Ma-ri is a withdrawn young girl who has just entered a new school. She has two loving parents and an adorable younger brother. She likes to play the guitar. And she also likes to go around nibbling on the necks of young bo- oops, wasn't supposed to let that last bit out.

So the tale of a reserved vampire girl and her persistent love interest begins. Will the self imposed isolation of Ma-ri prevent her from living her high school life to the fullest? Will she give in to the tantalizing smell of Jae-min, the handsome classmate she met on the subway? Will the school band ever make it big?

!!This work contains examples of:
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Soo-ri considers [[{{Gonk}} Bowon]] this for the majority of the story. However, they actually do end up dating after he visits the hospital every day to keep her dying mother company.
* AccidentalPervert: Ma-ri wakes up from a nap to find herself nibbling on a freaked out Jae-min's neck. Plot ensues.
* AlphaBitch: Ah-ra pretty popular at school and also quite mean, as seen by the way she constantly bullies Ma-ri. However she fails to get Jae-min to care about her and she fails to scare Ma-ri away from him. After [[spoiler:getting threatened by Si-Hoo to keep their vampirism a secret]], she gets better - she even [[spoiler:joins the band and defends her near the end of the story when Ma-ri goes through a terrifying crisis]].
* {{Angrish}}: An angry Ah-ra, on seeing Ma-ri in chapter 47, says "ASDFWHAR-" and more, several lines long. Ma-ri wanders away confused.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Joseph is Ma-ri's young brother and he often gives her with a hard time when she's looking after him.
* ArrangedMarriage: Due to the small population size and the distance between vampire familes, it is common for arranged marriages to be set up between vampires. Ma-ri's family attempts to set one up between her and Si-hoo, much to her chagrin.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: There are several instances where the usually aloof or stubborn Ma-ri and Jae-min show some affection to each other. One being their LapPillow moment and another being Ma-ri wearing the hairclip Jae-min got her.
* BandagedFace: [[spoiler:Si-hoo wraps his face in bandages and wears heavy covering clothing to reach Ma-ri's school in chapter 112, as he would be burning alive if his skin were exposed to the sun at this point.]]
* BeautifulDreamer: Jae-min falls asleep on Ma-ri's lap and the latter marvels at how cute he looks. [[spoiler:She strokes his hair and gets caught.]]
* BelligerentSexualTension: Between Jae-min and Ma-ri. Justified in that Jae-min is a human while Ma-ri is a vampire. It doesn't help that Jae-min's blood is particularly sweet and difficult to resist.
* BeneathTheMask:
** Ma-ri has to pretend to be a human due to the fantastic racism. It gets heart-breaking when she has to make racist jokes about herself and her family to keep her cover from getting blown.
** Jae-min has a lot hidden behind his cool exterior, especially regarding his family issues which are mostly unknown amongst his peers.
* BerserkButton:
** Played for laughs with Ma-ri a couple of time. Everytime Si-hoo asks her to get him some of Jae-min's blood, she ends up pummeling him.
** A far less humorous example with Jae-min; he does not take being touched by a girl (other than Ma-ri) well at all. Once more, [[spoiler:if Ma-ri is assaulted in any way, his immediate response is to lay the offending party out.]]
* BloodSplatteredInnocents: [[spoiler: Ma-ri is covered in blood when a mob of students pelt her with blood packs, in an attempt to drive her away from the school.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Jae-min punches out some of the students threatening Ma-ri, ''gulps down'' one of the packets of blood at her feet, in front of most of the school and drags Ma-ri away from the school]] in Chapter 112.
* BreakTheCutie: After a long, hard time of opening up her heart and getting together with Jae-min, Ma-ri finds out that [[spoiler:he hates vampires, on the night she was going to confess to him no less. She tries her best to keep it a secret, but Jae-min finds out and coldly broke up with her. By the time he tries to make amends, he has already deeply hurt her. Then it gets even worse when Yoo Chae Rin reveals to the school that she is a vampire out of spite (in the middle of a huge vampire scare).]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: Vampires in this setting have been turned into nothing more than ordinary humans with some special dietary needs by centuries of drinking pigs' blood. Inverted by Si-hoo, who gets a human girlfriend who doesn't mind his vampirism for a while and even gives him her blood. [[spoiler:After a while, he becomes a traditional vampire who can be killed by sunlight but has superhuman strength.]]
* ButtMonkey: Ah-ra just can't get her way, whether it be getting Jaemin to reciprocate her or torturing Ma-ri. Also the two members of the band club that aren't main characters don't get treated all that well by fellow members.
* ChekhovsGun: The metal bars seen hanging from a crane operated by an (ostensibly) lazy man are present early on in the series, and they become an important plot device later on when [[spoiler:they threaten Soo-ri's life and forces Ma-ri to reveal her identity to her]].
* ChekhovsGunman: The rude white-haired vampire on television is Si-Hoo, the vampire who turns up later and one who Ma-ri's family want her to marry.
* ChickMagnet: Jae-Min and Si-Hoo have their fair share of fangirls and admirers.
* CouldntFindAPen: [[spoiler:Yoo Chae Rin uses blood taken from Ma'ri's blood packs to write the messages revealing she is a vampire to the entire school. She also covers Ma-ri's desk in the blood and writes 'Die' in giant letters on the window beside it, also in blood.]]
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Jae-min has blue eyes and blue hair.
* DaywalkingVampire: Vampires have lost their deathly weakness to sunlight thanks to decades of consuming only pigs blood and are now able to walk relatively unharmed in bright sunlight. [[spoiler:Si-hoo learns the hard way that a steady diet of human blood causes this weakness to return when he is badly burnt stepping out of a building.]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: Ma-ri starts warming up to people as the story progresses.
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler:Yoo Chae-Rin is dumped by Si-hoo because of his arranged marriage with Ma-ri, something that Ma-ri never agreed to, so she outs Ma-ri as a vampire, goads the students into pelting her with bloodbags, and swears to wipe out all vampires from the world.]]
* DivingSave: [[spoiler:Ma-ri saves Soo-ri from being crushed under falling metal pipes by diving at her, knocking her out of the way and being buried under them instead. She only survives because she is a vampire and her rapidly healing injuries make Soo-ri figure out what she is.]]
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: [[spoiler:After it comes out that a murder thought to be commit by a vampire was actually a vampire-hating human's doing]], a vampire rights movement lead by humans starts up, and their signs are rainbow colored.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:After the school threatens to expel Ma-ri, she attempts to kill herself by diving into a lake of freezing water, as vampire are sensitive to the cold. Good thing Jae-min stops her.]]
* FakeOutFadeOut: Chapter fifteen.
* FantasticRacism: Between the vampires and humans. It isn't pretty. Just being revealed as a vampire to the general public can risk the vampire and their entire family being exiled and many people think the best answer to the nearly non-existent vampire threat is their complete extermination.
** The main part of the plot and drama after Jae-min and Ma-ri start dating is Ma-ri's struggle over whether or not to reveal her secret to Jae-min, for fear he will hate her, due to her lack of knowledge on how he feels about vampires.
** In chapter 85 she is compeletely [[spoiler:horrified]] when Jae-min confirms his [[spoiler: hatred for vampires. On the very same day she was planning to finally tell him.]]
** This is the reason that fictional singer Raina Kyo came out as a vampire in chapter 75, so other vampires could have the courage and there be an attempt to end said racism.
--->"To those who are vampires. Stop hiding and come out into the world. You are not sinners!"
* FirstFriend: Soo-ri becomes this to Ma-ri, being the first human she ever knew that learnt she was a vampire and was still comfortable being friends with her.
* FreudianExcuse: The reasons behind Jae-min's dislike for women and vampires. [[spoiler:His biological mother left his dad for a vampire (albeit a nice one). He wasn't told that she was threatened to stay away from them. His father eventually grew indifferent to him and turned a blind eye while Jae-Min's stepmom beat him and constantly ridiculed him because his mother fell in love with a vampire. His father also berated both him and her for the same reason. To add insult to injury, his dad winds up showing his half-brother with affection while ignoring him. He was even harassed by his friends because his mom fell in love with a vampire. The experience left him rather traumatized.]]
* FriendlessBackground: Ma-ri starts off as the new anti-social student with no friends, though there are hints that it wasn't always like that.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Vampires like Ma-ri and her family decide to blend into society as much as possible and meet their dietary needs via humane ways.
* GuiltFreeExterminationWar: 300 hundred years ago vampires were nearly wiped out completely in a very much literal extermination, until they discovered they were able to survive on pig's blood and the governments of the world allowed them to continue living. The general public opinion of people in the current time is that the war should have continued and wiped out all vampires. [[spoiler:Later events in story make the war starting up again a ''very'' real concern, but it's averted at the climax when it's revealed that a murder that was thought to be done by a vampire was done by a bum who wanted to stir up controversy; this jumpstarts a human-lead vampire rights movement.]]
* HappilyFailedSuicide: [[spoiler:Ma-ri's ultimate fate. ]]
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: Ma-ri often wears her headphones at the start of the story which signifies her lack of her friends. [[spoiler: Appropriately, they are broken around the time she first makes friends who accept her for what she is.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: It takes a long time, but eventually [[spoiler:Ah-ra]] gets one of these by the end. Whilst she hides it well, it's clear she's a lot more concerned for Ma-ri's well-being than she lets on and even gets into a fight with [[spoiler:Yoo Chae Rin after she ruins Ma-ri's life.]]
* HeManWomanHater: Jae-min, at the start, is rather irritated by females.
* HiddenEyes: Jae-min's eyes are hidden in such a manner in chapter 55.
* HopelessSuitor:
** Ah-ra. Her crush Jae-min rarely acknowledges her, even before he meets Ma-ri.
** Yoo Chae Rin is Si-hoo's supposed girlfriend yet was avoided by him as much as he could before he even met Ma-ri. After she's introduced, he treats her nothing more as his source of meals despite her being overly affectionate towards him.
* IAteWhat?: There was a day when Ma-ri [[spoiler:forgot her lunch, a bag of pig's blood, and turned to Si-hoo for help. He gives her an extra blood bag that turns out to be human blood.]] Ma-ri is shocked and disgusted when she finds out, and leaves feeling more than a little sullied.
* IceQueen: Ma-ri is quiet and aloof towards her classmates, thus got the nickname "ice princess" at her school.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: A non-romantic example between Si-Hoo and Jae-min in chapter 47, when Si-Hoo is stalking Jae-min for his extremely tasty blood and says he'll make an exception (sexually) just so he can have Jae-min. Then Jae-min tries to punch him in the face.
-->'''Si-Hoo:''' "[[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday I don't bend that way either]], but if it's someone like you, I don't mind giving it a try."
* IneffectualLoner: Ma-ri is a beautiful, nice and musically talented girl who refuses to make friends at first due to her vampire roots and thus tries to be as distant as possible towards her classmates.
* InstantFanClub: Si-Hoo gains his own share of fangirls the moment he transfers to the school. The friend of Jae-min, who has a rabid fan club of his own, jokes that Si-Hoo will start stealing his fans and Jae-min comments that he hopes that happens.
* InterruptedSuicide: [[spoiler:Jaemin manages to get to Ma-ri in time.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Ma-ri is a vampire yet just wants to be a normal human being and lead a happy normal life.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Yoo Chae Rin wishes she could be a vampire because she feels her life would be more exciting.
* {{Jerkass}}: Doesn't express Si-Hoo's personality. He was dancing on a MoralEventHorizon in Chapter 45 ForTheLulz. [[spoiler:Fortunately he was interrupted.]] He gets ''slightly'' nicer to Ma-ri over time, even [[spoiler:stopping Ah-ra from revealing they're vampires]] (though this might have not been for Ma-ri's sake); he still antagonises everybody around him. And then there's [[spoiler:his method of breaking up with Yoo Chae Rin, which is to tell her after knocking her to the ground that their entire relationship was a lie and he never saw her as anything but a walking blood bank and that he's now sick of the very sight of her.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** Jae-min is pretty much an ass at the start of the story, however he becomes a lot nicer when he falls in love with Ma-ri.
** Si-Hoo is introduced as a pretty blood-thirsty and nasty vampire, but he sometimes shows that he's capable of showing kindness, such as [[spoiler:stopping Ah-ra from revealing Ma-ri's identity which allows her to get together with Jae-min]].
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Yoo Chae Rin only gets a slap in the face even though she tried to ruin Ma-ri's life and even gets back together with Si-hoo (romantically or not is unknown) at the end of the story.]]
* KindnessButton: Ma-ri is this for Jae-min. Usually, he can't so much as tolerate women, and [[spoiler:freaked out when Ah-ra grabbed his hand once, practically going berserk.]] Enter Ma-ri; the only girl he truly makes a concerted effort to be nice to. So much so that when Ma-ri learns of is HeManWomanHater attitude, she doesn't believe it. Eventually, the more and more time he spends with her the more balanced he becomes emotionally.
* LapPillow: Jae-min once sleeps with his head resting on Ma-ri's lap. [[spoiler:Which leads to the first kiss between Jae-min and Ma-ri.]]
* LargeHam: Soo-ri is pretty over-the-top and hot-blooded, especially when it comes to the band club.
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Shi-hoo decides to cut things off with Chae-rin none too gently because he has feelings for Ma-ri and wants to be with her after Jae-min breaks up with her when he finds out she's a vampire. But then all of the human blood he'd gotten from Chae-rin catches up with him, and he is no longer immune to sunlight. He does get super strength, though.]]
* LethalChef: Ma-ri and her entire family are terrible cooks. Justified because vampires don't eat human food and don't need to know how to cook, plus they have no taste for anything beside blood.
* LittleBlackDress: Ma-ri's aunt is always wearing a plain black dress, which gives her an elegant and sophisticated look.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Deconstructed. Once Soo-ri gets over her FantasticRacism for vampires, she tries to be this for Ma-ri, constantly supporting her, encouraging her to enjoy life, and defending her from others. However, Soori has her own problems, such as her mother, whose health is rapidly deteriorating. As the comic progresses, Soori is DemotedToExtra as she spends an increasing amount of time at the hopsital when her mother begins to die; this means she can't be there when Ma-ri needs her most and the few appearances she does make shows that she'd be too emotionally exhausted to offer her usual bright and cheerful optimism.
* LoveTriangle: Ah-ra likes Jae-min who likes Ma-ri, who also starts to feel things for him. Then new guy and vampire Si-hoo shows up and appears to show interest in Ma-ri, and in Chapter 74 Yoo Chae Rin, Si-hoo's girlfriend who he keeps avoiding, also arrives.
* MasochistsMeal: Vampires can eat normal food, but it has no taste for them and soon after it reaches their stomach, their body forces them to throw it up. To keep up appearance, Ma-ri is forced to eat every single day at school, only to puke it up right after.
* MistakenForGay: Due to Jae-min's constant rejection and general dislike for girls, people suspect he likes men instead. Including his friend, who was worried Jae-min had a crush on him.
* MyGreatestFailure: Jae-Min's mother [[spoiler:broke her promise with Jae-Min and (unknowingly) left him to be abused by his step mother.]] Ever since then, she has tried her hardest to atone and mend bridges between her son and herself (as well as her new husband), but with very little success.
* NewTransferStudent: Ma-ri transfers to her high school slightly before the beginning of the story. Si-Hoo and Yoo Chae Rin also eventually move there.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** In the past, Jae-Min's mom [[spoiler:left his father for a vampire she fell in love with years ago. During the divorce, she promised to come get him. But his father threatened to reveal the identity of the vampire she had remarried to so she broke her promise. Unfortunately, she underestimated just how much people would ostracize her son because she left for a vampire. She was also unaware that he was physically/emotionally abused by his stepmother until he ran away.]]
** Si-hoo's jerkass method of [[spoiler:breaking up with Yoo Chae Rin after revealing that he is engaged to Ma-ri, with included him telling her the entire relationship was a lie, he was only using her for her blood and she disgusts him now, causes Yoo Chae Rin to snap and reveal to the entire school Ma-ri is a vampire.]]
* NonHumanLoverReveal: In Chapter 91 [[spoiler:Jae-min finally learns Ma-ri is a vampire when his friend recognises her as the vampire classmate he knew from his childhood. To say he does not take this news well is an understatement.]]
* NotGoodWithRejection: [[spoiler:Yoo Chae Rin does not take Si-hoo breaking it off with her well and has declared her intent to see the entire vampire race wiped out and happily works to ruin Ma-ri's life by revealing to the entire school she is a vampire.]]
* NoIndoorVoice: Soo-ri speaks quite loudly a good chunk of the time.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: [[spoiler:After making a complete fool of herself trying to woo Jaemin or destroy Ma-ri, Ah-ra nearly ruins Ma-ri's life when she finds out that she is a vampire.]]
* OneHeadTaller: Jae-min is about a head taller than Ma-ri.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: The vampires of ''Orange Marmalade'' were once standard vampires. Long lives, drank human blood, very hard to kill, healed quickly, had near super strength and a deadly weakness to sunlight. By the time of the story, due to restrictions placed on them after a war that drove them to near extinction, they survive off of only pigs' blood and have lost almost all their vampiric traits, except for their reduced but still fast healing. They also still have a small weakness to sunlight, but it causes them no physical pain or discomfort, and they have gained a weakness to cold temperatures.
* ParentalAbandonment: Jae-min was abandoned by his mother for two years, so he claims. The full details are that his mother [[spoiler:left his father for a vampire she fell in love with. She promised to come get him, but his father threatened to reveal the identity of the vampire, thus ruining their lives. So she was forced to withdraw. Unfortunately, she didn't know at the time just how much pain her son was going through.]]
* PassiveAggressiveKombat: Ma-ri's modus operandi when she get ticked at Jaemin, mixed in with a healthy dose of IceQueen.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Ma-ri's parents had an arranged marriage as per vampire custom but they're quite content with their family life.
* PragmaticAdaptation: The TV show that came after the comic was anything but. The original story was down to earth, and relied on interpersonal relationship drama. The TV series, by contrast, introduce elements like reincarnation.
* ProductionThrowback: One of the background characters (with a black baseball cap) is a character from ''Cafe Of Dreams'', an earlier webtoon.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Ma-ri gives a hefty speech to Si-Hoo in chapter 44 at their first meeting when berating him for being the exact kind of vampire she detests.
** Si-Hoo gives a brutal speech to Jae-min after he [[spoiler:breaks up with Ma-ri]], telling him just how much he sucks.
* RedOniBlueOni: Soo-ri and Woo-mi, to an extent.
* RelationshipUpgrade: [[spoiler:Ma-ri and Jae-min finally get together]] at the end of Part 3.
* TheRunaway: Jae-min no longer lives with his mum and step-father due to his resentment towards them.
* RunningGag: Joseph's abuse of animals, courtesy of one constantly hungry belly, mainly the stray animal he's picked up. He constantly scares or grosses out Ma-ri by either offering her a live mouse, or eating one in front of her.
* SecretKeeper: Several people know or come to know Ma-ri's identity. They are:
** Mrs Oh, a teacher and Jae-min's mother, who's known from the start about Ma-ri. She respects vampires thus does her best to protect Ma-ri. [[spoiler:She's very understanding because her new husband is a vampire.]]
** [[spoiler:Soo-ri]], who finds out after [[spoiler:being saved by Ma-ri from getting hit by a pole and Ma-ri's wounds recover quickly]]. Despite previously showing rather ugly prejudice towards vampires, Ma-ri's kindness is what convinces them to stay as her friend and protect her identity.
** By the end of Part 3 both [[spoiler:Woo-Mi and Ah-Ra]] know. The former keeps the secret as Ma-ri's friend, but the latter only stays hush due to [[spoiler:death threats from Si-Hoo]].
** Yoo Chae Rin, who's also been keeping Si-hoo's secret ever since she met him. [[spoiler:However she reveals the truth to the entire school when Si-hoo breaks up with her.]]
* SchoolClubStories: Soo-ri convinces/forces Ma-ri into joining the band club. Jae-min eventually joins after being dragged in by his mother.
* ShoutOut:
** Within the story the real-life band Riddim plays during a street festival.
** A group of them see the film "[[Film/TheDarkKnightRises Umbi Knight Rises]]".
** When the band discusses possible songs to perform, they mention HI.U's "Exciting Day" and Old Generation's "Into the New Hole," referencing IU's Good Day and Girls' Generation's "Into the New World."
** In one scene, Jae-min sings a few lines from the chorus of Big Bang's "Monster."
* ShrinkingViolet: Ma-ri, before ThePowerOfFriendship kicks in, is quite shy and aloof due to her circumstances as a vampire.
* SmugSnake: Jae-min, though he gets better with time, just for Si-Hoo to be introduced and be even more conceited, who eventually gets better with certain people.
* StalkerWithACrush: Jae-min is one at the start, no matter how much he denies it, as he lets his growing crush for Ma-ri get to him and follows her to see how she's like.
-->'''Jae-min:''' "I feel good when I'm watching you."
* StepfordSmiler: Jae-min's parents whenever they're with him. They act friendly and smile, but deep down they're still pretty broken up about their strained relationship with him and the guilt over what they (indirectly) did to him. Jae-min's stepdad revealed that his mother has cried several times over her guilt.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:Ma-ri pushes Soo-ri out of the way of falling metal pipes and gets hit herself. Fortunately she has fast healing, revealing her to be a vampire.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: Ah-ra all the way. She tries her best to torment Ma-ri when she starts getting Jae-min's interest and threatens to expose her secret to the world if she doesn't cut off contact with Jae-min. She spends as much time as she can trying to destroy Ma-ri only to fail every time. As she ends up spending more time with the cast, she cools down and by the time [[spoiler:Ma-ri's secret is revealed, has become nice enough that Ma-ri's treatment at the hands of the school completely horrifies her.]]
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: The Line Webtoon summary mentions [[spoiler:Jae-min's hatred of vampires]] but that doesn't come up until chapter 85.
* {{Tsundere}}: Ma-ri and Jae-min are a tsundere couplet, with both (especially Ma-ri) trying to act cold towards one another but deep down like each other and care about their wellbeing.
* VegetarianVampire: Well, not really vegetarian in the strict sense of the word, but the idea is there. Most vampires drink pig blood, including Ma-ri and her family - pork is also one of the few foods they eat.
* WasItAllALie:
** [[spoiler:One of first things Jae-min suspects of their relationship when he discovers Ma-ri is a vampire is that she was only going out with him to get a chance to drink his blood.]]
** Si-hoo tells [[spoiler:Yoo Chae Rin that their whole relationship was a lie and he was using her for her blood. She does not take this well.]]
* WhamEpisode: Chapter 85. It's revealed that [[spoiler:Jae-Min's mother divorced his biological father to marry a vampire. And as a result, he is deeply prejudiced against them.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: A lot of people in the story call Jae-Min out when [[spoiler:he breaks up with Ma-ri due to his hatred for vampires and treats her rather horribly.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Han Si-hoo, the white-haired {{jerkass}}.
* WhyCantIHateYou: Jae-min explains to Ma-ri in chapter six that no matter how hard he tries he just can't hate her.
* WickedStepMother: Jae-min's stepmother abused him often after his real mother left.
* YaoiFangirl:
** A group of girls on the train who like Jae-min get upset when he says Ma-ri is his girlfriend (for kicks), saying they thought he liked guys and that "it's much more attractive".
** The two girls in chapter 47 who, upon seeing Si-Hoo and Jae-min positioned in an [[NotWhatItLooksLike interesting position]], squeal "hyaaa~", ask if it's a lovers quarrel and take everything they say sexually (such as when Si-Hoo talks about pouncing on Jae-min).
* YearX: It begins in "Autumn, 20XX".
