For example, Sid was originally written as Ernie's friend, but was changed into his uncle when Grace's editor pointed out that nobody would want to be friends with a guy like that. Likewise, in early drafts, Ernie was even more of a loser. According to Grace, the syndicate liked the character and suggested making him the protagonist of the strip, but they also pointed out that in that case he had to occasionally succeed at ''something''. So Grace created ButtMonkey Arnold instead to use many of the jokes he'd originally written for Ernie. It was also their idea that Ernie should have [[RedheadsAreUncool red hair]]. |
