* ActorInspiredElement: Selena Gomez was keen to do the film to branch out into more mature roles, but signed on under the condition that she wouldn't have to perform nude.
* BillingDisplacement: On the theatrical poster, Music/SelenaGomez is the first billed actor, [[spoiler: despite her character leaving the film halfway through]]. Justified, though, due to Gomez's character [[DecoyProtagonist being the main focus of the film]] until Creator/JamesFranco arrives.
* CreatorBacklash: Vanessa Hudgens found the sex scene so nerve-wracking that she told her agent she never wanted to film another one again.
* CreatorCouple: Rachel Korine is the director's wife.
* DawsonCasting: Of the four lead actresses, only 20-year-old Selena Gomez was strictly the right age to play a college undergrad. Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson were borderline cases at 24 and 23, respectively, while Rachel Korine was 27.
* EnforcedMethodActing: Creator/HarmonyKorine and James Franco played mind games with Selena Gomez during the filming of the pool hall scene to get a genuine reaction out of her.
* PlayingAgainstType: Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, both famous for their Disney roles in the 2000s, appear in more adult roles here. Indeed, they swap their usual Disney type around; Vanessa was TheIngenue in ''Film/HighSchoolMusical'', and plays a HardDrinkingPartyGirl here, while Selena was a rebellious "cool loser" in ''Series/WizardsOfWaverlyPlace'', and plays the TokenWholesome of the group here.
* ThrowItIn: The gun barrel scene was improvised. Harmony Korine suggested the girls stick the guns into Alien's mouth to emasculate him, and it was James Franco's idea for Alien to get turned on and perform oral sex on the guns.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/EmmaRoberts was originally cast as Brit, but she dropped out because she was uncomfortable with the explicit sexuality required by the role/film, specifically the scene that required a threesome between the characters.
** The frat party was intended to be done [[TheOner in one long take]], following Cotty's perspective. However, it was cut down for running too long in the edit.
** A BTeamSequel was announced, helmed by Irvine Welsh Jonas Åkerlund. Both Harmony Korine and James Franco denounced it, and it never ended up materialising. A series was also considered, again without the involvement of Harmony Korine, but likewise was shelved indefinitely.
