Raped by her father, forced into marriage to a man named Mister, and separated from her beloved sister Nettie, Celie withdraws. But in the coming years, the companionship of the strong-willed Shug Avery, Mister's old flame, and Sofia, Mister's brief daughter-in-law, help Celie find herself.

A revival starring Creator/CynthiaErivo as Celie, Music/JenniferHudson as Shug, and Creator/DanielleBrooks as Sofia ran from 2015-2017. A film adaptation of the musical, starring Music/FantasiaBarrino, Creator/DanielleBrooks (reprising her role from the revival), Creator/TarajiPHenson, Creator/ColmanDomingo, Creator/CoreyHawkins, Music/{{HER\|Musician}}, Creator/HalleBailey, [[Creator/AunjanueEllis Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor]], and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi was announced set for a December 2023 release.
