->'''Pembroke''': Hey, should we take odds on how fast I'll solve this case?\
'''Peralta''': Nope.\
'''Pembroke''': I mean, what was it with Diaz's last "impossible" extortion case? What was it? Six hours?\
'''Diaz''': That's because it was 98% solved.\
'''Pembroke''': The last 2%'s the hardest to get. That's why they leave it in the milk.\
'''Peralta''': What?

'''The Vulture''' is the fifth episode of ''Brooklyn Nine Nine''.

Det. Warren Pembroke of Major Crimes is known as "the Vulture" for a reason -- he takes over cases that are nearly-solved and takes the credit for himself. When he takes over one of Jake's cases, he recruits the entire team to help him get revenge -- eventually deciding on out-Vulturing the Vulture by solving the case before he does.

Meanwhile, Holt and Gina attempt to help Terry get over his fear of shooting guns in order to get him recertified.

This episode premiered on October 15, 2013.

!!This episode provides examples of:

* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: The team's ideas on how to get revenge start from "steal his kidney, burn down his house, replace his aloe tissues with regular tissues..."
* BatmanGambit: Holt and Gina take Jeffords to a gun range with the intent of annoying him into emptying a mag into a target, thus tricking him into getting recertified as a marksman. It would have worked had Gina not [[{{Pun}} jumped the gun.]]
* CentipedesDilemma: Frustrated at Gina, Terry takes the gun from her and shoots seven shots, no problem. But when he actually has to shoot the last shot needed to get recertified, he flips out and doesn't remember how it's done.
-->'''Jeffords''': ''Guys!'' I forgot how to breathe! Is it two-in one-out?
* DumpsterDive: Boyle takes a dip into the trash chute and dumpster in an attempt to find the murder weapon.
-->'''Boyle''': ''(holds up corkscrew)'' This is the proudest moment of my career... ''([[ButtMonkey gets hit in the head by a garbage bag]])''
* EurekaMoment: Santiago has one when she sees the fridge and realizes that the reason nobody could find the murder weapon was because it was ''magnetic'' -- it was stuck halfway down the trash chute.
* FoeRomanceSubtext: Rosa apparently finds the Vulture hot. It's heavily implied that they hooked up prior to the episode, as she knows exactly where she lives. That said, the Vulture makes unwelcome passes at Amy and likes to focus on Jake's ass.
-->'''Rosa''': ''What?'' You can find someone hot and hate them at the same time.
* HandsOnApproach: Gina attempts to invoke this by telling Terry to wrap his "thick, muscular arms around [her]."
* HomoeroticSubtext: The Vulture seems really fixated on Jake's "big white ass."
* InSeriesNickname: "The Vulture," for reasons explained above.
* IneffectualLoner: This trait of Jake's is amped up in this episode -- had he asked everybody to help him out sooner, the Vulture wouldn't need to get involved.
* {{Jerkass}}:
** The Vulture is a pretty big tool, constantly insulting the 99, making sleazy remarks to Amy and he grabs Jake's ass.
** Gina is extremely creepy towards Terry, making a ton of unwanted sexual advances.
* JerkassHasAPoint: The Vulture's a dick, but he's entirely justified in his anger over the squad's actions once the crime scene has been transferred to his jurisdiction and responsibility.
* JurisdictionFriction: The Vulture of Major Crimes does ''not'' get along with the squad.
* NervousWreck: Terry turns into this.
-->'''Holt''': Still waiting, sergeant.\
'''Jeffords''': It's just... the target looks exactly like a friend of mine. It's freaking me out.\
'''Holt''': You have a friend... who's just a silhouette?\
'''Terry''': Yes!
* PokeThePoodle: Carrying on from ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: "... leave a dead cat in his cedar closet. Note: he would have to own a cedar closet.[...] Sneak into his apartment and burn popcorn in the microwave..." They eventually decide on wrapping his motorcycle in plastic wrap and melt it with a hairdryer before deciding to solve the case before him.
* SelfDeprecation: Gina claims she wants to learn how to shoot because the cops in her area are useless...except she lives in the 99's area. She probably wasn't telling the truth, though, as the real reason she was there was to act as an official witness so that Jeffords could carry a gun again.
* ShoutOut:
** In order to delay getting his weapons recertification, Jeffords ends up summarising the plot of ''Film/TopGun'' for Holt and Gina.
** When getting the files to Jake's case, the Vulture claims that Jake did all the "super-easy work, you know, the real Franchise/NancyDrew level stuff."
-->'''Jake:''' Oh, yeah? Did Nancy Drew solve a lot of murders?
-->'''Charles:''' Yeah, she did... ''Murder on Ice'', ''Recipe for Murder.'' Nancy was a wonderful detective. I wanted to be her when I grew up.
-->'''Jake:''' Thanks, Charles. That's helpful.
* {{Squick}}: Everyone's InUniverse reactions to Boyle revealing he slept with a 68-year-old in his twenties.
* StealingTheCredit: The Vulture, sometimes as the cuffs are going on.
* TerribleIntervieweesMontage: [[Recap/BrooklynNineNineS1E01Pilot Once again]], door duty is presented as useless and unhelpful.
* TilMurderDoUsPart: Another "wife-murders-husband-for-cheating" scenario.
* TooMuchInformation: Once the confusion is cleared up, Boyle gets rather enthusiastic about listing the benefits of sleeping with a 68-year-old.
* VanityLicensePlate: The Vulture's reads: 'COLOGNEME'
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: At one point, Scully goes off to buy a hairdryer in order to help prank the Vulture and isn't seen for the rest of the episode.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Terry rightly calls everybody out on messing with the crime scene without jurisdiction, as it means Holt is getting heat for something that isn't his fault.
-->'''Jeffords''': [[TeamDad I was too busy worrying about my real kids that I forgot about my stupid grown-up kids!]]
** He also calls out Holt for trying to trick him into taking his weapons recertification, although Holt justifies it by pointing out that Terry is too good a police officer to be sidelined with a desk job.
