->''There are a lot of crazy people you think wouldn't live in Hawaii, but probably do.''
-->-'''Peter Paltridge''', ''Platypus Comix Official Collection 4: The Secrets of George Lucas's Fortress of Solitude''

Peter Paltridge, the host of Website/PlatypusComix, created ''[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?seriesID=5 Keiki]]'' in 2002. The comic features various grade-school age children living in Honolulu, Hawaii, such as {{Badbutt}} Beefer Kekoalauliilnapalihauliuliokekoolau, TokenEvilTeammate Ivan, TooCleverByHalf Keiki Kikilaka ([[MeaningfulName named after the Hawaiian word for "child"]]), and CloudCuckoolander Andrea. The series avoids portraying Hawaii as an island paradise, through its eccentric cast and outrageous occurrences. Paltridge initially wanted this comic to represent the "real" Hawaii, but it seems to have drifted farther and farther away from that premise.

In February 2013, Peter Paltridge [[http://www.toonzone.net/forums/platypus-comix/301429-keiki-love-stinks-yeah-yeah-talkback.html#post4084596 announced]] Peter announced plans to cancel ''Keiki'', and hasn't added any new stories to the series since December 2013.
----
!!This comic provides examples of:

* AbortedArc: "[[ChristmasEpisode Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic]]" began in December 2002, then received a new chapter each December for the next several years. However, it hasn't received a new chapter since 2007. WordOfGod says there was never a plan for a story ([[ArtifactTitle only the first two parts really had anything to do with Christmas]]) and the previous parts didn't get many hits.
* AdultsAreUseless: The main reason Beefer and Ivan turned out so ill-behaved. Specifically, Beefer's mother seems [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=13&page=2 rather]] [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=13&page=3 gullible]], and Ivan's mother seems [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=8&page=3 rather neglective]].
* AlliterativeName: Keiki Kikilaka, Marie Magnolia (Ivan's mother and owner of a local restaurant), Tawny Twangstern (a Southern girl who has become the object of Beefer's crush)
* AllJustADream: Any comic in which [[spoiler: wheelchair-bound Amara becomes popular]]. The dreamer even [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=25 sees this trope coming]] a page in advance during one of the instances.
* ArtisticLicenseHistory: In "Take Your Keiki To Work Day," Keiki and her older sister, Queenie Waheenie, watch [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=8&page=14 a documentary]] about Hawaii which teaches that the islands were formed from one of Pele's eggs, portrays King Kamehameha has a dragon, and boasts that Queen Liliuokalani willingly gave Hawaii to America after [[AmericaSavesTheDay Americans saved the day]] and banished Tiki gods to the PhantomZone.
-->'''End of Documentary:'''...and we live HappilyEverAfter!
-->'''Keiki:''' Wow, what a load of...
-->'''Queenie:''' Well, some of it's true...I read it on Website/{{Wikipedia}}!
* ArtShift:
** The drawings of Beefer's [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=3&page=3&seriesID=5 futuristic vision]] in "Academia Nuts" all appear to be taken from an old, realistic, full-color comic book.
** The [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=11&page=15 chase scene]] in "Deathburger in Paradise" is drawn as crude doodles due to budget constrictions.
* BatmanGambit: During the Student Body President election in "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=4&pageType=index&seriesID=5 Total Recall]]," one candidate assumes the alias of "Candidate X," and gains support through advertisements that leave an intriguingly mysterious impression on the other students. Eventually, Candidate X wins the election in a landslide, allowing [[spoiler: Keiki]] to [[spoiler: re]]assume authority over the student body.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: In "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=19&seriesID=5 Haole Berry]]", Beefer exclaims that his life would probably go better if he became rich. [[spoiler:[[Webcomic/{{Mulberry}} Mulberry Sharona]]]] helps him learn otherwise.
* BearsAreBadNews: {{Subverted|Trope}} in "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=4&page=21&seriesID=5 Total Recall]]."
* BigRedButton: "Take Your Keiki To Work Day" [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=8&page=5 shows one]] in one of the subplots. [[Series/{{Lost}} Apparently, if someone forgets to push it every 108 minutes, Hawaii will explode.]]
* BlandNameProduct: [[Website/ChannelAwesome That Guy With the Prematurely Receding Hairline]], the website hosting Beefer's review series "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=15&pageType=index&seriesID=5 The Angry Beefer]]," and several other shows hosted by NoCelebritiesWereHarmed versions of TGWTG personalities.
* BreakoutCharacter:
** If not for the fact the title of the series hasn't changed, one might think Beefer displaced Keiki as the main character, since he's had several [[ADayInTheLimelight days in the limelight]]. Also, he was the only ''Keiki'' character to show up in the Platypus Comix [[http://torquesmacky.deviantart.com/#/d3a1ku5 Tenth Anniversary Ensemble]]. (Most of the other series were represented by at least two characters)
** The E-Venge spokesoman from "E-Venge of the Nerd," Vess [=MacMeal=], went on to appear in some of Peter's other works (albeit with a different character design). These include the one-off comic "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/miscellaneous/index.php?issue=16&seriesID=7 Vess MacMeal Starring in: The More You Know!]]", a Q&A column, ''Ask Vess Anything'', in ''BANG! Magazine'', and some fake small-business advertisements in ''BANG!''
* CanonSue: Invoked; since Keiki is the most refined character in the comic, Queenie [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=8&page=4 once]] called her a MarySue.
** This trait [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools proved useful]] in "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=9&page=20 E-Venge of the Nerd]]:"
-->'''Norbit:''' I HAVE A BAD VIDEO OF YOU TOO!
-->'''Keiki:''' That's a lie. You don't have anything.
-->'''Norbit:''' I do too! I have a video of you, um, doing, um...
-->'''Keiki:''' You don't have anything because I haven't done anything! Now quit bluffing!
* CassandraTruth: The nerdy things that Darcy did in "Beefer Madness" (such as [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&page=12 rambling]] about Creator/DCComics) caused Beefer to [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&page=17 initially disbelieve]] that [[spoiler: [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&page=18 she's a vampire]]]].
** Meanwhile, local TV reporter Natali Marmalade fails to assure panicking Hawaiians that [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&page=7 she does not have the bird flu]].
* ChekhovsGag:
** Ivan [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=4&page=16&seriesID=5 interrupts]] "Total Recall" to recall the time he punched Cameron Diaz on the nose after she accidentally hit him with her surfboard. Later, she joins Beefer and Tawny in [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=4&page=18&seriesID=5 beating Ivan up]].
** During [[spoiler: a flood]] in "Beefer in the Time of Cholera", a background character [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=16 exclaims for help]] from Creator/SethMacFarlane. He comes [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=21 eventually]], but [[spoiler: [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=22 doesn't provide as much help]] as originally hoped]].
** The [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=19&pageType=index&seriesID=5 cover page]] of "Haloe Berry" shows a scene from ''Series/{{Conan}}'' in which Creator/OprahWinfrey happily unleashes a swarm of bees upon her audience. Later, Beefer announces that he will use his newfound wealth to give his friends new cars, like Oprah did. Andrea asks if she can [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=19&page=10 exchange her car for a swarm of bees]].
* ContinuityNod: After (almost) no one gets what they asked for on Christmas in the first part of "Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic", Beefer [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=4&page=14 exclaims]], "If only Johnny [=McRotten=] were back in power!" One of Peter's abandoned series, ''Guava Guava'', had a [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=2&pageType=index&seriesID=8 comic]] in which SantaClaus' new rival, Johnny [=McRotten=], rewarded people who misbehave.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: Beefer tries to play hooky in "Beefer Madness," but finds all the television channels [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&page=4 playing tributes]] to Creator/JerryLewis.
* CoolChair: In "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=5&pageType=index&seriesID=5 Freewheeling]]," hovering chairs become the hottest new children's trend.
* {{Crossover}}: Happens briefly but semi-frequently in the old comics. [[WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch Stitch]]'s [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=3&page=23&seriesID=5 cameo]] in "Academia Nuts" is a notable example since Peter has acknowledged his movie's trailer as an inspiration for ''Keiki'''s tone.
* CursedWithAwesome: "Twilight Princess" saw Darcy return to Hawaii during a surge of popular [[spoiler: vampire]]-related romance books and movies, and [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=14&page=5 gain instant popularity]] after revealing that she's [[spoiler: a vampire]]. Eventually, she starts finding this condition less awesome after questioning [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=14&page=17 the possibility]] her new friends like her for ''what'' she is instead of ''who'' she is. After witnessing celebrities [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=14&page=19 confess]] themselves to be [[spoiler: vampires]] simply to gain publicity, she finally [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=14&page=21 rants]] about the negative repercussions.
* CuteMonsterGirl: [[spoiler:Darcy]], such that Beefer even [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=14&page=8 asks her out]] in "Twilight Princess"
* DateMyAvatar: The ValentinesDayEpisode "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=17&pageType=index&seriesID=5 Love Stinks (Yeah Yeah)]]" has Ivan court a "Cassandra Catfish" over the Internet. [[spoiler: He eventually discovers that Cassandra [[ReallyGetsAround has claimed several other men as her boyfriends]]. The news then expose her as not a high school cheerleader who resembles Emmy Rossum, but Music/TaylorSwift with a fake name and profile picture.]]
* EnforcedPlug: Beefer gives [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&page=2 one]] in "Beefer Madness."
* EveryoneJoinTheParty: As Keiki [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=4&page=28&seriesID=5 chases a vote thief]] in "Total Recall."
* ExpyCoexistence: Wolf the Bounty Hunter is an obvious knockoff of Series/DogTheBountyHunter. [[http://platypuscomix.com/keiki/index.php?issue=9&page=16&seriesID=5 At one point]], he ends up confronting Dog ([[ItMakesSenseInContext both are attempting to claim a bounty on Beefer's head]]) and a [[LEtsYouAndHimFight brawl ensues between the two]] (while Beefer escapes unnoticed).
* FakeOutOpening: "Freewheeling" has [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=5&page=1&seriesID=5 one]].
* FirstNameBasis: The kids address Ivan's mother by her first name, Marie.
* FromBadToWorse: "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=1 Beefer in the Time of Cholera]]" starts with Oahu becoming a CrapsackWorld during the 2009 recession and eventually [[spoiler: shows global warming flooding the island, sparing only Keiki, Queenie, Beefer, Andrea, Ivan, and Tawny.]] Fortunately, [[spoiler: Amara finds all of them (apparently, [[WalkOnWater her wheelchair can float]]) and takes them all to Oahu's last piece of dry land.]] Unfortunately, [[spoiler: a volcano erupts not long after the group reaches the land]], but [[spoiler: Amara manages to [[StatusQuoIsGod restore status quo]] by realizing the comic was AllJustADream]].
* GroundhogDayLoop: After Andrea receives an infinite number of December wishes in "Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic", she decides to make her first wish involves [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=5&page=5 turning back time to December 1st]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Beefer and Ivan
* HypocriticalHumor: "The Angry Beefer" includes some examples during Beefer's [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=15&page=1 review]] of ''WesternAnimation/BarbieInAMermaidTale''.
-->'''Beefer:''' Who says "slam you?" Seriously, how [[ContinuityNod froggy]] can dis ting get?
* InstantAwesomeJustAddMecha: After "Edison Day" replaces St. Patrick's Day in "The Wrath of the Irish," two robots, named "Magi-Bot" and "Happyrobo," [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=6&page=14 duel over the role of Edison Day's mythical gift-giver]].
* InformedAttractiveness: Peter wrote the following about Marie in [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/newbiestuff/keiki.html the bios]]:
-->Marie is one of those beautiful Hawaiian girls you hear about but rarely actually see there. (Beauty is hard to pull off using this drawing style, so just take my word for it).
* IntoxicationEnsues: After Keiki drinks Beefer's Super Brain Drink in "Academia Nuts," she engages in several destructive activities, [[MissingTime none of which she has any memory of]].
* InvisibleParents: Keiki's and Queenie's parents have yet to appear in a comic. [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=6 Beefer's mom]] [[TheFaceless only appears from the neck down]], and [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=10&page=7 his father]] only appears offscreen. Andrea's father has only made [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=6&page=10 one appearance]], which probably isn't canonical. The only parent who ''has'' made a sufficient number of appearances is Ivan's mother (she's also the only adult with [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/newbiestuff/keiki.html a full bio]]).
* IronicNickname: The Stereotyped Smart Kid only had a C average. He [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=3&page=10&seriesID=5 gave up his title]] after Keiki than him or anyone else in Hawaii.
* KarmicJackpot: "Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic" sets into motion when [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=4&page=14 Santa Claus gives Andrea an infinite number of wishes]] for the rest of December as reward for becoming the only person on Oahu to do good that year.
* KilledOffForReal: Miss Munupi in part six of "Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic". The permanence is [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=11&page=2 confirmed]] in "Deathburger in Paradise".
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Read "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=14&pageType=index&seriesID=5 Twilight Princess]]" before "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=7&pageType=index&seriesID=5 Beefer Madness]]", and you'll know right away that Darcy [[spoiler: is actually a vampire]].
** Reading the archive's synopsis of "Twilight Princess" also spoils this.
* LetThereBeSnow: Andrea's Christmas wish in "Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic Part 1". Unlike the others' wishes, [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=4&page=13 hers actually comes true.]]
* MediaScaremongering: Several of Natali Marmalade's news reports, in both ''Keiki'' and ''Scary News with Natali Marmalade'', exaggerate the risk factors of everything from [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=13&page=5 casual video games]] to [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/fpo/scarynews/scary10.jpg babies]] to [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=13&page=7 playing outside]]. The issue "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=13&page=1 Lady Marmalade]]" detailed Beefer's attempts to end these reports.
* NightmareFuel: Explored in-universe in "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=16&pageType=index&seriesID=5 Queenie's Kindertrauma]]." The comic reveals one source of Nightmare Fuel for Queenie: [[spoiler: The gruesome animated movie ''[[WesternAnimation/WatershipDown The Miserable Bunnies]]'', which many parents of the '80s apparently [[AnimationAgeGhetto rented for their children.]]]]
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: WordOfGod says reporter Natali Marmalade was inspired by Portland television reporter Natali Marmion.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Creator/MichelleRodriguez, who became [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=11&page=19 the new fifth-grade teacher]] after Miss Munupi's death, is drawn more realistically than the main characters. This also happens to some guest stars. Her design became simplified in 2013, after ''Keiki'' became a lower priority for Peter than the rest of Platypus Comix and ''BANG! Magazine''.
* OutOfFocus: This struck Keiki so hard, she didn't make any appearances in the year 2011. Her bio even says her status as the main character is, "debatable."
* PopCulturePunEpisodeTitle: Too many examples to list here.
* ProductionForeshadowing: "Haole Berry" has [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=19&page=6 a scene]] where Beefer throws rocks at Winnie Goodwin, Jessie Harper, and Gene Harper, three of the stars of ''Webcomic/FreeSpirit2014''. He admits to Keiki that he doesn't know who any of them are, but has an inexplicable hatred for them.[[note]]The reason probably relates to Peter's announcement that ''Free Spirit'' will displace ''Keiki'' as a flagship comic.[[/note]]
* RecursiveCanon: The [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=17&page=11 Facebook page]] of Ivan's "girlfriend" in "Love Stinks (Yeah Yeah)" says that her Likes include ''Series/OnceUponATime'', ''[[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment Once upon a time]]'', and Platypus Comix.
* ShoutOut:
** "ChristmasCarol II: This Time, It's Seriously Personal!" includes some quotes from ''WesternAnimation/ACharlieBrownChristmas'' on [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=10&page=1&seriesID=8 the first page]]. Beefer's [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=10&page=5&seriesID=8 play]] also consists entirely of Shout Outs.
** As do Beefer's book report in "E-Venge of the Nerd" and his rap in "[[Music/DJJazzyJeffAndTheFreshPrince Girls Just Don't Understand]]."
** "Queenie's Kindertrauma" includes some ''Series/BurnNotice'' [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=16&page=5 references]].
** [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=9&page=12 Vess MacMeal]] from "E-Venge of the Nerd" has a name sounding similar to that of Creator/TressMacNeille, who Peter imagined Vess sounding like.
* SkintoneSclerae
* SpinOff: ''Scary News with Natali Marmalade'', included in Website/PlatypusComix's sister site [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/fpo/index.html For Portlanders Only]].
* SpiritualSuccessor: A Hawaiian vacation Peter once took inspired him to try and make a comic about crazy occurrences in an island community. One of his first attempts was ''Cocktails and Dreams'', which only lasted three issues. Peter's discontent with this comic led him to try and make one set in Hawaii itself.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Peter has admitted that Keiki Kikilaka's status as the main character is "debatable," since the comics focus more often on several of her classmates.
* StylisticSuck: WordOfGod said "The Angry Beefer" [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=15&page=5 contains]] [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=15&page=6 so]] [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=15&page=7 many]] [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=15&page=8 examples]], Peter managed to complete the first nine pages in only two days.
* SurroundedByIdiots: In "Academia Nuts," after Keiki scores higher on a standardized test than anyone else in Hawaii, she begins contemplating the possibility that everyone else is dumber than her. Marie and Andrea [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=3&page=12&seriesID=5 fail]] to alleviate her concerns.
* ThinkOfTheChildren: "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=18&pageType=index Grandiose Thievery of Automobiles]]" examines the need to shield youth from graphic content.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Beefer
* ThrowTheDogABone: [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=17&page=16 The end]] of "Love Stinks (Yeah Yeah)". [[spoiler:After Beefer fails to receive any Valentines from Tawny, Darcy cheers him up with a heart-shaped box of octopus, signed, "From a secret admirer."]]
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: Andrea and her two older brothers.
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=11&page=16 Queenie dies]] in the hastily-drawn-and-written climax to "Deathburger in Paradise," but [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=12&page=5 reappears]] in the next comic, which is drawn entirely in Peter's typical style.
* VerbalTic: Beefer's tendency to end sentencies with "brah".
* WaxingLyrical: Beefer [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=17&page=3&seriesID=5 quotes]] Music/TheMonkees' "I'm a Believer" in "Love Stinks (Yeah Yeah)".
* WrittenInAbsence: After Keiki and Beefer acknowledge Andrea's absence in "Wrath of the Irish," the story [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/keiki/index.php?issue=6&page=10 cuts]] to her and her brothers visiting [[spoiler: [[Film/{{Hook}} Neverland]]]].
* YetAnotherChristmasCarol: Beefer becomes director of the school play in "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=10&page=1&seriesID=8 Christmas Carol II: This Time, It's Seriously Personal!]]" and goes out of his way to make sure the school ''[[SubvertedTrope doesn't]]'' produce another retelling of the old tale.
* YouMeanXMas: Ms. Munupi made her students celebrate "[[http://www.platypuscomix.net/kristmas/index.php?issue=4&page=6 Sparkle Day]]" in the first part of "Keiki's Huge Christmas Epic". One of them accidentally provoked her to refer to Christmas by its actual name, prompting some police to arrest her.
