[[header:Issue #1: Storm King]]

With a bit of [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall talk to the reader]], the Storm King introduces himself as his army, carried by airship, attacks the realm of Abyssinia, a land ruled by a sentient cat race. The army quickly seizes the capital city of Panthera, and while most of the citizens flee, one of the cat-people, Capper, sneaks onto the Storm King's airship.

The Storm King corners the King and Queen of Abyssinia, who are ready to turn the kingdom over to him. But the Storm King quickly refuses it, and states his true intent: to rob the kingdom of any magical items and other valuables. He and his army raid the kingdom's vaults, finding among its treasures the Misfortune Malachite, a stone that is said to bring bad luck to anyone that possesses it, according to the king. The Storm King ignores his warning and proceeds to return to his ship with the rest of his wealth.

The Storm King orders his second-in-command, a cloud-like creature named Strife, onto their next target. As the Storm King returns to explaining his motives to the reader, the airship is suddenly attacked by an armada of airships piloted by parrot-like pirates. Strife reveals he double-crossed the Storm King, giving the route in advance to the parrots so they could intercept the airship and collect all the wealth the Storm King had gathered. With his minions held at sword-point, there's little the Storm King can do except watch as Strife and the parrots take off with his gains. He grabs his cowardly servant Grubber and promotes him to his new second-in-command, and orders the airship to follow the pirates.

[[header:Issue #2: Captain Celaeno and the Pirates]]
Prior to events of the first issue, Captain Celaeno and her crew of pirate parrots have become bored of seizing worthless treasure from Storm King's forces. Strife contacts her and offers her the treasure stowed on the Storm King's main airship, and provides the route the Storm King will be using to leave Abyssinia, in exchange to be taken away with her crew.

After successfully pillaging the Storm King and taking some of their ships, Celaeno and her crew assets the treasure they have collected but come across the Misfortune Malachite. She doesn't trust the magical item and moves to one of the empty ships in their armada to stow it there, but instead comes across Capper and his friend Chummer, who had stowed on board it in Abyssinia. Celaeno doesn't mind their presence and is about to show them hospitality, when suddenly the Storm King's ship arrives and stalls the ship. After dealing with Strife's disloyalty, the Storm King is upset that Celaeno stole his treasure, but makes her an offer she can't refuse: To have her and her crew help with his further raids of the nations of Equestria. Though Celaeno reluctantly agrees, she prevents the Storm King's forces from stopping the airship she had just been on, now piloted by Capper and Chummer, from escaping. Capper and Chummer see the ships leaving and head off to find a safe place without any interference from the Storm King and his troops, unaware that Celaeno had left the Misfortune Malachite in their ship's hull.

[[header:Issue #3: Capper of Abyssinia]]
After escaping the Storm King and his forces thanks to Captain Celaeno's sacrifice with preventing them from being caught, Capper and Chummer soon find their airship losing altitude and crashing into a desert. Scavenging what they can from the wreckage, including the Misfortune Malachite, they set off to find civilization.

After some time, they reach the city of Klugetown, a run-down location full of various creatures of all sorts that only see bartering as their way of life. Due to their own pasts as orphans back in Abyssinia, living on the streets to survive, Capper and Chummer use their skills to try and make ends meet with food, water, and money. However, their actions draw unwanted attention, and a ruse they set up allows them to meet the local crime boss, Verko, who reveals how he's in charge of most business in Klugetown with his mob.

When Capper and Chummer reveal themselves to be in possession of the Misfortune Malachite, knowing how much value it is worth to acquire it, Verko agrees to pay anything they want in return for it. However, that night, Capper and Chummer discuss their future, and Capper is considering finding somewhere to settle down and call it quits with his life as a thief. Chummer seems to support it, and the two go happily to sleep.

The next morning, Verko has provided an airship with everything the two cats requested in return for the Malachite, but once Chummer climbs on-board, he double-crosses both Verko and Capper, and attempts to escape with both the airship and the Malachite. Capper attempts to climb on-board and reason with Chummer, but Chummer feared that Capper was going to abandon him and their old life as thieves, so he chose to abandon him first as he did not want to give up his thievery anytime soon. In his attempts to get Capper off the airship, Chummer sets the deck on fire, and finally manages to throw Capper off and back towards Klugetown below.

As Verko is furious at how the airship won't make it out of the desert in its current condition and he was screwed out of the Malachite, Capper tells him Chummer was never his friend as he puts on a red coat that fell off the airship with him and walks away, heartbroken.

[[header:Issue #4: Tempest of Equestria]]
Tempest is seen having been wandering for some time after leaving her homeland of Equestria behind, when she comes across the wreckage of Chummer's airship and finds the Misfortune Malachite in the ruins. She is soon confronted by Grubber and several of the Storm King's infantry, demanding the Malachite back, but Tempest fights them off with her unstable magic due to her broken horn and escapes.

Arriving in Klugetown, Tempest decides to gather information at a local tavern before inspecting the Malachite and hearing voices from it telling her to get rid of it because of the misfortune it brings to its owners. Heeding the warnings, Tempest prepares to leave Klugetown with a caravan led by an Earth pony named Rambler, heading for Bleak Valley.
