%% Please don't add Character Derailment. It's considered to be Flame Bait.
* AntiClimaxBoss: Though not easy, both [[TrueFinalBoss Athena and Red Arremer]] are considered easier than [[FinalBoss Serious Mr. Karate and Shin Akuma]]. This is mainly because they are easier to approach in close combat and are more gimmicky fighters (Athena's specials are almost all Supers, and Red Arremer is a BulletHell-style zoner) in addition to not having good reversal options at close range. Meanwhile, both Serious Mr. Karate and Shin Akuma have a {{Shoryuken}} to punish close combat mistakes, have access to Supers that don't cost meter like Athena, ''[[MasterOfAll and]]'' have pretty good zoning capabilties like Red Arremer (Shin Akuma having his usual double Zankuu Hadouken and a cost-free version of the Messatsu Gou Hadou, Serious Mr. Karate having free Haou Shikou Kens -- and triple versions of it). This difficulty drop can likely be explained by the fact that you only get one chance to defeat Athena and Red Arremer.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: Amidst all the complaints about the game looking so-so, many can agree that the Creator/{{Capcom}} characters look very nice in this game. A particular standout is [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} Demitri Maximoff]], who sports a sinister redesign that some fans even prefer to his original spritework.
* BrokenBase: While this game does not have the legacy or acclaim of ''VideoGame/CapcomVsSNK2MarkOfTheMillennium'' or ''VideoGame/SNKVsCapcomTheMatchOfTheMillennium'', there is a group of players who will argue that ''SVC Chaos'' does have merits, even compared to its contemporaries. For starters, ''SVC Chaos'' features unique pre-fight dialogue for [[DevelopersForesight every single combination of playable characters]], including the alternates (Serious Mr. Karate, Orochi Iori, Violent Ken, and Shin Akuma) ''and'' {{Mirror Match}}es. The playable cast also draws from more sources than other games in the series, with characters from ''VideoGame/MetalSlug,'' ''VideoGame/{{Athena}}'', ''VideoGame/MegaManZero'', and ''VideoGame/GhostsNGoblins'' making their ''[[VideoGame/CapcomVs Vs.]]'' series debut. Where the BrokenBase comes in is whether the game executes these concepts well or if they make up for the rather divisive gameplay mechanics and visuals.
* EnjoyTheStorySkipTheGame: The gameplay itself is seen as nothing special, but the game having dialogue for every possible matchup, ''including {{Mirror Match}}es'', makes for a very entertaining playthrough at the least. It helps that, despite the large amount of story text, it's surprisingly well-translated given that Creator/{{SNK}} games have historically been known for [[BlindIdiotTranslation shaky English translations]].
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** [[Franchise/TheKingOfFighters Goenitz's]] [[GenderBender Midnight Bliss]] design, who became known as [[https://snk.fandom.com/wiki/Goeniko Goeniko]] [[FanNickname among fans]]. The design was so popular that SNK would officially make her an independent character by sticking her in a ''KOF'' pachislot title and the ''[[VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters98 '98 UM Online]]'' mobile game. A similar feat would happen with the Midnight Bliss version of Terry, who was so popular with artists and cosplayers that she was added to ''VideoGame/SNKHeroinesTagTeamFrenzy''.
** Violent Ken is an OriginalGeneration incarnation of Ken based on his depiction in ''Anime/StreetFighterIITheAnimatedMovie'', specifically when Bison takes control of Ken's mind and makes him fight Ryu. Beyond serving as a quasi-CanonImmigrant for a very beloved piece of ''Franchise/StreetFighter'' media, Violent Ken also [[DivergentCharacterEvolution set himself apart from]] other (evil) {{Shotoclone}}s with moves like the Rasetsu Kyaku (a [[FlashStep dashing teleport]] special), the Kuzuryu Reppa (a combination of the Shippu Jinraikyaku, Shoryureppa, and Shinryuken, originally Ken's [[LimitBreak Meteor Combo]] in the ''[[VideoGame/StreetFighterEX EX]]'' series), and the Shinbu Messatsu (a Ryuko Ranbu-esque autocombo in the vein of SNK characters), garnering more intrigue from players. Many years later, he would appear in a mainline title via ''[[VideoGame/StreetFighterII Ultra Street Fighter II]]'' as well as briefly serve as an Enemy Unit in ''VideoGame/ProjectXZone 2''.
* EpilepticTrees: Some of Violent Ken's attacks spawn the signature skull pillar effect used by characters with Orochi power in the ''KOF'' series. This is never elaborated on and has spawned multiple theories, even with Capcom's official profile for him in ''VideoGame/StreetFighterV'' indicating that, much like [[Anime/StreetFighterIITheAnimatedMovie his inspiration]], this form is result of Bison imbuing and brainwashing Ken with Psycho Power.
* ItsHardSoItSucks: The game's Arcade Mode is infamous for its difficulty. The A.I. (even for non-boss characters) tends to read commands, often perfectly timing Supers and AntiAir attacks. To get an ending requires beating the first seven stages with at least five Super or Exceed finishes and without losing a round (though you are allowed to use continues), and fighting three SNKBoss characters [[BossBonanza in a row at the end]]. The first one is fought at Stage 7, so losing a round is not allowed, and you only get one try to defeat the TrueFinalBoss.
* GameBreaker: Zero and Geese. Getting cornered by either of them is very hazardous to your health. Geese in particular is notorious for an extremely strong moveset with several easy and viable infinites.
* HarsherInHindsight: Sagat's intro against Orochi Iori has him wonder if he's bound for a similarly grim fate as Iori is. An already harsh and introspective bit of dialogue (for this game at least) becomes much worse when taking Sagat's ''VideoGame/StreetFighterV'' story into account, which reveals he's ''very'' susceptible to the [[KillingIntent Satsui no Hadou]].
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
** [[http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/neogeo/c/svcgui.htm Guile]], [[http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/neogeo/c/svcdha.htm Dhalsim]] and [[http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/neogeo/c/svcken.htm Ken's]] endings have them reuniting with their families after all of their fights.
** [[http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/neogeo/c/svcshi.htm Shiki's ending]] has her [[spoiler:[[ParentalSubstitute finding and adopting a baby]], who may or may not be her kid Mikoto]].
* HilariousInHindsight: [[GenderBender Demitri's use of Midnight Bliss on Terry]] was the first appearance of the latter's [[VideoGame/SNKHeroinesTagTeamFrenzy female form]].
* JerkassWoobie: Yeah, Kasumi, we know you miss your dad and you're looking for him, but does that license you to be rude to most everyone that crosses your path?
* JustHereForGodzilla: One of the game's most appealing aspects is getting to see Capcom's characters in the ''KOF'' visual style. Another is the fighting game debut of Violent Ken, a BrainwashedAndCrazy version of Ken Masters heavily drawing from ''Anime/StreetFighterIITheAnimatedMovie''.
* NightmareFuel: The fight against Red Arremer takes the player to Hell, and [[https://i.imgur.com/QkUS63B.gif it's not a pretty sight.]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M1Ay4cZPaI Or sound, for that matter.]]
* OlderThanTheyThink: This game marks the first appearance of Terry and Goenitz's popular gender flipped incarnations, as detailed above, as well as the ''Vs.'' series debut of Red Arremer/Firebrand, years before he would appear in ''[[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3]]''.
* SignatureScene:
** The FinalBoss against Shin Akuma or Serious Mr. Karate at the Guardian-Dogs Temple. It is especially striking since it changes the color of both fighters sprite art to reflect the burning pyre in the middle of the stage.
** Athena and Red Arremer turning their defeated opponents into animals and demons respectively.
* SoOkayItsAverage: The game's system is pretty bare-bones compared to the other Capcom/SNK crossover fighters with their Groove System, and the graphics go the RealIsBrown route, making the game look pretty dull. It's not a ''bad'' game, it just needed more polish.
* SpecialEffectFailure: Keen-eyed viewers will note that there's a lot of [[LazyArtist recycled and traced-over sprite art]] in this game. For example, many of Balrog's sprites were repurposed from Heavy D's appearance in ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters98''.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong:
** The song for the Power Generation Room stage sounds kind of like [[VideoGame/UnrealTournament "Foregone Destruction"]].
** The train stage theme is a rather odd rearrangement of Geese's theme.
* ToughActToFollow:
** The game was criticized for lacking the depth and complexity of ''VideoGame/CapcomVsSNK2MarkOfTheMillennium'' or even SNK's own ''VideoGame/SNKVsCapcomMatchOfTheMillennium'', especially among more hardcore fighting game fans.
** The graphics and backgrounds couldn't compete with ''Capcom vs. SNK 2'''s, which were released on Creator/{{Sega}}'s more advanced NAOMI arcade system, as ''SVC Chaos'' was bound by the Platform/NeoGeo's hardware limitations.
* UnexpectedCharacter:
** Demitri, not so much due to a lack of recognition, but certainly because [[BreakoutCharacter Morrigan and Felicia]] are Capcom's [[WolverinePublicity go-to choices]] for ''VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}}'' representation in their crossovers, [[SidelinedProtagonistCrossover with Demitri often left in the dust]]. ''SVC Chaos'' marks one of the rare times neither female Darkstalker is present in ''any'' capacity.
** Zero, particularly his incarnation from the ''VideoGame/MegaManZero'' series as opposed to his better-known design from the ''VideoGame/MegaManX'' series, considering that this game marked his very first appearance in a fighting game. This is perhaps justified as this game was released when the ''Zero'' series was in full swing.
** Tessa, once again owing to how [[VideoGame/RedEarth her home game]] [[NoExportForYou had not seen a home release outside of Japan]] (and wouldn't for [[LateExportForYou nearly another 20 years]] after this game). While she ''did'' previously appear in ''VideoGame/SuperGemFighter'', few were expecting her to show up in a cross-company crossover fighter over more recognizable characters from Capcom's stables.
** ''VideoGame/SamuraiShodown'' characters are staples of every SNK crossover, but to see Earthquake of all characters chosen to represent the series is quite the surprise, to say the least. Even more so given that [[TheHero Haohmaru]] and [[SeriesMascot Nakoruru]] are nowhere to be found.
** Any character from ''VideoGame/MetalSlug'' making an appearance was going to be a shock given the games are RunAndGun shooters as opposed to fighters, but having the Mars People (a well-known but generic enemy) over [[TheHero Marco Rossi]] or [[BreakoutCharacter Fio Germi]] was the biggest surprise.
* VindicatedByHistory: While the game received lukewarm reviews in its time, it has been viewed in a more positive -- if still flawed -- light in the years since. For example, many consider the graphics to have aged like a fine wine, and ''SVC Chaos''[='s=] mechanics, atmosphere, and roster selection are noted to work better when the game is looked at as a complement to [[VideoGame/CapcomVsSNKMillenniumFight2000 its Capcom]] [[VideoGame/CapcomVsSNK2MarkOfTheMillennium counterparts]] as opposed to [[ToughActToFollow a direct follow-up]].
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome:
** Demitri's sprite set is considered by many fans to be the best in the game. [[LeanAndMean He's taller and a bit leaner]] than in [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} his home series]], has a darker color palette, and the details on his demonic form are more emphasized. These aspects all give him a much more sinister and menacing appearance, fitting for a vampire lord.
** Mars People is seamlessly animated in much higher detail than in ''VideoGame/MetalSlug''. There are multiple animations and attacks that have every one of its dozen tentacles moving, including its standing animation.
