* The infamous '''[[GameOver GAME OVER RETURN OF GANON]]''' screen, as seen to the right, accompanied by Ganon's mocking laughter. ''[[https://tcrf.net/images/4/41/NES_Zelda_II_laugh.ogg Ha hah hah hah hah...]]''
** The implications of [[https://youtu.be/4GxARm_QiCo this screen]] are horrifying to comprehend as well; Ganon getting revived [[JokerImmunity is a common occurance at this point]], but this is ''by far'' the worst-case scenario. Why? Even before getting revived, [[TheBadGuyWins Ganon has already completely and utterly won]]. The four big factors that are usually capable of either destroying, resealing or otherwise fighting off Ganon -- Link, Zelda, the Master Sword/Silver Arrows, and the sages -- are dead, in a permanent coma, missing without a trace, and nowhere to be seen, respectively. In particular, now that [[TheHeroDies Link has been killed]] and [[BloodMagic his blood taken from his remains and used]] to resurrect the Great King of Evil, ''there truly is '''nothing and no one''' that can stop Ganon now''.
** The Game Over screen is potentially even worse for some in the [[https://youtu.be/pXSOM0gQDHM Famicom version.]] Ganon's familiar silhouette is gone; [[NothingIsScarier replaced by a lonely black screen]] with text reading "'''RETURN OF [[RougeAnglesOfSatin GANNON]]. THE END.'''", which is accompanied by Ganon's ''[[HellIsThatNoise incredibly]]'' [[HellIsThatNoise ear-wrecking]] [[https://tcrf.net/images/b/b1/FDS_Zelda_II_roar.ogg roar.]] Just like the above, it isn't hard to imagine what horrific fate now awaits Hyrule and its people.
* Falling into water or lava is unsettling. Link immediately begins sinking as if being pulled in until you can't see him anymore. Then the screen flashes as per the usual death animation, but Link's silhouette is suddenly visible again at the very bottom of the screen, like where he has fallen is now his tomb.
* In the Famicom version of the game, Mazura/Horsehead and Barba/Volvagia roar constantly throughout their fights, which isn't unlike the bosses from the [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaI first game]]. ''Unlike'' that game, however, the roar the two bosses use is that [[HellIsThatNoise godawful noise]] heard on the Game Over screen. You thought hearing that noise ''once'' was bad? Now it's on ''repeat'' until you kill the boss. [[NightmareRetardent Though for some it can come across as more annoying than scary.]]
* The town of Old Kasuto provides quite an unpleasant shock the first time you enter it. You suspect something's wrong with the place when you see that the town is seemingly deserted, the sky is unusually dark, most buildings are decrepit and partially collapsed, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking the "indoors" music is playing outside]]. But then you KNOW something's wrong ''when you suddenly start getting hurt for no reason''. [[note]]You're actually getting swarmed by powerful Moas that you can't see without the Cross artifact.[[/note]]
* [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100209235549/zelda/images/3/3d/Thunderbird.png This]] image of Thunderbird about to attack Link, complete with a [[SlasherSmile savagely-grinning]] NightmareFace.
* [[EvilTwin Link's Shadow]] is pretty creepy if you're not expecting it. It's also a very hard fight unless you exploit his AI[[note]]which is exclusive to the NES, by the way, so God help you if you're playing on the Famicom[[/note]], and without context to the fight you can interpret it as a part of Link that ''wants'' Ganon revived.
* Yuu Mishozaki's manga has an interesting way to interpret Link's Shadow, who has a NightmareFace. Throughout the story, while Link and Zelda are heading to the Palaces, Link's Shadow is going around Hyrule sullying Link's reputation, corrupting the White Sword into a Dark Sword, until it is finally revealed that the phantom is really a resurrected Ganon. Link eventually goes into the Great Palace in the hopes of awakening Zelda I, and fights Ganon one last time, who sheds his Link's Shadow form, transforming into his original kaiju-sized form from the previous manga.
* Ever gone to the Tantari Desert cave [[BlackoutBasement without the candle?]] Or the tunnel south of Ruto Town? The [[BattleBoomerang Goriyas]] there are masters of the NothingIsScarier effect on inexperienced players. A short distance before entering a battle against one, a single and slowly-timed boomerang sound can be heard -- as if they're making a single menacing swing with them -- to leave any intruder foolish enough to venture in there early completely thrown off their game, before running out of there. The lack of light is necessary for this.
