You can TakeAThirdOption and go up the other staircase, but Joy will be waiting for you downstairs instead of just walking up.

You have to investigate the situation with Iris, meanwhile Joy is working on the door trying to open it. If you go out through the wall and open the door from the outside, Joy will keep sitting there trying to open it.

This is not the case — hiding spots are all over town while demons are mercifully rare. Since the two are not always connected lore-wise either, it makes the world feel less like a game that only caters to the player. However the ravens occasionally seen ''are'' a sign that there are demons ahead and you'll have to use them.
