* FandomLifeCycle: Along with its related series VideoGame/WarioWare and the other Wario games, the Wario Land series is probably one of the few Nintendo franchises to sell more than a million copies and yet, not go beyond phase 1 or 2 on the list, with the fandom being a disjointed cult following at best.
* FranchiseKiller: Despite critical praise, the low sales of VideoGame/WarioLandShakeIt has seemingly prevented the series from getting another game since then, with VideoGame/WarioWare quickly taking over as the prominent Wario franchise whenever Wario gets any series representation most of the time, such as VideoGame/SuperSmashBros and VideoGame/SuperMarioMaker.
* MarthDebutedInSmashBros: Dr. Arewo Shitain from the Japan-exclusive Platform/GameBoy game VideoGame/ForTheFrogTheBellTolls makes several appearances in Wario Land 3 (referred to as "Mad Scienstein") and 4.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: The archaic CPU and blurry, low-resolution monochromatic screen of the Platform/GameBoy were ill-suited to the fast-paced precision platforming that made the Franchise/SuperMarioBros series famous. After two valiant attempts to rework the Mario formula for the Game Boy, Nintendo R&D1 gave the Wario Land a slower pace and gameplay based more on exploration than precision platforming to work within the Game Boy's limitations.
* WordOfDante: While it's never been mentioned in the games, Famitsu magazine referred to Captain Syrup as "Maple" in a Shake preview, implying that her full name is Maple Syrup.
