[[Music/NeutralMilkHotel This indie rock band]] [[TearJerker has some rather sad songs]].
----

* ''Music/InTheAeroplaneOverTheSea'' is a very emotional album, and is incredibly hard to sit through for some.
** "Oh Comely" has the following lyrics, followed by a repetition of "know your enemies," probably a reference to the neighbor that sold out [[Literature/TheDiaryOfAYoungGirl Anne Frank]]'s family to the Nazis. It's chilling.
--->I know they buried her body with others,\
Her sister and mother and five-hundred families\
And will she remember me fifty years later,\
I wished I could save her in some sort of time machine
** However, it can hit you all at once in the last song, "Two-Headed Boy pt. 2". In addition to the song having some of the most blunt and forward lyrics of the whole album, you can practically feel the anguish in Jeff Mangum's voice when he sings it, especially in light of his nervous breakdown he had after completing this album. The song additionally ends with the line "But don't hate her when she gets up to leave," after which you hear Jeff simply get up, set his guitar down, and leave. It's one thing in and of itself, but [[RealitySubtext when you realize]] that it's the ending of the last song on the last album that he recorded with Neutral Milk Hotel, it can make one feel rather sad.
--->And in my dreams, you're alive and you're crying,\
As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet,\
Rings of flowers 'round your eyes and I'll love you,\
For the rest of your life when you're ready\
[...]\
And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle,\
God is a place where some holy spectacle lies\
When we break, we'll wait for our miracle,\
God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life
** "Holland 1945". A song with lyrics about the holocaust is always going to be sad, but the second verse could yet again be interpreted as losing someone to suicide, more specifically, [[RealitySubtext a sibling of Jeff’s friend who died this way.]]
--->And now we ride the circus wheel\
With your dark brother wrapped in white\
[[GoodbyeCruelWorld Says it was good to be alive]]\
But now he rides a comet's flame\
And won't be coming back again\
[...]\
He didn't mean to make you cry\
With sparks that ring and bullets fly\
On empty rings around your heart\
The world just screams and falls apart
* ''Music/OnAveryIsland'' is also sad. "Three Peaches", for example, is about comforting a friend/loved one who attempted suicide and failed. [[CreatorBreakdown Even worse]], Jeff wrote the song about his girlfriend at the time, who actually had attempted; [[HarsherInHindsight years after the album's release, she made another attempt and passed away]].
-->There is no dream,\
So wake up\
And if the holidays don't hollow out your eyes,\
Then press yourself against whatever\
You find to be beautiful and trembling with life\
[[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments Because I'm so happy you didn't die]]
* From the Jittery Joe's variation of "Engine".
-->For I am an engine and I'm holding on.
-->The world is all bending and breaking from me.
