2In this book, we discover the origins of various Order members and just what they were doing before they decided to join together and become the Order of the Stick.

4!!Summary
5
6'''Note: For the sake of a more coherent summary, events are protrayed in chronological order, not as how they were in the book.'''
7
817 years ago, dwarven Thor cleric Durkon Thundershield is told by the High Priest Hurak that he has been chosen to act as a liason between dwarves and other races and to go learn their ways- right now. And to never return until called for. After Durkon is forcibly thrown out of Dwarven Lands, Hurak reveals to the Temple Brewmaster Firuk Blackore that the real reason is that Odin has foretold that Durkon will bring "death and destruction" the next time he returns home. By sending him out on an endless mission, Hurak hopes to stop the prophecy. Meanwhile, Durkon's first day in human lands go badly; no one will listen to what he has to say, and their finest beer doesn't meet dwarf standards.
9
107 years ago at fighter college Bash University, Roy Greenhilt is approached by his [[ProdigalFamily estranged father]] Eugene and told about the latter's Blood Oath of Vengeance against the sorcerer Xykon. However, Eugene doesn't think Roy can do it, and wanted Roy to pass it along to his younger sister Julia when she becomes old enough. Incensed by Eugene's lack of faith, Roy decides to fulfill the Oath to show him up.
11
124 years ago, Roy graduates and joins an adventuring party, which includes the now-sullen Durkon. During a mission to deal with some orcs, Roy finds a peaceful solution, which impresses Durkon. The two decide to form their own party and pursue Xykon on their own...
13
148 months ago, rogue for the Greysky City Thieves Guild Haley Starshine learns that her father is being held for ransom in the country of Tyrinaria. Knowing she won't be able to raise the money while paying guild rates, Haley quits the Thieves Guild. To avoid being killed by her former boss Bozzok, Haley leaves Greysky.
15
163 weeks ago, Elan the bard stupidly checks his knight Sir Francois into an inn run by thieves. The next morning, all of their valuables are gone. Fed up with Elan's stupidity, Sir Francois ditches the bard.
17
184 Days ago, the halfling ranger Belkar Bitterleaf is imprisoned for murdering several people in a bar fight. He manages to escape when an explosion from the Mage's guild next door damages the jail. The explosion was caused by the elf wizard Vaarsuvius, who was attempting to win the Iron Mage competition and miswrote their spell. While at a bar, V meets Haley, who advises the elf to become an adventurer and rake in XP that way.
19
20The day before yesterday, Roy and Durkon enter town, having finally gotten a lead on Xykon's whereabouts. They decide that they will need help penetrating the sorcerer's defenses and split up to recruit new party members. Initially having no success, Roy meets Elan, who shows him how to recruit adventurers; Being a mysterious stranger and getting a table at an inn. To Roy's amazement, a line of prospects queue up at his table. Although most decline his terms, Roy is able to hire Haley, Vaarsuvius and Belkar. As thanks for helping him, Roy also hires Elan, whose childish and energetic celebration gives Roy pause, but not enough to retract the offer. When Roy and Durkon reunite, Durkon decides that to trust the fighter's judgement and sends away the prospects he found, a pair of celestials who stormed the gates of Heaven.
21
22Yesterday, the group leaves town. Xykon is supposed to be in a castle in the Redmountain Hills, and local villages have been recently attacked by goblins. Roy hopes that following the goblins' trail will lead them to Xykon. Elan suggests that their group needs a name, and inane ideas are tossed back and forth. Frustrated, Roy sarcastically suggests they call themselves the Order of the Stick because there happens to be a stick nearby. Much to his consternation, the others like the idea and adopt it.
23
24A random encounter with some kobolds ensues, and the readied actions of Belkar, Elan, Haley and Vaarsuvius leads to them attacking each other. Luckily, the kobolds died from laughing so much. After Haley finagles her way into being second-in-command for a much higher pay, Roy is ready to give up and disband the Order, citing their various dysfunctions. Durkon encourages Roy to give the others a chance, noting that he used to be surly and unpleasant before meeting Roy. When Roy is unconvinced, Durkon then suggests they leave Xykon's destruction up to a powerful wizard, like Eugene wanted. Citing the idea as a low blow, Roy nonetheless agrees to keep the others, and the Order of the Stick head into the Redmountain Hills...

26!!Tropes
27* ButHeSoundsHandsome: A disguised Belkar tells guards that the amazingly handsome halfling who broke out ran in the other direction.
28* CallForward: Many of the jokes in the story, of course. The biggest two plot-relevant examples however are Haley getting the ransom note for her father (which was first seen in [[http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0131.html #131]]) and the reason Durkon was exiled from his home.
29* CantArgueWithElves: V's constant response "And the problem with that would be?" to Haley explaining the limitations of elves earns them a DopeSlap from Haley.
30-->'''Haley:''' Sneak attack to the face!
31* ComedicSociopathy: Belkar, as usual. When Belkar expresses a desire to kill Haley and Elan for accidentally attacking him in the Epic Fail below, Roy points out how [[AppealToForce Varsuuvius, Durkon and Roy would make quick work of him.]] Belkar quickly agrees that his idea isn't smart.
32-->'''Belkar:''' ''(thinking)'' [[ComicallyMissingThePoint If I'm going to attack my allies, I should delay until the END of the initiative order, when they'll all be tied up in melee.]]
33* CostumeTestMontage: Elan puts Roy through one of these to make him look like a mysterious stranger.
34* DeliberatelyMonochrome: The story is not in color because Rich Berlew wanted to evoke the idea this is a prequel. And it's cheaper to make.
35* DeliciousDistraction: Haley is able to sneak past an AngryGuardDog this way. It helps that the steaks she brings are laced with sleeping potion. And that she has one for [[MultipleHeadCase each of its heads]].
36* DieLaughing: Durkon comments that the kobolds did this after the group's EpicFail.
37* EasyExp: V complains about the fact that killing a few kobolds somehow grants more experience than decades of magic study.
38* EpicFail:
39** While in an ''Series/IronChef'' like magic contest, Vaarsuvius miswrites a spell. The result destroys the entire wizard's guild ''and'' a part of the jail next door... allowing Belkar to bust out.
40** The Order's first battle against a group of kobolds ends in disaster. Belkar prepares to charge the first kobold that gets within 30ft of him, Elan prepares to flank the first [[ExactWords creature]] that takes damage, Vaarsuvius prepares to hit the first four creatures in front of them with Lightning Bolt and Haley prepares to move ahead and shoot the first creature that charges. Belkar charges and misses, resulting in Haley shooting him. Elan then flanks Belkar and stabs him with his rapier. The three of them plus the kobold are hit by Vaarsuvius' Lightning Bolt. This is an example of PoorCommunicationKills since none of them vocalized what they were planning.
41* EverythingIsRacist: Belkar accuses the guard and medium-sized humanoids in general of looking down on small-sized people, citing things such as game mechanics and separate drinking fountains. The guard points out that small sized people can't reach the larger fountains.
42* {{Fanservice}}: Lampshaded, as Haley complains Bozzok's summons are ruining her fanservice moment (bathing nude in a heated tub.)
43-->'''Haley:''' Darn it! Who's interrupting my gratuitous bath scene? ''(later)'' Geez, you try to squeeze some fan service in...
44* GetOut: The High Priest of Thor to Durkon. And he doesn't mean after an hour to arrange his departure. He means '''''right now'''''.
45* GettingTheBoot:
46** Right after the High Priest of Thor tells Durkon that he needs to leave '''now''', the next panel is of Durkon being forcibly tossed outside by a pair of guards.
47** Similarly, Vaarsuvius was kicked out of their master Aarindarius' tower because V had become too isolated from the world. The panel shows Aarindarius forcing V out with magic.
48-->'''Aarindarius:''' Bixby's Evicting Hand!
49* HeroLookingForGroup: The book explores the backstories of the members of the Order of the Stick, and how Roy Greenhilt wound up assembling them into an [[RagtagBunchOfMisfits adventuring party]] to defeat sorcerer Xykon, whom his father has sworn a Blood Oath of Vengeance.
50* HomoeroticSubtext: When Gronk the orc tells Roy he "will do anything" for a backstage pass at the Iron Golems concert and winks at him, Roy is less than pleased.
51* IResembleThatRemark: When Roy claims that Arcane casters are flawed by their faith in their magic, his father Eugene (A wizard) immediately retorts that Arcane Magic is all-powerful and completely flawless.
52* ALadyOnEachArm: Belkar, when he finds the local prostitutes are having a 2-for-1 sale.
53* LiteralMetaphor: The Iron Golems are a HeavyMetal band who are... [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin iron golems]], and are definitely made of metal and are gigantic and heavy.
54* MercyLead: Hank warns Haley that Bozzok will her an hour at most before sending Crystal out to kill her, as "thanks" for Haley's past work in the Thieves' Guild.
55* MonochromePast: To give the book a "flashback" feel. And be cheaper to print...
56* MySisterIsOffLimits: The very first lines is the standard "I didn't know she was your sister!" dialogue between two guards.
57* MysteriousStranger: Elan has Roy dress up as one and tells him to set in a bar booth. Roy thinks it's silly -- and realizes a long line of adventurers have ''lined up'' to talk to him.
58* NeverBringAKnifeToAFistFight: We first see Belkar in jail, on a charge of murdering several people in a bar brawl. He tries to defend himself saying that they shouldn't have brought fists to a knife fight, but the guard retorts that it wasn't a knife fight until Belkar started stabbing people.
59* NominalImportance: Deconstructed in the preface written by Redcloak:
60-->I should also mention that as far as [=NPCs=] go, I'm one of the lucky ones. I've had a name since OOTS #95, which is more than I can say for most. Before that, I was just another goblin in a long time of disposable goblins. For a moment, imagine the inconvenience of going through life as Goblin #341. You can't vote, you can't get a driver's license, and your letters are always ending up in Goblin #314's mailbox, which is awkward because you used to date his cousin, Goblin #734, but it didn't work out because she needed to "[[JustFriends find out who she really is]]", whatever that means.
61* OhNoNotAgain: Elan's reaction when the knight he accompanies decides to ditch him.
62* PaperThinDisguise: Belkar uses the beard of a guard he just killed to craft a fake-mustache in order to sneak out of jail.
63* PunnyName: ''[=On the Origin of PCs=]'' to ''[[UsefulNotes/CharlesDarwin On the Origin of Species]]''.
64-->'''Redcloak:''' [[{{Pun}} Say it out loud if you don't get the "joke",]] [[SelfDeprecation though I use that term loosely. Dreadful.]]
65* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: How the Order starts out. They get better in the main story.
66* ResignationsNotAccepted: Hank tells Haley that Bozzok was only being polite when she told him she had to quit the Guild, and that he's going to have her assassinated with Crystal.
67* RPGMechanicsVerse: As usual for ''The Order of the Stick'', but invoked most directly when Haley convinces Vaarsuvius to go adventuring to gain levels fast. V bitterly mutters that apparently decades of magic study is less effective than killing kobolds.
68* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Roy recruits Vaarsuvius by using this deliberately.
69-->'''Vaarsuvius:''' Bah!! You are clearly only hiring me because I intimidated you intellectually, to the point where your masculine pride requires you to establish your dominance over my superior mind.\
70'''Roy:''' Maybe. Or maybe I'm hiring you because I require the creation of a managed spherical energy release with a thermal signature no less than 1850° Kelvin, which can be manifested at specific X, Y, and Z coordinates from verbal cues. I require this specific temperature because it is the minimum level at which necrotized epidermis has been proven to combust and I have reason to believe that my mission will require the incapacitation of multiple post-organic hostiles.\
71'''Vaarsuvius:''' So... [[LaymansTerms you need Fireball spells to toast the undead you expect to fight]]? \
72'''Roy:''' Did I stutter?\
73'''Vaarsuvius:''' ... A pleasure to serve under you, sir.
74* SnipeHunt:
75** At the beginning of Durkon's story, the High Priest of Thor, Hurak, sends into human lands to act as a liaison and not return until called for. Not long after Durkon is tossed out, Hurak confesses to the Temple Brewmaster Firuk that Durkon has been prophesied by Odin's priest that the young dwarf will bring death and destruction the next time he returns to home, and sent him on an endless mission in hopes of averting a ProphecyTwist. Firuk points out that it may be a SelfFulfillingProphecy, and is ultimately proven right decades later.[[note]]It's later shown that had the priest ''asked'' Durkon to leave forever, [[ForWantOfANail he'd have never been a part of The Order]], and certain events would have gone unopposed and things would have been ''worse'', so it's not ''quite'' a Self Fulfilling Prophecy.[[/note]]
76** Sir Francois gets rid of Elan by telling him to count with his eyes closed and hightailing it out of there while Elan's distracted. [[OhNoNotAgain Elan's reaction]] indicates [[TheLoad this isn't the first time it happened to him]].
77* TalkingIsAFreeAction: Averted in the Iron Mage contest, where Vaarsuvius' SesquipedalianLoquaciousness costs them most of their prep time.
78* ATankardOfMooseUrine: The TropeNamer. This is Durkon's reaction to a taste of "the finest beer in human lands". The implications [[BigNo do not sit well with him.]]
79* TaxmanTakesTheWinnings: Haley steals a diamond worth 20,000gp. Bozzok's fees reduces her take to double digits.
80* TerribleIntervieweesMontage: Inverted; Roy will take anyone, but almost no one is interested in his terms.
81* TicketLineCampOut: Roy's first mission as an adventurer is helping a town deal with a band of orcs. In the battle, he learns that the orcs aren't raiders, but camping out for concert tickets. The town just overreacted. The concert they're waiting for isn't due for a few more weeks, but the orcs are that determined to get good seats. "Mezzanine seats are sign of weakness."
82* ToBeLawfulOrGood: Roy refuses to murder orcs who are just camping for concert tickets, instead arranging a deal to bring them snacks from town while they're waiting. Roy's teammates point out that they could have killed them for XP and not have an alignment shift. Roy shoots this down, annoying them but pleasing Durkon.
83* TheUnreveal: Eugene's story on how he began his Blood Oath against Xykon is skipped over, as it's covered in the main comic.
84* UriahGambit: Shockingly employed by adventurers who are supposed to be non-Evil aligned, in that they send Durkon on deliberately dangerous missions because they wouldn't mind if he got killed. Roy, who is Lawful Good himself, is disgusted by their actions. He tries to inform Durkon of their actions, but Durkon already knows and goes along with it, thinking HumansAreBastards anyway. Roy's behavior changes his mind.
85* WantedPoster: Haley gives hers to Roy as her résumé.
86* WantsAPrizeForBasicDecency: Belkar says he didn't kill everyone in the bar. The guard retorts they didn't want ''anyone'' killed. Belkar replies that's just silly.
87* YouAllMeetInAnInn: Naturally. In fact, Elan tells Roy flat out this is how adventurers meet for some reason.
88----
89->'''Vaarsuvius:''' [[TheStinger This unnecessary and self-absorbed wallowing in the past has now drawn to a close, and without any unwelcome haste.]]
