1	Any band involving singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek, specifically Red House Painters and/or Music/SunKilMoon, is almost scientifically engineered to be depressing. Music/RedHousePainters are a strange case. Not only are about 90% of their songs pure TearJerker, but their music has been rumored to give people eerily suicidal thoughts. Let's put it this way, they took a subgenre called "slowcore" and decided to sadden it up ''even more'' by calling it '''sad'''core.

4	* The most notorious example is [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHxyy7bvH6w "Shadows"]], which is just Mark Kozelek alone at the piano singing about a couple that forces themselves to stay in a relationship despite how wrong they are for each other. Yes, this type of subject matter is a regular thing for them.
5	* Heck, even when they're ''not'' trying to invoke this trope the fans still try to interpret this song as a TearJerker. And for good reason. Take [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeRPCQnupuo "Summer Dress"]] for instance. The song is a tribute to Creator/EmilyDickinson who wrote a poem about herself feeling unloved and like to go to the beach to calm herself. However, because of the way Kozelek wrote the lyrics, many fans interpreted it as a girl who was sad with her life and drowned herself at the beach.
6	* Their cover of Music/PaulMcCartney's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJU_qjdShgc "Silly Love Songs"]] turns the song from an uplifting ballad to a pure gut-wrenching tearjerker.
7	* Their cover for Music/TheCars' "All Mixed Up" is sad on its own just with the way it's performed... But the music video offers a visual interpretation of the song: An imaginary friend that realizes she doesn't exist. 8	** As a combined Tearjerker, there's the World Trade Center looming in the background... as well as a good portion of the video shot in the courtyard of the twin towers.
9	* In addition to the aforementioned tracks, ''Ocean Beach'' also reels two big ones at the end in the forms of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eqv3DJJ6eU ''Moments'']] and the melancholy closing track [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBL28tgXK18 ''Drop'']]
10	** There's also the brief, yet very effective and underrated song known as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5LatAkPKDk "Red Carpet"]].
11	* Almost the entire album of ''Rollercoaster'' is considered to be an extremely rough listen to make it all the way through for some. The constant visuals of murder, suicide, depression, drug abuse, and violence are just way too much for people with rough pasts to take. However, the album makes its point with the track "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxyKqH2E4sM Strawberry Hill"]], which is considered one of the band's best songs. The song details a friend of Kozelek's that was threatening suicide and his attempt to convince them they are a wonderful person and not to kill themselves, as Kozelek knows and understands what they're going through. This suddenly makes all the overly sad imagery of the album come together as an uplifting message from Kozelek to depressed people to not give up and that all is not bleak and sad. The final track "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8hLzLwscow Brown Eyes"]] brings the album to a close on an uplifting note.
12	** And then the FridgeBrilliance kicks in when you figure out that the person he's telling not to kill themselves is in fact his younger self. Good luck not crying knowing that now!
13	** Then there's an alternative song interpretation where some people think they hear sarcasm in Kozelek's voice the entire time. This turns the tables even more by saying that suicidal people are beyond our help and that the people who try to help them are hypocrites.
14	** Also noteworthy from the ''Rollercoaster'' album are [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_3PYEjFBgo "Grace Cathedral Park"]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFQ4nuUuwNo "Katy Song"]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pRO3wBQmaY "Things Mean A Lot"]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riqgGnvOG1U the title track]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urbcmEF3TGM the piano version of "Mistress"]], and the [[EpicRocking dirge like track]] known as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGShlWlpB1E ''Mother'']]
15	** The final two verses of [[http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/45082/ ''Katy Song'']] are particularly tear-jerking.
16	* The ''Bridge'' album gives us a great one by the name of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHLWqqb5--Y "Bubble"]].
17	** Another track of that album called [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMbAPx_m6Mo "Blindfold"]] is also one.
18	** Then there's "Uncle Joe". The opening line "Where have all the people gone in my life?" is enough to get you teary-eyed. The rest of the song is just pure depression.
19	*** It doesn't help that "Uncle Joe", just like "Strawberry Hill" is about Kozelek's struggle with depression and suicide. Uncle Joe was the uncle he was living with at the time.
20	* ''Music/SongsForABlueGuitar'', while not entirely as depressing as ''Rollercoaster'' can offer several nostalgia-induced tearjerkers. The entirety of the album seems to be about the troubles growing up and making the slow transition to adulthood.
21	* The first track on ''Down Colorful Hill'' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwTA2ekGZCE "24"]] definitely qualifies as one, brutally showing how much GrowingUpSucks.
22	** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BMZ7wfLyno "Medicine Bottle"]] also qualifies when you realize that the character described in the song is actually Kozelek himself.
23	** The closing track off the album [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrT0OZsdFfU "Michael"]], based on a friend of Kozelek's, is also one.
24	** Arguably what makes "Michael" so sad is '''not''' the fact it's a lament of losing a friend, but rather it's a lament of Mark not being in contact with his old childhood friend and then remembering all the heartwarming moments with him. The last part of the song however is both this ''and'' a heartwarming moment as Kozelek still calls Michael "My best friend" in the end. It can send chills and tears on fans's spines.
25	* Even ''Old Ramon'' arguably their most upbeat album, has a big one in the form of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W0DWYwsLu4 "Smokey".]]
