* DivorcedInstallment: The first ''VideoGame/{{Wonder Boy|1}}'' game was later repurposed as the first game in the ''VideoGame/AdventureIsland'' series, since [[Creator/WestoneBitEntertainment Westone]] also had a licensing deal with Creator/HudsonSoft (in addition to the one they had with Creator/{{Sega}}, which kept the ''Wonder Boy'' trademark).
* GodDoesNotOwnThisWorld: Sega owned the names of the games during the series' stay on their systems. Westone owned everything else, allowing them to port or license the games for other systems. Now that Westone is no more, it's Ryuichi Nishizawa, the creator of the series, who seems to have retained the rights, which he used to promote a spiritual successor to a legitimate sequel, ''VideoGame/MonsterBoyAndTheCursedKingdom''.
* SequelFirst: ''Monster World II'' was eventually ported to the UsefulNotes/GameGear a few months after its sequel ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyInMonsterWorld Monster World III]]'' was released for the [[UsefulNotes/SegaGenesis Mega Drive]] in Japan.
* ShortRunInPeru: The original [[UsefulNotes/SegaMasterSystem Master System]] version of ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap Monster World II]]'' was never released in UsefulNotes/{{Japan}}, so the conversion for the [[UsefulNotes/TurboGrafx16 PC Engine]] (''Dragon's Curse'', or in Japan, ''Adventure Island'') ended up being the first version available there.
* UnCanceled: ''[[VideoGame/MonsterBoyAndTheCursedKingdom Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom]]'' was relased in 2018, over twenty years after the original release of ''VideoGame/MonsterWorldIV''. While it has a different name and a new developer, the creator of the original series is involved, and has acknowledged the project as a legitimate sequel. Shortly after its announcement, two more projects popped up, this time with the original "Wonder Boy" title: a modern remake of ''VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap'' and a follow-up of the original installment called ''Wonder Boy Returns''.
