!! ''Super 17 Arc'' has the following tropes
* AlmightyMom: Apropos of nothing, Chichi and Videl suddenly suit up and decide that they want to help their men fight against this new threat, recruiting Bra and a reluctant Bulma along as well. Chichi wears a tin cooking pot, while Videl puts on her Great Saiyaman #2 costume. Alas, by the time they arrive, Super #17 has already been defeated by Goku and Android #18.
* AntiHero: As selfless as his sacrifice was in the previous arc, Piccolo can still be ruthless and pragmatic when he needs to be. When King Yemma refuses to send him to Hell, Piccolo begins blasting away at the landscape in Heaven, enraging Yemma enough to comply with his demands. Once he gets to Hell, Piccolo begins working on his plan to help Goku escape. For the rest of the series, he remains in Hell to help the Onis subdue rowdy undead villains.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: Whenever Super #17 absorbs energy, he has to strike a particular pose which leaves his body momentarily defenceless. Goku takes advantage of this by letting Android #18 pelt #17 with energy blasts, before impaling him straight through the chest with a Dragon Fist.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Despite never using it before in his Perfect form, Cell desperately resorts to trying to absorb Goku with his tail when every other attack fails. In this series, getting absorbed by an enemy is usually an instant Game Over. When Cell seemingly succeeds, Goku just ''crawls right out of his tail'', no worse for wear, and continues beating him up.
* BigBad: Super #17, a powerful merged fighter comprised of the original Android #17 and his fully artificial doppelganger, Hell Fighter #17.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Android #17 is brainwashed by Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu to obey their commands. While Krillin and Android #18 are briefly able to get through to him, he never gets to fully reassert himself and dies at the hands of Goku.
* TheBusCameBack: Android #17 returns for the first time since his minor cameo at the climax of the Majin Buu arc. Unfortunately, he spends most of this arc in a brainwashed state.
* TheCameo: Many of the previous foes throughout the series make quick cameos as they escape from Hell. Interestingly, among them include some extra-canonical villains from the NonSerialMovie series, most notably Cooler.
* CurbStompBattle: Goku makes an absolute joke out of Freeza and Cell during their battle in Hell. Unable to damage him at all, they resort to freezing him alive with a new combination attack, but Goku thaws himself out and freezes them with a snow machine. Most of the other undead villains are disposed of with minimal effort by the Z-Warriors.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Though he did play a major role in the Baby arc, Uub gets some needed spotlight in the mini TournamentArc just before the Super #17 arc officially starts. Alas, he goes right back to being a glorified extra for the remainder of the series.
* DeathIsCheap: Krillin dies for the ''fourth'' time, this time at the hands of his own mind-controlled brother-in-law. He finally breaks the previous tie he held with Chaozu as the character with the most deaths. Don't cry, he's brought back to life again by the end of the next arc.
* ExpyCoexistence: Dr. Myuu is pretty much an alien reskin of Dr. Gero, right down to the walrus moustache and strange headgear. The arc is kicked off when the two coincidentally meet in Hell.
* FusionDance: The original Android #17 and Hell Fighter #17 do this to create Super #17.
* HistoryRepeats: Quite a few times in this arc.
** Nappa once again destroys an entire city with the flick of his wrist upon his arrival to Earth.
** Android #19 once again gets blown up by a Saiyan, with only his decapitated head left in tact. Rather than Vegeta, it's Pan who does the honours this time.
** Dr. Gero is once again betrayed and murdered by Android #17. Dr. Myuu also gets the same treatment, reminiscent of how Baby killed him in the last arc.
** Goku kills Super #17 almost exactly the same way as he killed Demon King Piccolo.
* IdiotBall: It takes Goku quite a while to figure out that Super #17 absorbs energy to grow stronger. For a long stretch of the fight, he seemingly forgets that there are other ways of fighting besides firing ki blasts, much to the satisfaction of Super #17 who gleefully eats up every Kamehameha that gets thrown at him. Then, without much provocation, Goku immediately goes for a costly self-destructing attack that predictably does nothing to Super #17 and leaves him totally drained. Overall, it's not Goku's finest hour.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: #18 invokes this in the final moments of the battle against Super #17. Goku theorizes she did manage to get through to him as he seemingly left himself open to Goku's Dragon Fist attack.
* InexplicablyAwesome: {{Downplayed}}. Although both Android #17 and Hell Fighter #17 are noted to have powered up considerably since the Cell arc (albeit, not nearly to the same extent as Android #17's counterpart from the ''Super'' timeline), it may stretch suspension of disbelief that a fusion of these two relatively weak foes can NoSell the combined attacks of all the Z-Warriors then practically ''defeat'' Super Saiyan 4 Goku. As noted above, part of his success rate can be attributed to the heroes grabbing the IdiotBall inordinately often.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Vegeta gives one to Nappa before [[CurbStompBattle he kills him again]].
* RecycledPremise: The plot of various deceased villains escaping Hell was wholly recycled from the NonSerialMovie ''Anime/DragonBallZFusionReborn'', with an added dose of Cell arc references thanks to Android #17's return.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: The normally stoic Android #18 gets '''pissed''' when her twin brother suddenly rolls up out of nowhere, tries to control her, then shoots her husband dead, all right in front of their young daughter. She flies into an almighty rage against #17, screaming at him to give Krillin back while slamming him through some buildings.
* ToHellAndBack: Goku winds up getting tricked into coming to Hell, where he goes through a few trials and tribulations, including a ([[CurbStompBattle heavily one-sided]]) rematch against both Freeza and Cell. Luckily, Piccolo helps him escape.
* TournamentArc: Starts off with one in the tried-and-true Dragon Ball fashion. Uub, disguised as Papayaman, takes on Mr. Satan in the final round. Thanks to some prompting from Majin Buu within his subconscious, Uub ultimately decides to throw the match in order to preserve Mr. Satan's status as Earth's champion. Fair play to Satan, he manages to take a beating from a semi-serious Uub. Meanwhile, Goku gets demoted to the junior division due to his restored youth, and [[DavidVersusGoliath a scrawny kid manages to ring him out through sheer dumb luck]].
* TurnedAgainstTheirMasters: Neither of the evil doctors can catch a break when it comes to their creations betraying them. First, Super #17 kills Gero when Myuu reveals that he programmed Super #17 to only obey him. Later, the merged android turns on Myuu as well after being provoked into a rage.
* VillainDecay: Pretty much everyone who doesn't have the number 17 somewhere in their name.
** Freeza and Cell are practically reduced to a GoldfishPoopGang, unable to scratch a child-sized Goku (admittedly, Goku had gotten much stronger since he last encountered either of them), and they are foiled very humiliatingly.
** All of the other deceased villains that invade Earth are reduced to cannon fodder dispatched easily by the Z-Warriors.
* VillainTeamUp: The plot is kickstarted when a recently dead Dr. Myuu happens across Dr. Gero in Hell. They immediately team up and concoct a scheme to break all the villains out of Hell. Later, Freeza and Cell team up against Goku. [[VillainDecay It's not as cool as it sounds.]]
* WeAreTeamCannonFodder: The Z-Warriors themselves become this as soon as Super #17 arrives on the scene. The combined might of Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Uub barely phases him. Naturally, only Goku is able to make any headway against Super #17, but even with his new Super Saiyan 4 transformation at his disposal, it's a challenging fight.
