* ActingForTwo: Claude Rich plays two parts: General Leclerc, with a moustache, and Lt. Pierre de la Fouchardière, without a moustache. He is credited at the end only with the part of Leclerc. His role as the young lieutenant is not by chance: Rich, as a teenager, was watching soldiers in the street when the real-life Pierre de la Fouchardière called him into a building to protect him.
* AllStarCast: A la ''Film/TheLongestDay'' in this regard. It stars Creator/KirkDouglas, Creator/GlennFord, Creator/GertFrobe, Creator/OrsonWelles, Creator/AnthonyPerkins, Creator/RobertStack and a ''huge'' bunch of high-profile French actors of the time, including Creator/CharlesBoyer, Creator/MichelPiccoli, Creator/JeanPierreCassel, Creator/YvesMontand, Leslie Caron, Creator/JeanPaulBelmondo, Creator/SimoneSignoret, Claude Rich, Creator/BrunoCremer, Daniel Gélin, Creator/AlainDelon, Sacha Pitoëff, Pierre Vaneck, and Creator/JeanLouisTrintignant. ''Film/{{West Side Story|1961}}'''s Creator/GeorgeChakiris had a small role as a GI in a tank, and a young, pre-fame Creator/PatrickDewaere was also there, as a Resistance extra.
* DeletedRole:
** Creator/RomySchneider filmed a [[TheCameo cameo]] that was cut from the final print. It's never been shown in any form, but [[https://www.granger.com/results.asp?inline=true&image=0159791&wwwflag=1&itemx=20 behind-the-scenes stills]] of it still survive.
** E.G. Marshall's scenes as a U.S. intelligence officer are cut from some prints of the film.
* ExecutiveMeddling: According to screenwriter Creator/FrancisFordCoppola, UsefulNotes/CharlesDeGaulle's government strictly controlled the film's production (pretty much the same way TV content was controlled through the Creator/{{ORTF}}). The latter would only permit location filming in UsefulNotes/{{Paris}} (which was, of course, crucial) if his rules were obeyed to the letter. In particular, he was anxious to minimize the part played in the Liberation by the French Communist Party; it was, said Coppola, blatant political censorship.
* FakeNationality:
** The American Creator/OrsonWelles as a Swedish consul.
** The Swiss Billy Frick as the Austrian-born German UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler.
* HostilityOnTheSet: Creator/OrsonWelles repeatedly [[WagTheDirector clashed with director]] René Clément, refusing to speak directly to him despite being fluent in French. Reportedly, Welles was upset that Clément had been given such a large budget for a project, while he had been struggling to find financing for his projects.
* IronyAsSheIsCast: The Jewish Creator/KirkDouglas portrayed General UsefulNotes/GeorgeSPatton, who was rabidly antisemite in private.
* MultipleLanguagesSameVoiceActor: The film's script was written in three different languages, and all the actors spoke their dialogue in their own languages (i.e. the French actors spoke French, the Americans spoke English, and the Germans spoke German), then the film would be dubbed into a single language depending on where it was released. Most of the French and German actors did their own dubbing, because many of them were bilingual.
* ReferencedBy: The final mission of ''[[VideoGame/{{Commandos}} Commandos 2: Men of Courage]]'' is titled "Is Paris Burning?" and is obviously set there, with the titular team having to prevent the city from being levelled by the Germans.
* {{Typecasting}}: UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler is played by Billy Frick, a Swiss-born character actor whose [[https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0294778/ entire career]] was predicated on the fact that, under a wig and the right grooming, he bore an uncanny resemblance to the real ''Führer''.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/YulBrynner was offered a major cameo.
** Creator/RoddyMcDowall was booked for a major cameo role, but was replaced before filming.
