# All girlfriends are hotties.
# An AI which can understand ordinary speech, and hold a conversation with ordinary people, but communicates with beeps and tones or inserts meaningless noises into otherwise ordinary speech.
# Despite globalization in recent decades, ever increasing ethnic diversity, general cynicism and disillusionment regarding "The American Way", and despite future world wars in the work's mythology, mainstream American culture of the future still revolves around classic images of Eagleland Americana (aka EagleLand type I, America The Beautiful): baseballdespite the fact that even in modern recent decades, baseball has been completely eclipsed by American football as the definitive American sport; baseball, now has an image of being glacial, dull, and appealing only to much older folks., rock and rollno metal, punk, alternative, or progressive rock allowed though as those are typically seen as not mainstream or "clean" enough, and they also tend to be regarded as mostly British or European in origin. So we are left with mostly Elvis, Springsteen, and a very small handful of others., cheeseburgers, white picket fences, Mom's apple pie, cowboys, The American Dream, the NuclearFamily, idealized images of historical U.S. presidents such as Washington, Lincoln, etc.
# TheCaptain or other main heroic protagonist grew up as a either the simple farm boy or farm girl or some other variation of The wholesome "All American". They will usually be from a part of the American midwest, a region that is frequently regarded in American culture as cleancut, grounded, straightforward, humble, blunt but honest, and unpretentious. They retain that image even as an adult. Most of the early American astronauts had a noticeable Midwestern drawl but the trope does predate the space program, in aviation, especially with pilots such as Chuck Yeager.
## Characters from more urban, cosmopolitan upbringing, while not neccesarily depicted as unlikeable, are almost invariably written to be more cynical, snobbish, or dubious, and less charismatic than the Eagleland wholesome protagonist. This is despite the fact that characters from urban environments as a rule are more likely to be street smart, liberal, and tolerant with respect to people from different racial or cultural backgrounds and lifestyles in comparison to characters who spent their formative years in sparsely populated small town or rural American areas which are noted for frequently being very conservative as well as racially and culturally homogenous.
# Marine Biologists, Oceanographers, Wildlife Biologists, and other types of Environmental Scientists are Granola Girls or BourgeoisBohemian.
# In PostApocalyptic eras where remnants of humanity subsist on things like canned goods from before the end, the usually long past expiration date of these canned goods is never taken into account. Neither do they ever seem to aquire food poisoning (usually botulism) as a result.
# The ruling elders or wise ones of a society always dress in robes or toga-like garb, even if it's a futurisic society.
# Black actors in science fiction offerings from The70s and The80s are given costume and makeup designs that would make them fit perfectly in a lineup for the Parliament Funkadelic or Music/EarthWindAndFire.
# Prodigies or other super genius types always turn down a more lucrative or secure career in their field (usually science or engineering) in place of being in the more dangerous military/starfleet/police lines of work. The reason being a variation of "It's just more fun and exciting" or "Just to prove that I can do it" (both reasons that a real admissions interviewer in these fields would probably reject an applicant) And they always seem to meet all of the requirements for admission and matriculation, despite never having developed those skills that one would expect a military candidate to have, such as athleticism, coordination, teamwork, and leadership. And on top of that, they are allowed to be a BunnyEarsLawyer despite having chosen (not been drafted into) professions where conformity is expected.
# Regional cultures and ethnicities retain the same tropes as today and yesterday, no matter how far into the future. British persons still drink tea, have a stiff upper lip, and may still have nostalgic feelings for the British colonialist period. Americans are still blunt, outspoken and direct go-getters, and represent EagleLand type 1. If White, they are still likely to idolize the Cowboy image. Americans from the Southern states still have all the trademark Dixie tropes, but only the good parts. African Americans, may still retain certain SoulBrotha or SassyBlackWoman stereotypes. Irish people are still bellicose, hardcore drinkers. Italian or Hispanic characters are still the LatinLover if male, or fiery and feisty if female.
# Africa is now a unified federation of nations (similar to the European Union) in an attempt to dodge the AfricaIsACountry misstep. However, it is usually still just an excuse to write a black character who is a continental African but not take the time of doing the research as to where in Africa they are from.It is a matter of fact that citizens of member EU countries still refer themselves primarily as a national of that specific country, not merely as EU citizens.
# A character in a futuristic setting has a fetish or fixation on a certain historical period, even if that historical period in reality would be restrictive or unwelcoming to persons of his/her gender, race, color, or ethnicity. Computer or holographic simulations of said historical setting will usually display PoliticallyCorrectHistory, even when the characters would know better.
# One of the astronauts on the mission will always have a FreakOut moment when things go especially bad and appear hopeless, despite the fact that psychological tests would have screened such a candidate out of the space program.
# Characters in PostApocalyptic settings never seem to have any problem with bathing, toilet issues, or practicing good hygeine habits. Makeup, shaving, and maintaining hairstyles also still seem to be no problem.
# Alien languages are simply the standard 26 letter Latin alphabet substituted with alien glyphs.
## Names of people, places, and things in alien cultures or ALongTimeAgoInAGalaxyFarFarAway use acronyms that should only make sense in English (or whatever Earth language in which the story is being written).
## Alien race planets and names always have the same English language format: Aliens being named after their home planet with the suffix "-an" or "-ian". For example, natives of the hypothetical planet Rigel being called "Rigellans" or "Rigellians". An example of the reverse; "Talaxians" will be from the planet "Talaxia" This is even the case when said planets are most likely not the local name but perhaps a human Federation designation or bastardization for the name of the word for the world in question.Example: Rigel is an Earth astronomical designation for a star in the constellation of Orion.
## The language closest to English (or whatever the audience speaks) is typically designated as "Galactic Standard" in-universe.
# Military organizations will have a mashup of army/airforce and naval ranks, especially if the setting is the Battlestar. In the real world, the American air force was originally part of the army air corps but became their own entity in 1947. At the same time, the Navy would commission its own separate air force due to the advent of aircraft carriers. Naturally, they would use naval ranks for their pilots. In science fiction with battlestar fighter squadrons, you often have pilots with a mishmash of army and navy ranks, sometimes in the same squadron. A squadron commander with the naval rank of Lt. Commander (equivalent to Major in other branches) may have wingmen who are a flight sergeantThis adds to the common trope of conflating American and Commonwealth (UK) ranks; flight sergeant does not exist in the US air force, where fighter pilots are exclusively officer rank. and a captain (equivalent to a naval full Lieutenant; if he's a naval captain, then he should be too important to be a fighter pilot). Confusing matters is that a ship's commander is traditionally addressed as captain regardless of actual rank (which occurs in the real Western navies). As with the rank of captain, the rank of commander is often just as vague and may mean anything from the rank directly under naval captain to an equivalent to commodore, fleet captain, admiral, commander in chief (effectively a supreme commander), or even just an administrator of a space station or star base.
