4* ''Literature/TheManWhoWasHeavilyIntoRevenge'', for starters. There's a special level of human fear to the concept that the "entire universe" hates you (including animals and in-animated objects), and no one will help, to the point that you want to do yourself in. How did it all start? Someone simply wished it, because you done them wrong, but at the end of the story it implies that, that person who wished it will befall the same exact fate, as it travels in a rather malicious cycle .. as justified as that sounds though.
5* ''Literature/PullingHardTime'' has them all beat. A normal guy sees his wife get raped and murdered (which is bad enough) and goes all ''Film/ISpitOnYourGrave'' on the killer. He's then convicted of murder and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a ''Matrix'' style tank, reliving the worst memory of his life over and over. In this guy's case, it means being an 8 year old, pinned in a car crash, watching his mother's body rot. Truly horrific.
6* ''Literature/{{Paingod}}'': At the end of a life full of tragedy and bad luck, a man discovers this was his vacation. He is an alien, sent to Earth to experience ''happiness'', and despite the sorrow of his Earthly existence, everywhere else in the universe is ''so much worse''.
7* ''Literature/InTheBarn'', his short story with Piers Anthony, which has a world where women are being milked as cattle after other mammals go extinct. The ending shows babies being raised to deliberately render them animal-like by restricting the thumb, cutting the tongue and preventing stimulation.
