"'''Hips Don't Lie'''" is a single by {{UsefulNotes/Colombia}}n artist Music/{{Shakira}}. It is based in salsa and cumbia and was released in 2006 as the third track of the reissue of ''Oral Fixation Vol. 2 (2005)''.

It [[{{Sampling}} samples]] both Wyclef Jean's 2004 song "Dance Like This" and Jerry Rivera's "Amores Como El Nuestro" with borrowed lyrics from the former originally adapted from Luis Dias' "Carnaval (Baile en la Calle)". Many of the song's lyrics are, however, original and written by Shakira.

"Hips Don't Lie" was for a decade ('06-'16[[note]]Though it was still selling about a million copies a year after this[[/note]]) the world's best-selling single of the 21st Century and is at least popularly renowned as the world's biggest pop song ever, certainly for the 2000s and 2010s. The music video, released in 2006, was shared on Website/YouTube and held the top spot of most-viewed video until around February 2007. The song also reached the number #1 spot in over 25 countries, [[UsefulNotes/TheUnitedStates the United States of America]] included, breaking the record for the most radio plays in a single week and being both Shakira's first US and UK Number 1 (pub quiz question: its status as UK Number One meant that it was the last song ever to be played on ''Series/TopOfThePops''). It has won the People's Choice Award as well as the Creator/{{MTV}} Latin American Music Video Award and the MTV Music Video Award in the same year.

It is considered a World song and is Latin Dance and Pop Latino in genre; it has been named the 8th top party song of all time. In the UK it broke the record for most weeks at number 1 during a second run: it spent only one week at the top spot but then returned again for a four-week run two months after its initial chart-topping before Music/{{Beyonce}} knocked it off. This record has never been broken and is currently shared with Music/{{Gotye}} ("Somebody That I Used To Know"). It stayed in the charts for a whole year.

[[UsefulNotes/TheWorldCup The FIFA World Cup]] 2006 anthem was a remix of this song, "Hips Don't Lie (Bamboo)", performed by Shakira at the closing ceremony. It is the fourth most popular World Cup anthem after 2010's "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)", also by Shakira; 2014's "Dare (La La La)", yet another Shakira hit; and "We Are One (Ola Ola)" by Music/{{Pitbull}}, again from 2014.

If you needed an update on just how popular the song and music video remains, it was the most tweeted about song and video in the week beginning 1st September 2014 -- nearly a decade after it was released -- beating out fierce contenders such as Music/TaylorSwift with "Shake It Off". It was also included in the popular game ''[[VideoGame/JustDance Just Dance 2017]]'', over a decade after release.

Like many of her songs, Shakira wrote and released a [[UsefulNotes/SpanishLanguage Spanish]] version, this one called "Será, Será (Las Caderas No Mienten)"[[note]]Also sometimes called simply "(Mis) Caderas No Mienten" - (my) hips [they] don't lie - for some reason[[/note]].

!!Tropes related to Hips Don't Lie are:
* UsefulNotes/BellyDancing: Shakira's [[TitleDrop hips don't lie]].
* BerserkButton: According to ''Series/UglyBetty'' Shakira does not like people greeting her with "Hips Don't Lie".
* BilingualBonus:
** There was a Spanish version, but there is also a lot of Spanish in the English one, too.
** There is [[KeepItForeign French and Haitian Creole in the Spanish version]].
* BookEnds: Starts and ends with "No fighting".
%%* TheCameo: [[Music/TheFugees Wyclef Jean]].
%%* ChangingClothesIsAFreeAction: Well, they're only small outfits.
%%* CostumePorn
* CreatorProvincialism: "Mira en Barranquilla se baila así", "We're just Colombians and Haitans", "Señorita, feel the conga, let me see you move like you come from Colombia", the video resembles the Barranquilla Carnaval.
%%* DancingIsSeriousBusiness
* EverythingsBetterWithSparkles: Wears a nude-and-sequin outfit during the intro.
%%* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin
* FightFurYourRightToParty: One of the dancers in the bullring is dressed in an animal costume.

* InDaClub: Video of 2006, but a club of TheNineties.
* MsFanservice: Several shots in the music video show Shakira in various two-pieces.
* {{Mummy}}: In the music video there is a kid dressed as one behind Wyclef Jean. Sort-of bobbing-dancing like it needs the toilet.
* NudeColoredClothes: The first outfit makes Shakira appear to have sequins stuck on her body.
%%* PlayingWithFire: See [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hipsdontliecover_4154.jpg image]] above.
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: Shakira is barefoot in the music video, as usual.
* RockMeAmadeus: Uses a trumpet part from ''Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)'' by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz.
** The trumpet part is supposedly Rivera's, as he threw a fit when he heard the opening, yet said he wouldn't press charges. Rivera is named in the insert, which also includes permissions for the appropriate parts of the song.
* ShoutOut: In ''Bamboo'' to two legendary ([[TakeThat though not necessarily for the right reasons]]) [[UsefulNotes/AssociationFootball footie players]]; Pelé and Maradona.
** They're both [[BananaRepublic South American]], like Shakira, too - ignoring the fact that there're other footballers out there as a slight hint of CreatorProvincialism--although to be fair, almost everyone agrees that Pelé is the greatest ever, and those who don't agree are Argentines who thing Pelé is the second-greatest and Maradona is the greatest.
* SingerNamedrop: "Shakira, Shakira!" ''and'' Music/TheFugees.
** ''Será, Será'' opens with "Wyclef y Shakira!"
* TalkyBookends: "No fighting; Shakira, Shakira!"
* ThreeMinutesOfWrithing: [[DudeWheresMyRespect Be worshiped]] if your body does [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUT5rEU6pqM this]].
* TitleDrop: ''"...my hips don't lie"'' is in it. A lot.
** In the Spanish version ''"será, será"'' is in it a fair bit, but ''"mis caderas no mienten"'' - '' 'my hips don't lie' '' - is barely mentioned.
** The World Cup anthem yells ''"Bamboh-oh-oh-oh!"'' about as many times.
** But [[JustifiedTrope justified]] in that, yes, with songs a TitleDrop is usually ''inevitable''. [[DontExplainTheJoke See what I did there?]]
* WhiteMaskOfDoom: The video seems a lot like a [[HalloweenEpisode Hallowe'en party]]. [[ForHalloweenIAmGoingAsMyself With belly dancing]]. (Or the Barranquilla Carnaval, as they're marimondas.)
