29	* Inverted in the finale of ''Series/CriminalMindsBeyondBorders''. FBI agent Jack's son Ryan (a cop) is taken hostage and when Jack arrives to rescue him, the hostage taker is holding a gun to his head and gets Jack to hand over his own gun by threatening to kill Ryan if he doesn't. Jack slides it just to within Ryan's reach and waits for the right moment to scream, "Ryan, shoot ME!" repeatedly. Ryan refuses at first, but finally gives in, startling the hostage taker, which allows Ryan to take him out while Jack lies very still, bleeding. What the perp didn't realize was that they'd both been trained to shoot ''not'' to kill, and Ryan had purposefully hit Jack in a non-lethal spot ''above'' his heart.
30	* A variation in ''Series/{{Defiance}}'': The hostage is a wanted criminal, the hostage taker is Nolan's old army buddy turned bounty hunter. Nolan settles their stand-off over who gets custody of the bad guy by shooting him in the head. His buddy is not amused.
31	* ''Series/{{Demons}}'': In the first episode, the protagonist is instructed to shoot his ([[ShesNotMyGirlfriend not]]) girlfriend with magic ammunition, which he is told will only bruise her at worst, but will disintegrate the monster holding her captive. He complies, and after that, she's pissed at how little hesitation it took for him to shoot.
32	* ''Series/DoctorWho'': In "[[Recap/DoctorWho2005CSTheChristmasInvasion The Christmas Invasion]]", the Sycorax use blood control to make a third of the Earth's population go walk to the edge of a cliff and threaten to make them jump unless they are allowed to take humans as slaves. Then the Doctor wakes up, seemingly delirious from regeneration sickness, stumbles over to the BigRedButton that would make the hostages jump, and slaps it down. Which is when it turns out blood control can't overpower survival instinct, the Doctor called their bluff.
33	* ''Series/TheEqualizer'': Robert [=McCall=] is holding a gun to the head of a DoubleAgent, and offers to swap him for one of his men being held prisoner by a KGB cell. The head of the cell replies, "Why don't we dispense with the formalities" and [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness shoots the double agent dead]]. Caught without his human shield, [=McCall=] is then taken prisoner too.
34	* ''Series/ForTheTermOfHisNaturalLife'': In this Australian mini-series, an attempt by convicts to escape ends with a sergeant being held hostage, facing a small cannon aimed by his fellow marines. The sergeant orders them to light the fuse and kill them all. Realising he's not bluffing, the convicts are forced to surrender.

Cadet Hailey's response, after the dust clears (and the recruit leader guessed wrong), is that they should have stunned them both and sorted it out later. Of course, that particular situation would only have worked since the training missions use "intars", alien tech that mimics normal weapons but can only stun an opponent. The typical nonlethal weapon an SG team would have is a zat gun, which stuns with one shot but kills with the second, and Daniel claimed Carter had already shot him once.
51	** A more serious version of this trope happens when the Goa'uld significantly overestimate human aversion to killing their own. One symbiote inside a Russian soldier is nearly killed when the soldier's commander, who doesn't care about the host, hands him a live grenade instead of a stolen artifact.
52	** The SGC is also aware that the hosts of System Lords have been driven nearly insane by millennia of being trapped in their own bodies. Consequently, when Apophis argues after being captured that they can't kill him without killing his host it falls completely flat. 59	** In the ''Series/StarTrekEnterprise'' episode "[[Recap/StarTrekEnterpriseS03E09NorthStar North Star]]", during a shoot-out on a [[PlanetOfHats Wild West planet]], T'Pol gets a six-shooter put to her head. Reed shrugs, shoots her, then the hostage taker while he's still gaping at Reed's apparently ruthless action. His phase pistol is [[TheParalyzer set on stun]].
60	* ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'': Season 6 reveals that soulless [[spoiler:Sam]] once shot a woman being used as a HumanShield by a monster he was hunting. Once she falls over dead, he then kills the monster.
