* AuthorsSavingThrow: According to Creator/EdBrubaker, a lot of people were pissed [[spoiler: at [[DroppedABridgeOnHim the way Bucky died]] in ''ComicBook/FearItself'' #3, especially since it wasted a lot of the character development he had put in for a character he had recently [[{{Retcon}} brought back from the dead]]. Cue Issue 7.1 where Brubaker reveals that he survived and that he will be returning to the Winter Soldier identity in his own ongoing series in 2012.]]
* CreatorsPest: Creator/StanLee was not a fan of {{Kid Sidekick}}s. This is why Bucky was killed off and why he had an AgeLift in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Creator/MarkWaid wrote a story narrated by the Red Skull, very much from the TautologicalTemplar perspective, in which the Skull self-identifies as an embattled and unappreciated defender of the future of the white race against the rising tide of color. It's very much DeliberateValuesDissonance, as the story quite blatantly showcases his MoralMyopia and paranoia, and meant to show how delusional he has to be to consider himself a hero. But somewhere along the way, the editors still got cold feet and ordered a full last-minute rewrite to remove the self-justifications and increase the [[ForTheEvulz cackling villainy]], resulting in an utterly {{Anvilicious}} final product. See [[http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2007/01/18/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-86/ here]] for some elaboration. Eventually, the original version was published in a collected edition, Red Glare, and would be made available digitally on Marvel Unlimited (as of October 2016, both are still available).
* FollowTheLeader: Creator/MarkGruenwald was partly inspired to have Steve quit and be replaced by similar storylines in ''Iron Man'' and ''The Mighty Thor''.
* IronyAsSheIsCast: In a twisted case, as the Red Skull is a Nazi, among the actors to play him are Creator/SteveBlum (in ''WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'') and Creator/DavidWarner (in the character's debut in ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManTheAnimatedSeries''), both of whom are Jewish.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes:
** Until the early 2010s, there were very few Captain America trade paperbacks and those few that did exist were reprints of recently published stories. Since then, a lot has changed. As of right now, all of the Tales of Suspense run plus Captain America #100-267 have been collected across the Marvel Masterworks/Essential Marvel/Epic line of trade paperbacks. #287-317 have been reprinted and with the "Justice Is Served" Epic trade, that was expanded to #287-350. In addition, #371-386, #398-409, and #425-437 have been collected and the Epic trade "Man With No Country", finally collects the entire first Mark Waid run in full, including the old shame storyline "First Sign". Meanwhile, all of the Heroes Reborn volume has been collected (though the later Jurgans trades are now out of print) and even the controversial Marvel Knights mini-series.
** The Mark Gruenwald run was particularly guilty of this. While the Epic Collections included some portions of his legendary run, there were a multitude of gaps left uncollected, in combination with a bunch of storylines that saw subplots and endings printed in different books. It took until 2023 for the whole run to get the omnibus treatment and fans to be able to finally legally own the stories.
* PromotedFanboy: Creator/AnthonyMackie is a long-time fan of the Falcon and clearly relished the opportunity to play him on screen. He was even disappointed that his costume wasn't the character's red and white spandex.
* RunningTheAsylum: As with all comic books, this is inevitable, but two instances of well-received re-retcons stand out in recent years:
** Creator/EdBrubaker's first story line for Captain America was ''The Winter Soldier'', which rehabilitated KidSidekick ComicBook/BuckyBarnes from a laughingstock ComicBook/{{Robin}} wannabe who only existed to make Steve sad into a fan-favorite badass who has had two ongoings of his own. He has said in interviews that when he learned, as a kid, that the oft-flashbacked-to story of Bucky's death was not actually a story of its own but a retcon, that the first thing he would do if ever wrote Captain America was undo it. He did, and crowned it with Bucky's run as Captain America. Brubaker has also said that it is a good thing Mark Waid brought Sharon Carter back during his run, or else he would have done that, too.
** Rick Remender's run brought The Falcon in on the third story line and slowly reintegrated him until, like Bucky, it was time for him to take his turn as Captain America. Sam's second issue as Cap ''eviscerates'' the retconning of Sam's backstory as a good-natured social worker who was marooned on an island and fought the local injustice into being a thug and criminal who was brainwashed with false memories by the Red Skull to be a sleeper agent against Steve. Not only does Sam reject the retcon as being the true false memories, he says that the Red Skull was ''counting on'' everyone who heard it being racist enough not to question it. Remender, like Brubaker, has since said that he has been wanting to eliminate that story since he read it as a kid.
* TheShelfOfMovieLanguishment: A cartoon based on the series was scheduled to premiere on Creator/FoxKids in the fall of 1998, but the bankruptcy of Creator/MarvelComics meant it was not to be.
* SimilarlyNamedWorks: ''Creator/ImageComics'' have a cyborg CaptainPatriotic called [=SuperPatriot=] that spun off from ''ComicBook/SavageDragon''.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: J. M. [=DeMatteis=] wanted to have Captain America stay an 80 year old man/give up being Captain America to be a peace activist in Captain America #300 and have the issue end with Nomad assassinating Cap, in order to shame the US and the Soviet Union into embracing peace. Oh and a recently introduced character known as Black Crow (a Native American hero) would have become the new Captain America.
** Creator/RogerStern and Creator/JohnByrne once pitched a "Bucky Returns" storyline where Captain America would find that ComicBook/BuckyBarnes survived the plane explosion, but had lost his arms and legs and was disfigured (but not Literature/JohnnyGotHisGun disfigured, as far as Bucky simply having his face burnt and having full speech/hearing/sight). Bucky would call for Captain America after finding out that he was going to die, leading to a tearjerker scene as Cap would be reunited with Bucky to say hello to him, before dying.
** After his return in ''Captain America: Reborn'', Steve originally was going to take the Shield back. However, seeing that many fans had grown to love Bucky in the Role of Cap, they decided to let him be Cap. So they temporarily shared the title.
** Cap's original name was slated to be "Super-American", but Creator/JackKirby & Joe Simon decided on "Captain America" for the name, citing that there weren't enough "Captain" superheroes.
** In the late 90s, Marvel and Saban were planning a solo animated series for Cap on Creator/FoxKids, and stories, character models, and a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd7VinvTfiw one-minute pitchfilm]] were all made, but was canned because of Marvel's bankruptcy; its slot in the Fox Kids lineup was filled by ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretFilesOfTheSpyDogs''.
** A Captain America musical was planned in 1985, in the hopes of duplicating the success of Theatre/{{Annie}}. Insufficient financial backing meant that the project would never make it to the Broadway stage.
* WordOfGay: [[https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/black-widow-star-crossed Mark Waid]] once described Natasha and Bucky, who are themselves a couple, as having both had crushes on Steve Rogers in the past. However, while Natasha has explicitly gotten together with Steve in some continuities, thus far no direct evidence of Bucky having such feelings for Steve have appeared on-page.
