing after the final level of the story pack.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** Some fans' feelings towards the game is that LEGO is wasting what could have been a big crossover between their own original themes (including fan-favorite "evergreen" themes such as ''Toys/LEGOPirates'', ''Toys/LEGOSpace'', and ''Toys/LEGOCastle'') by instead focusing almost entirely upon licensed themes. The only exceptions included ''WesternAnimation/{{Ninjago}}'', ''WesternAnimation/LegendsOfChima'', ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie'', and ''VideoGame/LEGOCityUndercover''. They also included ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOBatmanMovie'', which is somewhat complicated because while the movie is original to LEGO, Franchise/{{Batman}} himself isn't. %%Do not list The LEGO Batman Movie as an exception to licensed themes, since Batman is not an original LEGO property.
** A race scene featured in the Goonies Level Pack features several vehicles including a few guests from participating franchises taking part. While some vehicles that can be used ingame were given a larger redesign making them more detailed, some fans were disappointed by the fact that K.I.T.T. still appears in his ingame form, despite K.A.R.R. in the Knight Rider Adventure World having a larger and more realistic model.
** The worlds of ''Film/JurassicWorld'', ''WesternAnimation/LegendsOfChima'', and all of the Year Two franchises don't actually factor into the story. While ''Jurassic World'' was the last VideoGame/LEGOAdaptationGame, not being able to summon the T-Rex with the Locate keystone is downright ''criminal''.
** The plot point of Gamer Kid turning into [[VideoGame/{{Rampage}} George]] at the end of the Midway Arcade Level Pack could've actually been part of Gamer Kid's moveset. George could've been utilized as his SuperMode, or alternatively, every single ability could've been provided by a different character [[note]] SuperStrength would be [[KillerGorilla George]], SuperSpeed would be [[VideoGame/{{Gauntlet}} Thief]], Laser would be Robotron Hero and Invisibilty would be Spy Hunter [[/note]], making Gamer Kid a VoluntaryShapeshifter.
** Harry Potter's charge attack is the Patronus Charm, and the Harry Potter world includes the tunnel where the dementors attack in the fifth book. Despite this combination, no dementors appear.
** The thought of having male and female Ghostbusters fight evil side-by-side sounds less appealing when the only interactions they have include Abby[[note]]again, not even voiced by Melissa [=McCarthy=][[/note]] insulting the original jumpsuit and Ecto-1. Creator/IDWPublishing would later rectify this with two team-ups in ''ComicBook/GhostbustersIDWComics''.
** Likely owing to ProductionLeadTime for the Ninjago world, but the most recent season at the time of the game's announcement having a crystal that allowed people to jump from one world to another, even showing two characters briefly in the world of Chima, was not used in any capacity in this game.
* ToughActToFollow: The Starter Pack's Story Mode ties most of the Year One dimensions together in such an epic MassiveMultiplayerCrossover, that several collectors have expressed disappointment that for Year Two, the developers seem to focus more on simply adding new dimensions, then on linking them together. It doesn't help that none of the new levels expanded on TheStinger of the Story Mode. (Denizens of other dimensions at least often appear in the cutscenes, but mostly in a brief and inconsequential manner.)
* UnexpectedCharacter:
** [[VideoGame/Portal2 Chell]] and [[Series/DoctorWho the Doctor]] both have their own packs and levels. The first in particular, due to already being in her own series of games. ''The Wizard of Oz'' was another unexpected license, especially since the sets were rejected in the LEGO Ideas phase.
*** Speaking of ''Doctor Who'', while appearances from fan favorite monsters like the Daleks, Cybermen, and the Weeping Angels were expected and characters from the Twelfth Doctor's era such as Clara or Missy were guaranteed, nobody would have expected an appearance from [[Series/{{Torchwood}} Captain Jack Harkness]], as he hadn't shown up in the show's then-incumbent Creator/StevenMoffat era.
** And in terms of non-playable characters, [[spoiler: [[Film/TwoThousandOneASpaceOdyssey HAL 9000]]'s]] cameo in the ''Portal'' level.
** As for unexpected locations, the two ''Simpsons'' levels (main story and Level Pack) have TARDIS stations that lead to [[spoiler:the homes of WesternAnimation/TheFlintstones and WesternAnimation/TheJetsons, respectively]].
*** Speaking of unexpected locations, who would've predicted a secret area in the ''Fantastic Beasts'' pack based on [[spoiler:''Series/RedDwarf'']]?
** In the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' Adventure Pack, one of the boss battles has Sonic facing Robo Sonic, who hasn't been seen since ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2'', and Mecha Sonic, who hasn't been seen since ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles''.
** The ''[[Film/MissionImpossibleFilmSeries Mission: Impossible]]'' level has [[spoiler:Benji Dunn]] as the Citizen-In-Peril, even though he didn't appear until ''Film/MissionImpossibleIII''. Adding to the surprise, the player doesn't hear his cries for help[[note]]newly recorded by Creator/SimonPegg[[/note]] until after he/she actually finds him.
** While people who have seen ''The LEGO Batman Movie'' first would know that [[spoiler:the guest villains, including [[Franchise/TheMatrix Agent Smith]]]] all show up, the story pack contains one extra cameo that didn't occur in the film: [[spoiler:Morpheus, escaping from a gang of Agents.]]
