* ActorAllusion: Creator/HisakoKanemoto's StarMakingRole as the eponymous Manga/SquidGirl gets a few references:
** In the [=OP=], an ''VideoGame/RType'' parody shows a tiny squid blasting away at Karen Tendo's giant head. Its body uses the same two shades of blue as Squid Girl's hair.
** In episode 12, there's a shot where Tendo is dressed up as the character.
* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer: Various sites and wikis sometimes give the characters birthdays that have never actually been confirmed in any official media and in fact contradict the source material. For example, some sources give Karen and Chiaki’s birthdays as August 12 and October 25 respectively, despite the fact that Chiaki’s birthday happens in Volume 5 (which explicitly takes place over the month of September) with Karen’s birthday happening in the next volume during the autumn after (most likely in October since Volume 7 mostly takes place over November).
* CreatorsFavorite: English dub scriptwriter Creator/PatrickSeitz has expressed the opinion that “[[https://twitter.com/seitz_unseen/status/914680238730133505?s=21 Aguri is best girl, hands down.]]”
* CrossDressingVoices: Keita Amano is voiced by Creator/MegumiHan in the Japanese version.
** Averted in English dub. Creator/BrandonMcInnis provides the voice of Keita Amano.
* NoExportForYou:
** Inverted in a meta sense. The show only has BlandNameProduct placement for [=PS4=] and [=3DS=] while the third major competitor in the market, Microsoft's Xbox line of consoles, is entirely absent. This is likely because of Xbox's lack of sales due to its unpopularity in Japan.
** As for reality, the original light novels and the manga have never been licensed in English (though they have been published in German). [[http://skythewood.blogspot.com/p/gamers.html A fan translation]] was completed on June 8, 2021.
* TheOtherDarrin: Karen Tendō was initially voiced by Creator/RisaTaneda for a 2015 commercial, but Creator/HisakoKanemoto voices her instead for the anime.
* SleeperHit: Climbed as high as #4 on Crunchyroll's most-viewed shows for summer 2017, a place usually reserved for long-running {{Shonen}} series.
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants:
** In the novels’ afterwords, Sekina Aoi admits that he is uncertain of what direction the plot will go in while writing the books, and mentions that for some of them the guiding principle is figuring out what would happen that would justify the title of a given volume.
** Speaking of which, the afterwords themselves are often stream of consciousness writing as Aoi usually states that he struggles to think up enough to say to meet the page quota.
* WriteWhatYouKnow: Unsurprisingly, the characters’ interest and knowledge of video games is a direct reflection of the author’s, a fact made apparent in his afterwords.
