* AdaptationDisplacement: The Platform/NintendoEntertainmentSystem version is better-known outside of Japan than the arcade original, despite (or more likely because of) it being a PortingDisaster.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: Let's be honest, if any of us caught wind of this, it's less likely because it's considered an underrated classic, and more likely because [[WalkingSwimsuitScene it stars a chick in a bikini.]]
* FanNickname: She's known by fans as "Goddess" (instead of "Princess") Athena because of her appearances in SNK Playmore {{crossover}}s (''SVC: Chaos'' and ''NGBC'') and to difference her from Athena Asamiya.
* {{Moe}}: The original game's artwork, along with the SuperDeformed sprites, make ''Athena'' a sort of prototype for moe sensibilities before they became omnipresent around the TurnOfTheMillennium. ''Athena: Full Throttle'' maintained this kind of style, updated for mid-2000s tastes.
* MorePopularSpinoff: ''VideoGame/PsychoSoldier'', thanks to Athena Asamiya's continued popularity in ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters'', is generally much more relevant to gamers than the original ''Athena'' that inspired it.
* PortingDisaster: The Platform/NintendoEntertainmentSystem version. Ported by the same guys behind the NES versions of the first two ''VideoGame/IkariWarriors'' games, this took what was seen as a [[SoOkayItsAverage passable]] arcade game and turned it into one of the most reviled NES games around. Unfortunately, [[AdaptationDisplacement this is probably the most well-known version as well]], due to the original arcade release being fairly limited and not receiving any international ports until much later on.
* QuirkyWork: Athena, the goddess of wisdom, stripping down to her [[IconicOutfit red underwear]] to go fight monsters and later having adventures at a WizardingSchool. And then her descendant is [[MagicalGirl a psychic Japanese schoolgirl]].
* SoOkayItsAverage: The original arcade version is seen as a competent but fairly forgettable platformer with nothing really special about it beyond [[WalkingSwimsuitScene the obvious]].
