* {{Blooper}}: Giuseppe's name is mispelled in the closing credits.
* CreatorBacklash: Despite his executive producer credit, Creator/GabrielByrne distanced himself from the project, chiefly due to the liberties taken with the details of the story.
* TheDanza: Though Creator/SaffronBurrows is credited as "Girl in Commune", a character calls her "Saffron" at one point ([[ItMakesSenseInContext though that could just be]] the HippieName she gave herself).
* DawsonCasting: Beatie Edney played 17-year-old Carol Richardson while being at least 30 at the time of filming herself (although she's later aged up as her character spends 15 years in prison).
* DeletedRole: Paul O'Grady played a prisoner but was mostly cut from the final print. He does appear in one scene blowing a kiss to Gerry.
* DoingItForTheArt: Creator/EmmaThompson had actively campaigned on behalf of the Guilford Four in real life.
* DyeingForYourArt: Creator/DanielDayLewis lost thirty pounds for his role.
* FakeBrit: There were several Irish actors playing members of the British legal profession, notably both the trial and appeal judges and the trial defence counsel.
* FakeIrish: Mostly averted, except for Creator/DanielDayLewis, Creator/PetePostlethwaite and Creator/MarkSheppard. However, Day-Lewis's father was Irish, he got Irish citizenship and lives there, while Sheppard also has some Irish heritage. All of them put on good accents too.
* MethodActing: Creator/DanielDayLewis spent nights in the jail cell on the set as crew members threw water and verbal abuse at him. He also kept the Irish accent on and off the set for the entire shooting schedule.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Bono was offered the role of Paul Hill. Music/{{U2}}'s busy touring schedule prevented him from accepting it.
** Gerry Conlon had befriended Creator/JohnnyDepp during the summer of 1990, and was keen for Depp to play him in a film. Depp would later provide the foreword for Gerry Conlon's biography.
