'''Mission 5:'''
!Hengsha

Malik tells Adam to look out the window at Hengsha as they near the shoreline. He's shocked to discover how massive the city is, and asks himself how he's supposed to find any answers in a city that big before they land.

After exiting on the roof of the Hung Hua Hotel, Adam heads inside and finds a hooker arguing with her pimp. He breaks up the argument simply by walking in, and the pimp walks off with an apology that suggests he's mistaken Adam for a "client". The grateful woman, Mei, thanks Adam for his help and says that the pimp has been forcing girls to get augments so they will become dependent on neuropyzyne and not complain. Mei asks him to rescue a fellow prostitute named Ning who has disappeared in the Daigong District, and he agrees to help.

Adam finds a bouncer, Chuanli, down the street who knows Ning's location, and forces him to give up the information. Soon after, he dispatches several thugs and rescues the grateful Ning, who thanks him and says she owes him her life before leaving.

Heading to Hengsha Court Gardens, Adam discovers that the immediate area has been trashed and armed soldiers are patrolling the area. He finds a computer that reveals a Dutch hacker named Arie van Bruggen, also known as "Windmill", is the one who was attacking Sarif's systems. Van Bruggen is trying to avoid the soldiers, which are from the Belltower [[PrivateMilitaryContractors private contractor group]]. He contacts Malik to relay the information and she says that one way to find him would be to check out the nearby Hive nightclub for any information on his whereabouts.

She also relays that the club's owner is Tong Si Hung, who is rumored to be linked to the Chinese triads.

Adam finds the Hive and sneaks in through a back entrance. Inside, he finds a bartender in the VIP Lounge and asks where Tong is. The bartender plays dumb and tries to insult Adam for being an outsider, and an argument ensues. Adam eventually ascertains that the bartender ''is'' Tong, and convinces him that they could do a lot by pooling their information and helping him find the location of Van Bruggen. Tong tells him to come down to his office so they can talk further.

Downstairs, Tong mocks Adam for his association with Sarif Industries, who he claims are one of many biotech firms failing with their investments in augmentations. Tong tells him that Van Bruggen is at a capsule hotel called the Alice Garden Pods, and sends him on his way.

Adam heads to the Alice Garden Pods and finds Van Bruggen. He confronts the hacker over his involvement in the hack during the Sarif attack, and Van Bruggen readily admits that it was him, and that doing so was the worst mistake he ever made, because he's now on the run from Belltower. The hacker says that he was ordered to hack Sarif by Zhao Yun Ru, the woman who runs Tai Yong Medical.

When Adam points out that Tai Yong is Sarif's biggest competitor, Van Bruggen explains that Zhao doesn't like competition and resorts to any means necessary to destabilize her opponents. He tells Adam to obtain a keycard for the Tai Yong Tower, where he can find a surveillance recording on their servers. Adam obtains a keycard from a corrupt guard in the Hung Hua Hotel and returns to Van Bruggen, who recodes the card to recognize Adam's biometrics.

Suddenly, Belltower mercs crash through the roof and begin shooting everything in sight. Van Bruggen freaks out and asks Adam to give him a weapon for protection. Adam gives him his sidearm and the hacker flees, before dispatching several Belltower troops himself on the way out.

Adam infiltrates the maintenance tunnels of the Lower City and heads upwards, stopping on the way to help an employee who was trapped by a toxic gas leak. He eventually finds a freight elevator that leads him straight into the Tai Yong Building. While heading up, Pritchard contacts him and says that the surveillance footage is likely stored in the Data Core room, and to head there. Adam heads through the Lee Geng research wing and eventually reaches the data core.

He accesses Van Bruggen's surveillance and sees a startling video - Zhao is discussing the situation in Detroit with Jaron Namir, the leader of the "Tyrants" mercenary band and the man who almost killed Jensen in the attack on the Sarif labs. Zhao says that [[TheReveal Megan and the other Sarif scientists had GPL implants, meaning they'll be tracked]]. Namir counters that [[{{Foreshadowing}} Eliza in Montreal]] took care of the situation.

Adam realizes that the scientists are still alive, and Sarif calls to tell him to remain focused. He suggests finding Zhao in her office at the top of the tower and speaking to her.

Adam heads up to the office, while Pritchard warns him that he could be walking into a trap. Adam says that he's expecting one, and confronts Zhao in her panic room. He asks her where Megan is, and she feigns ignorance. She tells him that the Tyrants are bigger than Sarif and Tai Yong, and reveals that Sarif knows about the GPL implants, and says that Picus Television disabled the implants when the team were kidnapped. Suddenly, she pushes him out of the room and seals it behind him while saying he greatly underestimated her.

Sarif tells him that entire building is on alert and to get to the hangar bay immediately. Adam fights his way through the Belltower soldiers and reaches the bay, where he opens the hangar doors for Malik.

She flies in and picks him up, and he says that their next stop is Montreal...

!Tropes:

* FourOneNineScam: Going through Windmill's computer in Hengsha Court Gardens, which heavily suggests that he's been said scam to install spyware and monitor communications on various consoles throughout the world. This includes communications close to the Illuminati, as he's been able to copy over the conversation of the OmniscientCouncilOfVagueness from the opening cinematic!
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: Like Detroit, Hengsha has a spacious sewer system that's high enough for people to walk around in. This is also justified -- the sewers have signs connecting to various locations, including The Hive, in addition to various walled-over storage rooms that can be broken into, indicating it's used as a form of underground travel.
* ActuallyIAmHim: Tong is posing as the bartender at the Hive, and initially makes Adam believe that he's the one running interference for Tong. Averted if you have the social aug and [[SpottingTheThread point out the inconsistencies in his security detail]].
* AffectionateNickname: Malik's close friends call her "Flygirl", as evidenced by one of the documents found in the pod at the beginning of the "Shanghai Justice" side mission.
* AsianHookerStereotype: A large number of the NPC's in Lower Hengsha are prostitutes, and you begin the mission on the roof of a brothel where one of the hookers hires you to help the fellow workers.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Mei (a hooker in the building Malik drops Adam off at) immediately recognizes that he is either a policeman or soldier (he is both) and that he's in Hengsha on business just after a few seconds of looking at him.
* BadBoss: Zhao is revealed to be this. Not only does she have a HairTriggerTemper against anyone who doubts Tai Yong Medical, but she's nearly homicidal in her disregard for the safety of her workers.
* BallisticDiscount: PlayedWith. Chuanli doesn't have the information regarding the captive Ning's location on him, and if Adam knocks him out, he won't have anything on him revealing the location. However, he can be paid, reveal the information and then the player can knock him out, getting back all the money anyway.
* TheBartender: Bobby and (initially) Tong in the Hive nightclub.
* BigBrotherIsWatching: TYM keeps extremely tight tabs on their employees. They even restrict the number of emails allowed in someone's inbox to four (including the notification email that your email inbox is getting full!) and require any user to submit a request to the database administrator to access archived emails, all to keep track of interoffice communications to catch dissent.
* BilingualBonus: Seen often. The ambient conversations are only heard in Mandarin Chinese (though the corresponding subtitles, if turned on, are in English), and the graffiti and posters are also written this way, albeit poorly.
* BrokenAesop: The 'best' solution to the "Bar Tab" sidequest is to refuse to take the implant from the client, Raya (doing so would functionally kill her), return to Bobby at the Hive and offer to pay off the broker's contract (to the tune of 5,000 credits - a year's worth of payments). The game makes it seem like this is the ultimate act of generosity on Adam's behalf for no reward... until you pay the money and he gives you a Praxis Kit anyway, making it just another way to get an upgrade point. (They cost the same at a LIMB clinic, but each LIMB clinic will only ever sell you two, so this can be a useful way to get an extra one if you need it.)
* BrokenFaceplate: The TYM employee trapped in the gassed room has this, as his clear faceplate broke during the industrial accident. Notably (and unusually for this trope), the employee also has a secondary rebreather that's keeping him alive, though its effectiveness is waning and he needs help immediately.
* ChekhovsGun: The GPL implants (which were referenced in the prologue mission) turn out to be installed in Sarif's kidnapped scientists, which is commented on by Zhao and Namir in the security recording Adam views. This makes him and Sarif realize that the scientists are still alive, having been kidnapped by the mercenaries.
* ChekhovsGunman: If you give him a weapon, Van Bruggen escapes Alice Gardens and contacts Adam much later (on the way to Zhao's apartment), where he gives him 2,000 credits in appreciation.
* CrazyPrepared: Van Bruggen's computer in Hengsha Court Gardens implies that he has a large amount of surveillance on everyone (including a transcript of the ''Illuminati conversation from the prologue''!), as well as a copy of a [[FourOneNineScam scam email]]. It's suggested that he is able to monitor everyone and anyone's communications for his own means.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: The player can break up an argument with a pimp who is pressuring a hooker to get augmentations in order to better satisfy her customers. She later tells him that the girls are "leashed" with augments to make them dependent on neuropozyne and break their will. (This has strong parallels with reality, where prostitutes are often forcibly addicted to heroin or other drugs in order to make them more controllable and less likely to flee.)
* DeathFakedForYou: The Sarif scientists (and Megan) turn out to be NotQuiteDead, as their deaths were faked by Eliza Cassan at Picus in Montreal.
* DestinationDefenestration: Diamond Chan can be thrown off the roof of a building in the Youzhao District, which completes the requisite sidequest.
* DevelopersForesight:
** If the player decides to sneak into the Hive (through the back entrance) before visiting Hengsha Court Gardens for the first time, an alternate cutscene will play where Belltower operative Narhari Khan questions Tong about Van Bruggen's whereabouts.
** An ID card for Tai Yong Medical can also be obtained long before it's used proper (and can be found right near the beginning of the level). Doing so nets some alternate dialogue from Adam and Malik where he points out how far he's thought ahead.
* TheDragon: Narhari Khan (to Zhao Yun Ru), the commander of Belltower's forces in the city. Notably, the player can knock him out ''twice'' in short order, during the Alice Garden Pods attack and soon after in Tai Yong Medical.
* DragonLady: Zhao, who runs Tai Yong Medical.
* DrivenToSuicide: One of the rooms in Hengsha Court Gardens has evidence that its occupants was planning to or went through with their suicide attempt. There's also a pod in the Alice Garden Pods that contains a revolver and a pocket secretary with a declaration of despair.
* EnemyMine: Tong decides to help Adam for little in return. It's revealed afterward that he did so just to make things a lot more difficult for Belltower.
* FemmeFatale: Zhao (also known as "The Dragon Lady"), who is encountered in the Tai Yong building.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Eliza Cassan's news reports mention several events that will become much more important later, including Tai Yong's purchase of a rival augmentation manufacturer (with the implication that the CEO was framed by having millions of dollars deposited in his account) and a "puff piece" interview with Hugh Darrow where he mentions the existence of the "Panchaea Project".
** Hacking enough computers and listening to ambient dialogue from the doctors in TYM reveals that they've been ordered to finalize and ship a mass order of specific biochips to the public, with very few people in the know as to why there's a rush. [[SpottingTheThread One researcher even points out these discrepancies]], and is told to shut up by another researcher.
* HiddenInPlainSight:
** The codes to the storage pods across the street from Alice Gardens are written on graffiti right next to them, with the necessary digits underlined.
** Tong is pretending to be TheBartender so he can ward off interested parties looking for him.
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: Mei gets a fair amount of characterization, and her missions involve sending Adam to protect her fellow "girls" by rescuing one from what amounts to forced slavery, and later, either killing the man responsible for terrorizing the girls or, for the pacifist option, knocking him out and planting drugs in his apartment so Mei can have him arrested and imprisoned.
* HypocriticalHumor: During the "Shanghai Justice" sidequest, when you meet with Anonymous X, he'll rail at how Hengsha has been "taken over" by Western influences who are only looking for money. He then proceeds to (attempt to) charge you 1000 credits for the autopsy report ''after'' he's already given it to you. Adam can call him out on this.
* IdiotBall:
** Adam stands around like an idiot while Zhao pretends to be a DamselInDistress, and he's unceremoniously shoved out of the room while she locks it behind him. This is after the preceding areas, where he has learned that she's amoral, ruthless and powerful, and he should know a lot better. Sarif rightly calls him out on his stupidity afterward. While it's plausible Zhao has a CASIE mod and was using it to influence Jensen's reactions, by this point in the game he quite possibly has the same aug and should really know better than to let her use one on him.
** Anonymous X attempts to shake down Adam for payment ''after'' handing over Evelyn Carmichael's autopsy report. Adam calls him out on this blunder:
--> '''Adam''': A little piece of advice. When attempting to extort money from someone, don't give them what they want ''before'' trying to rip them off.
** Lee Hong himself gets this when he keeps the weapon he used to kill Evelyn (a broken clock) in his apartment. Bad enough to hold on to a murder weapon and have it in plain sight in your bedroom; worse still, the fatal impact with Evelyn's skull damaged the movement as well as the glass, so the clock's stopped hands display the time of the murder.
* TheInformant: Anonymous X, who Adam visits to get information on Evelyn's killer in the "Shanghai Justice" side mission.
* JackBauerInterrogationTechnique:
** A civilian in the basement of The Hive appears to have been suggested to this, as his body is still found sitting in a chair in one of the storage rooms.
** The body of a technician can be found in a hidden vent during the trip through the TYM service tunnels, with a datapad found near him suggesting he was caught and fatally interrogated after it was discovered that he was working with the Harvesters to steal augs from the manufacturer.
* KarmaHoudini: Van Bruggen, if Jensen gives him a weapon; he gets away clean from the Belltower ambush at the Alice Garden Pods, and later shows his appreciation by adding a couple thousand credits to Jensen's bank balance. (If Jensen ''doesn't'' give Van Bruggen a weapon, Belltower catches and kills him.)
* KickTheDog: Belltower's evil nature is almost immediately established when they assault the Alice Garden Pods and kill anyone in their way, regardless of whether they put up a fight or not. [[TheDragon Narhari Khan]] himself executes a confused man for no reason except [[LeaveNoSurvivors leaving no survivors]].
* KingIncognito: Tong poses as the bartender at VIP Lounge in the Hive so he can ward off questions from interested parties looking for him, under the guise that he is in direct contact with Tong. Adam can convince Tong to admit his identity by pointing out that no mere bartender would be so closely attended by so many heavily armed and augmented bodyguards.
* LaserHallway: There are several sets of laser triggers throughout TYM, including the Data Core Room, which has multiple sets of lasers (vertical ''and'' horizontal) sweeping back and forth through the room, requiring the player to either Cloak past or use one of the vents to bypass them.
* LayeredMetropolis: Hengsha itself, which is compromised of two separate cities stacked one on top of the other.
* LeaveNoSurvivors: Even in the event that you've knocked out everyone in the Alice Garden Pods before talking to Van Bruggen, Belltower (who subsequently assaults the complex) murders everyone else to keep their activities secret.
* LoanShark: Bobby at the Hive is one, and enlists Adam's help to collect the money from a broker who bought an augmentation from the Triads to help her business. Once it becomes clear that the girl was forced into a scam, Adam has to deal with Bobby on her behalf.
* LuredIntoATrap: Discussed.
** Adam suggests that Barrett gave him the address for Hengsha Court Gardens in order to draw him into a trap, but Malik tells him to stop being paranoid but not to stick around for long anyway.
** Later, Pritchard tells Adam that he's probably walking into a trap by Zhao, but Adam says that he's expecting one and counting on it.
* NotSoStoic: Zhao's calm, composed demeanor goes right out the door in her emails, with one (written to Narhari Khan) more-or-less begging him to kill Van Bruggen, who's threatening her entire company.
* OffscreenTeleportation: Tong manages to get into his room within seconds of Adam walking away from him at the VIP Lounge, even though there was only one entrance into the room and the player could get there in a few moments.
* RuleOfSymbolism: Zhao's penthouse has the sun lighting up the central room from the large windows on both sides, in a way uncharacteristic of the rest of Hengsha. While it is impossible to have the sun coming from multiple directions, it was added to the environment art to hint that as being on the bleeding edge of transhuman technologies and abusing that position, it was "burning up in the sun" like Icarus.
* SlobsVersusSnobs: The "TYM vs. Sarif Industries" battle in a nutshell. Sarif makes high-end (even experimental) augs, but is forced to fight dirty to stay afloat in an intensely-competitive market. TYM makes cheap, low-end augs, but only got where it did through corporate buyouts and intimidation tactics against rival manufacturers.
* TemptingFate: One of the guards in TYM can be heard commenting about his fear of "death by vending machine", just a few feet away from several machines. There's nothing stopping the player (if they have the "Lift Heavy Objects" aug) from throwing the machines at him.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Tong does this before Adam figures out his identity.
* TheTriadsAndTheTongs: Tong runs Hengsha's local gang, the Harvesters.
* UnexpectedlyRealisticGameplay: Chuanli, the crooked bouncer who demands money in exchange for the location of a missing prostitute during Mei's sidequest. If you refuse to pay, he'll point out that it's pointless to threaten him since, "It's not like I have the info conveniently on me..." If you knock him out or kill him, you'll discover he was telling the truth. In another case of ensuing reality, there's nothing stopping you from paying him, getting the info and THEN knocking him out or killing him to get your money back.
* WhatTheHellHero: Malik gives Adam hell if he tries to use the CASIE mod to influence her at the start of the "Shanghai Justice" sidequest.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Zhao, during her (frantic) attempt to get to her panic room. She begins ranting and crying that "Eliza" and "Picus" forced her to do all her evil actions, just so she can move close enough to a button to close the panic room door.
