[[WMG: ''VideoGame/StoryOfTheBlanks'' takes place in the same universe as [[http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/579165 Super Filly Adventure]].]]
The [[spoiler: Bloody Hooves in the "Blank Flank" ending]] in Super Filly Adventure look similar to [[spoiler: Sunny Town's Nightmares]]. In both games, these creatures live in the Everfree Forest. They could be related groups, or even one and the same. Perhaps the "Blank Flank" ending of Super Filly Adventure is actually [[AndThenJohnWasAZombie what happened]] ''[[AndThenJohnWasAZombie after]]'' VideoGame/StoryOfTheBlanks?

[[WMG: Sunny Town was hit by a widespread case of [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E6TheCutiePox Cutie Pox]].]]
This would easily explain [[spoiler:the villagers' horrific reaction to Ruby getting her cutie mark. To them, it was a symptom of a disease that had caused all sorts of trouble in the village before. As such, they killed her to prevent that plague from spreading through the village again. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Nice job breaking it, ponies]].]]
* My belief is that the town was founded by Cutie Pox survivors (possibly young children who got the protection of a third party), and the truth of the matter became distorted through generations of retellings combined with the first hand accounts being done by panicked young children.
** I like to think that Zecora used to be a villager in Sunnyville until said Cutie Pox outbreak happened, but she managed to escape before it affected her.

[[WMG: Sunny Town is the village shown during the storybook opening of the pilot episode]]
Yeah, yeah. Canon versus fan-work. But still, it would be amusing.
* Explantion: Canon says Ponyville didn't exist until fairly recently. So Sunny Town would probably have been the closest small town to where the Princesses lived in antiquity.

[[WMG: Sunny Town was already cursed before earning its current curse from Celestia]]
Due to its close proximity to the ancient Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters, Sunny Town was collateral damage during the battle between Celestia and Luna 1000 years ago, the same fight whose intensity corrupted all the magic in the area and gave rise to the Everfree Forest. One result of that corruption was that Sunny Town's resident blank-flank ponies became physically unable to ever earn cutie marks. After a few generations of isolation (due to being surrounded by dangerous creatures), Sunny Town simply forgot what cutie marks were.

Fast forward to the point where Sunny Town is hit by a Cutie Pox epidemic during a town festival – the same outbreak Twilight read about in "The Cutie Pox". In their paranoia and panic, the uninfected residents murdered every single infected pony, and then went back to their party. When Celestia found out, she used her magic to wipe Sunny Town off the face of Equestria, banishing it to some nether-realm where she forced the survivors to relive their final party over and over again for eternity.
* Unfortunately, due to the twisted forces in the Everfree, her banishment spell breaks down once a year, during the Perigee.[[note]] The Moon's closest approach to the Earth.[[/note]] This normally isn't a big deal since the village was already isolated. However, one Perigee night several decades ago, Ruby – a filly lost in the Everfree – wandered into Sunny Town. While there, she happened to earn her cutie mark, at which point Sunny Town's residents murdered her. And then – once again – returned to their party.
* Mitta ordered the original massacre, so she got slapped with her own personal curse, which was to go through the GroundhogDayLoop along with everypony else, but ''be fully aware of it''.
** So why didn't she save Ruby when she had the chance?
*** Cutie marks were still completely foreign to her. When she saw Ruby's cutie mark, she let her prejudice and cynicism get in the way, and allowed Grey-Hoof and the others to act – plus, watching the same scenes over and over again for nearly 850 years had turned her into a nihilist. It was only when Ruby came back as a ghost that Mitta realized Ruby never had Cutie Pox, a revelation that sent her into despair.

[[WMG: Sunny Town's curse can be broken]]
The only way to break the curse is for Mitta to save a pony like Ruby, one who earns a cutie mark while in town. The night in ''Story of the Blanks'' didn't work because Apple Bloom is still a blank-flank, so it didn't count.
* But who would give Mitta the idea to do such? Who would be ''able'' to?

[[WMG: Sunny Town murdered anypony with a cutie mark long before the above-mentioned Cutie Pox incident.]]
They were simply superstitious, and treated a cutie mark in the same way an angry mob would treat a witch's mark. They didn't learn from their mistake, and they became cursed. Their zombified forms blamed this on the cutie mark rather than their own actions.

[[WMG: Sunny Town used to be part of Ponyville]]
Until a great disaster happened and the village turned bad, so Celestia banished the whole town into the Everfree forest so the citizens of Ponyville didn't get caught in the whole mess. The curse is simply the result of something in the forest affecting the town.

[[WMG: As a ghost, Ruby is somehow "Stuck" and can't properly learn from her actions]]
Ruby honestly didn't seem to expect the Nightmares to turn on Apple Bloom – she talks about how she's sorry for getting Apple Bloom into this in a way that suggests this was nowhere near her plan – but the combined Nightmares and Bone Fiends outnumbering the townsfolk and Mitta talking about how it's been happening again and again seem to imply this has happened before. One possible explanation is that Ruby has done this before, but something about her ghostly state keeps her from learning from it – she can't fully grasp that her trying to make friends leads to said friend's horrible deaths and undeaths.

[[WMG: This is the first time Ruby has actually lured someone to the town]]
As another possible explanation for the above issue, it's possible that Ruby hasn't actually lured anyone to the town before – previous victims stumbled upon it on their own and attracted the attention of the Nightmares. As for why she'd lure someone '''this''' time...

[[WMG: The previous victims had their Cutie Marks]]
This can work as either a corollary to the above, or as a stand-alone WMG. The previous victims who end up as the Bone Fiends had their cutie marks, and were thus likely immediately set upon by the Nightmares. Either Ruby hoped things would turn out differently if she brought a blank in, or seeing a blank piqued her interest and she decided to lure her to the village, hoping that someone without a cutie mark would be safe unlike those who previously stumbled upon the village.

[[WMG: This actually is the first time this has happened]]
Mitta's complaint about this happening is simply about their being forced to relive the day of the party and Ruby's murder over and over again. The Bone Fiends are presumably victims predating Ruby and whatever curse her murder called down, or perhaps ponies who fell victim to other dangers in the forest – there's nothing that says the Nightmares can only raise ponies ''they'' kill.

[[WMG: Featherweight will go to Sunny Town.]]
The Canterlot Royal Guard has blocked off all access, except for air. His wings are too weak, so he hires a flying machine pilot. The pilot leaves, and Featherweight has three days to get the scoop of a lifetime. He's covered food fights, y'know?
* In other words, a WholePlotReference to ''VideoGame/DeadRising''? [[SincerityMode Sounds great]]!

[[WMG: Sunny Town wasn't originally surrounded by the Everfree Forest]]
Once it was in a normal clearing, and the woods were on its edge or nonexistent. Think about it, who builds a town in the middle of the woods with no roads to the outside world? The accursed town was avoided, and the site fell into disarray over the years, and was rapidly overtaken by the Everfree Forest.
* Going further, the Everfree Forest exists for the sole purpose of concealing the town's curse and quarantining them from taking new victims.

[[WMG: Those trees weren't cut down by accident]]
The path obstruction that causes the plot was completely deliberate. Perhaps they were cut down by Ruby, or other something else supernatural from Sunny Town. One pony says they "rarely (...) leave the village" which could mean the Nightmares and Bonefiends are perpetually among the dangers lurking in the Everfree Forest. Breathe a sigh of relief the next time somepony runs into a cockatrice or 'just' timberwolves.

[[WMG: The Changelings based their form off of the Nightmares, but added a few features.]]
The appearance would definitely freeze potential prey with fear.
* Considering that the Changelings have many similarities to vampires or demons, which are similar in appearance to wights or zombies (which the Nightmares basically are)...A cousin species, perhaps?

[[WMG: Sunny Town = [[https://www.deviantart.com/babyrainbou/art/MLP-Other-Tale-of-the-Blanks-241008233 Earth-only Town]]]]
It's probable that all of Sunny Town's residents never met or never knew about Unicorns or Pegasi. And if this were to be proven otherwise, then Ruby would most likely not be the first pony to be murdered for ''being different from the rest''.

* But why would the residents murder Unicorns and Pegsi? What could make them afraid or even hate the the other two types of ponies?
