Context YMMV / Keijo

Go To

* AudienceAlienatingPremise: It is actually a pretty entertaining sports series, with decent character development. The problem is that the sport depicted on it involves pretty women in bikinis fighting on water-floating platforms, trying to incapacitate each other by only using their breasts and butts.
* BadassDecay:
** The Goketsu are introduced as godlike athletes who have strength most of the Keijo world could never reach, having never lost a single combined match in five years, and threatening the longevity of the sport by their dominance, but two of them (Kujaku and Hoshide) are defeated by Sayaka and Mio in their first and only fight, and Rindou loses to ''Non'', of all people!
** The S- and A-rank fighters are supposed to represent the culmination of years of training, experience, and sacrifice. They are all easily defeated by the rookies, mostly offscreen.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: The main thing most people know about this series is that it's about girls beating each other up with their boobs and butts.
* FandomEnragingMisconception: Accusing the show of being solely fanservice with no substance, with fans defending it by pointing out that other fanservice-heavy franchises don't get this much hate, and that ''Keijo!!!!!!!!'' is actually very well-written and character-driven.
* FanNickname: ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure KeiJoJo!!!!!!!]]'' has come from the frequent comparisons to ''[=JoJo's=] Bizare Adventure''.
* FriendlyFandoms:
** A number of fans of ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'' have taken a liking to ''Keijo!!!!!!!!'', importing their memes and jokes into the show's fandom. It might have something to do with the RefugeInAudacity of both shows in areas such as explanations behind abilities or over-the-top execution.
** Some fans of ''Anime/KillLaKill'' have also taken a liking to ''Keijo!!!!!!!!'', due to both being similarly over the top parodies of the {{Ecchi}} genre.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: According to {{Website/Crunchyroll}}'s statistics, this show was the most watched Fall 2016 simulcast in nine states in the United States and fifteen countries in Europe.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** The sport's name is a reference to the betting pools commonly found in horse races ("Keiba"). ''VideoGame/UmaMusume'', a game all about racehorse girls, is probably the closest thing to a literal version of "Keijo" we can get.
** All the comparisons with ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'' become this when the anime adaptation's director, Hideya Takahashi, went on to co-direct the anime adaptation of ''[=JoJo's=]'' ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureGoldenWind Golden Wind]]''.
* JustHereForGodzilla: As mentioned above, there are plenty of people who checked out the series just for the appeal of sexy girls fighting each other in swimsuits [[AssKicksYou using only their boobs and butts.]]
* MemeticMutation:
** "[=KeiJoJo's=] Bizarre Adventure!!!!!!!!" [[labelnote:explanation]]A common nickname for the series. It's gotten to the point where the subtitles for each part of ''Keijo'' is given a punny title like ''Part One: Fanny-ton Blood'', ''Part Two: Butt-le Tendency'', and ''Part Three: Starbust Crusaders''. On Website/YouTube, people have even combined footage from the show with audio clips from ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'', [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlEzmThYsTg with]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkMKYotY4MA hilarious]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOr9s7Na8m8 results]].[[/labelnote]]
** Keijo is a Sports Anime [[labelnote:explanation]]Because of the series' heavy fanservice and silly premise, there are those who uses this saying tongue-in-cheek.[[/labelnote]]
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zAJpnrHImk NYOOOOM]]"[[labelnote:explanation]]The scene where Nozomi is distracted and instructor Miku launches [[ChuckingChalk chalk]] into her forehead has been a popular source of video remixes, often with a clip of Neil deGrasse Tyson making the aforementioned sound in between clips to make it look like he's helping launch Miku's chalk.[[/labelnote]]
** Nozomi and Sayaka is [[VideoGame/ToukenRanbu Namazuo and Honebami Toushirou]][[labelnote:explanation]]Some has noted how Nozomi and Sayaka looks like GenderFlip versions of Namazuo and Honebami Toushirou, and has joked about how the series is about them fighting with their butts.[[/labelnote]]
** That's eight exclamation marks.[[labelnote:explanation]]The title is so excited that it's easy to lose track of how many exclamation marks there is. The fans are quick to remind you of how many, especially if you use the incorrect number.[[/labelnote]]
* NarmCharm: While it is ridiculous and way too fanservice-pandering to have a form of girls-only combat that involves intense use of their female attributes, ''Keijo!!!!!!!!'' manages to make it work and revels in the sheer eccentricity of it. In its earnestness and seriousness in playing the combat sport absolutely straight, the show develops a charm of its own that wows fans with the seinen-level combat action on par with ''[=JoJo=]'', and impresses female fans with how fearless, determined, and resourceful the heroines are in their quest to prevail as champions.
* NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity: Much of the negative press against the series may have ended up making it more popular, with a Crunchyroll breakdown showing it as being their highest viewed show across nine different states in the US.
* PeripheryDemographic: Most anime critics watching the show are females themselves. It's a show with diverse body types, positive body confidence with various styles that are praised and not looked down upon by their opponents, a group of girls that don't obsess over men, use guilt and slut shaming, or become jealous of each other's attributes. It also helps that, despite being a fanservice-heavy show, the characters themselves treat Keijo as a legitimate sport that isn't just an ExcusePlot to fight in skimpy clothes.
%%* SignatureScene: There are multiple scenes that stick in many people's minds because of how wacky the show is out of context. Examples include the butt-launched ChuckingChalk scene, the "[[IHaveBoobsYouMustObey titty hypnosis]]'' scene, and even "Gates of Bootylon".
* StrawmanHasAPoint: Kukuru Kashiwaba is looked upon as a scumbag for audio recording the conversation of the Fujisakis' mother because she is only interested in using it to boost her career. While her goals are self-centered, she's not wrong--even if the Fujisaki matriarch sent Ai her husband's ultimate swimsuit to increase the competitive balance between the East and West of Japan, it is still banned in competition, and giving your daughter an unfair advantage in the name of competitive balance is still cheating and nepotism.
* SugarWiki/SuperlativeDubbing: The Dub for the Anime is great. It is very apparent that the cast & crew embraced the show's wacky concept and takes its very tongue-in-cheek approach faithfully, while still making it intense and/or funny right when it needs to be. It's also easy to tell that the ladies voicing the characters are having a blast recording & delivering their lines.
* TearJerker: In some ways, Nozomi's disposition in the final chapter; she and Miyata get disqualified in the finals, and Kazane ends up becoming the Prize Queen. Nobody ever got to see her ever reach her dream...
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Despite Mio Kusakai being the strongest among the Elite Class and her interesting personality, she doesn't get a DayInTheLimelight moment, we don't learn much about her background, and after Chapter 87, which is the end the East-West War Arc, she doesn't make an appearance until Chapter 142 during the Hip Party Arc (excluding the omake). On top of that, we never got an opportunity for her and Nozomi to race against each other.
** Mari Murata, the eighth ranked examinee of the Elite Class, is OutOfFocus through the entire series. Despite getting to know the other Elites, Mari is the only one who doesn't get a lot of attention. Saya Kogatana almost suffered this fate until the Garden Worth Arc. Mari hasn't been seen at all after the East-West War Arc, she wasn't even there when the Elite Class reunite during Hip Party Arc until the final chapter.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The overall animation quality is absolutely stellar, boasting very fluid and dynamic movement, beautiful and vibrant colors, and crisp on-model art.
