* CriticalDissonance: Her three albums with the Scene and ''Stars Dance'' received middling reviews from critics but still sold extremely well, with all of the former going Gold.
* EvenBetterSequel: ''Rare'' gets higher marks than ''Revival'', with some critics declaring it her best album.
* FandomRivalry:
** Her fans and Music/MileyCyrus's fans don't really get along, though both artists are good friends.
** Since their final break-up, her fanbase and Music/JustinBieber's fanbase have been feuding. Even when they were together though, it wasn't uncommon for Selena's fanbase to be hostile to Bieber's due to his massive HateDom and HypeBacklash, while she was herself targeted by his fanbase for YokoOhNo reasons.
* LesYay: The music video for "Bad Liar" ends with the teen giving a LongingLook at a photo of her (female) gym teacher. Interestingly, [[ActingForTwo both are played by Selena Gomez]].
* SpiritualSuccessor: To Music/HilaryDuff, playing her counterpart in a movie, following her path musically and having a similar approach to managing the press and her private life.
** She can also be considered one to Music/JenniferLopez.
* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel:
** ''Revival'' is this for a majority of critics, compared to her previous album as a solo artist. This was the first album with Selena had a significant role in it's production and writing, so much so that she considers this as her first solo album and ''Stars Dance'' is filed under CanonDiscontinuity.
** For her time with The Scene, "Naturally" is the only single that receive any favorable reaction from critics.
* SugarWiki/SweetDreamsFuel: "Good for You"; everything from the production to her singing is just so beautiful and flows so fluidly together, although Music/ASAPRocky's verse might have killed the flow a bit. This is probably why there's a version without him in it.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids:
** In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7EvyVEt3LU "Hit The Lights"]], a song on ''When The Sun Goes Down'', she swears. Twice. (Although it was just "damn".)
** The lyrics of "Birthday" are [[DoubleEntendre highly questionable]], and there are various [[TheImmodestOrgasm moans]] peppered throughout the song.
** In "Like a Champion" she actually says "sexy".
** The last few seconds of the "Round And Round" video show one of the spies following Selena around holding on to a metal railing for dear life. His hand slips, the spy apparently falling to his offscreen death as Selena blows out a match.
** The songs "Same Old Love" and "Camouflage" use the word "shit" in the chorus.
%%** Rock God is also hardly wholesome.
%%** If you ask what Whiplash is about, most people will respond with "sex".
%%** If you thought "Slow Down" was about slowing down a song, think again.
