It was actually because they used an edited-for-TV print from Lorimar that already had several things {{Bowdlerized}} or completely deleted from the movie, including the scene where Deaney is killed off. Likewise, Joel's riff "I guess it's one of those effects too expensive to show" when Cummings is killed reflects that the shot of Cummings standing agape with a bleeding hole in his forehead was already snipped out of the film before [=MST3K=] ever got their hands on a copy (this VHS release contains the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KfbpOMWIzQ&t=1h26m29s exact same edit here]], demonstrating that the cut was not made by The Brains).

Baker has never directly addressed the controversy but the Brains indicate that his reaction was, if not exactly friendly, less extreme and more understandable.
