Context Trivia / ThirtySecondsToMars

Go To

* BreakthroughHit: "The Kill".
* FanCommunityNickname: The Echelon.
** Originally Mars Army was intended to refer to both their news letter and the general fanbase as a whole, with Echelon being the name for those members of the fanbase that did active street team promotion for the band. Echelon has largely superceded Mars Army as the main nickname with the advent of social media, regardless if fans do active promotion or not. Mars Army is only (rarely) used by the band within its original context, mainly to refer to the newsletter.
** And then there's [[http://www.thirtysecondstomarsstore.com/products/marsling-tote Mars merch]] with the term "Marsling", which really isn't a FanCommunityNickname as much as it is a point of confusion for Echelon wondering just what the heck a "Marsling" is, seeing as the band isn't using it in any way.
** Back in ye olden times, people who were only into Mars for Jared were called "biscuits".
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: A version of "The Kill" video with a MidVidSkit featuring Shannon, Tomo, and Matt that aired on the [[Creator/AustralianBroadcastingCorporation Australian]] music video program Rage is circulating online but is surprisingly absent from the official Mars Youtube/VEVO channel.
** Around the beginning of the [=VyRT=] [=PPV=] service, only Mars 300 was made legally available for download. As of late 2013-early 2014, Mars has been playing catch up. All the [=VyRT=] [=PPVs=] except for Mars X and Film/TheShining[[note]]which won't get a release due to being a stream of the movie itself[[/note]] [[https://beta.vyrt.com/vault are available]] for purchase. However, various [=VyRT=] broadcasts, mainly the Mars Labs, were censored for their initial re-broadcast (called [=ReVyRTs=]) as punishment for people posting video clips and audio of Love Lust Faith + Dreams demos. This worked as well as you'd expect, as people who had brought the [=VyRT=] but were only able to watch the [=ReVyRT=] found out about the cut content. The fans [[StreisandEffect went to find it in the places Mars disapproved of]], which they likely wouldn't have done if it wasn't cut. If you want to watch Mars X or a guaranteed uncensored [=VyRT=], at this point your only options are not legal and [[DigitalPiracyIsEvil definitely not Mars approved]].
* PromotedFanboy: Tomo was an Echelon before he became a member of Mars and got his chance to audition through ''camping outside Jared's house for two weeks until he mustered up the courage to confront him''.
* ThePeteBest: Solon Bixler, who left in 2003 due to touring issues and is currently in Great Northern, was replaced by Tomo.
* ReferencedBy:
** ''WebVideo/SwordArtOnlineAbridged'' uses a sample of "This is War" for the opening theme.
** ''Webcomic/AquaRegia'' has the 4th chapter cover art being a sincere {{Homage}} to their SelfTitledAlbum, having the hero being dressed as the boy of the cover, although, in color. And an afterword telling how much of an [[SugarWiki/GushingAboutShowsYouLike amazing album it is and people should hear it more.]]
** The band formed by the titular character of ''WesternAnimation/RandyCunninghamNinthGradeNinja'' and his best friend is titled "30 Seconds to ''Math''".
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: The "This is War" video. The video was originally directed by someone other than Jared, but apparently was so not to the band's standards that the band fired him and Jared recut the video. This lead to the video being released an entire year after it was shot.
** Artifact, eventually released on the festival circuit, with DVD release and digital download along with the official non-festival premiere streaming on [=VyRT=], after ''five years''.
* StreisandEffect: When the Mars Labs were broadcast, performances and other sneak peeks of demos from LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS were cut from the re-broadcasts that took place a day after the live show as "punishment" for people sharing audio and video of them online. In the process of trying to combat piracy of their event, they ended up making fans who had already purchased access to it but were only able to watch the re-broadcast resort to finding the cut content through the places they were trying to "punish" in the first place.
** For years, pictures of some cheesy modeling photoshoots Jared did earlier in his career circulated amongst the fandom. They were treated as a funny footnote. Eventually, they cropped up on Tumblr in 2013 and suddenly The Hive (Mars' social media department) started forcing the posts to be taken down. While there was a lot of talk from some Echelon about "respecting Jared's wishes", takedown notices for old cheesy pictures of Jared that most people didn't even know about lead to more people finding out about the pictures and reposting them. Let's just say The Hive hasn't been trying to take any of those reposts down yet...
* Website/{{Tumblr}}: The song "This is War" is heavily featured among the site's {{fandom}}s, since its lyrics state various {{archetype}}s which are easy to match to characters.
** On a related note, Thirty Seconds to Mars songs are extremely popular with FanVid makers all over the internet, ''especially'' "This Is War".
** During [=VyRT=] the Mars Lab II, Mars and their crew posed in silly ways specifically to [[http://jared-leto.tumblr.com/post/37025249177/maryhurricane-smurfmadness-vyrt-gif give Tumblr something to make a .gif out of]].
