6	* The novels take a lot from the atmosphere and story chops popularized by the ''Literature/BoogiepopSeries'', down to Haruhi's surname, which is likely taken from a secondary character from ''Boogiepop'' named Takako Suzumiya.
7	** Being HumanAliens sent by an universal intelligence to inspect humans, Yuki and Asakura resemble thematically Echoes and Manticore, especially the latter, a dark-haired model student with psycho tendences whom the former has to put down for good.
8	** Taniguchi's surname also likely comes from Masaki Taniguchi, one of the ''Boogiepop'' series leads. Ironically, while this Taniguchi is a huge pervert and finds himself being a CasanovaWannabe all the time, the one named Masaki stood out in-story for the opposite reason yet was very popular with his female classmates.

Later volumes only increase the similarities, as just like Nagisa is said to be not just an angel, but the incarnation of the most powerful of them, Koizumi's role is revealed to be [[spoiler:not a mere member of his organization, but their founder and most powerful esper.]]
13	** The plot of ''Disappearance'' can be seen as re-creating Rei's actions in ''End of Evangelion''. [[spoiler:Yuki connects with her own emotions and the people around her, and after a repeating cycle of suffering decides to rebel against her creator and use her full power to change the world; but gives the final decision to the boy who has been by her side all along.]] Very different plot, but similar character motivations.
