Derek Ryan Smith (born March 10, 1987), better-known known as '''MOD SUN''', is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and rapper from Bloomington, Minnesota.

Having initially gotten into music in TheNoughties as a member of various PopPunk and PostHardcore bands, he began a solo career in 2009, primarily as a rapper blending AlternativeHipHop and RapRock, releasing a series of mixtapes throughout the first half of TheNewTens before being signed to Rostrum Records (the former label of Music/MacMiller) and releasing his debut album ''Look Up'' in 2015.

In TheNewTwenties, he shifted his solo career back towards PopPunk, as his frequent collaborator Music/MachineGunKelly had done to significant commercial success in 2020, releasing his fourth album, ''Internet Killed The Rockstar'' in 2021.

Outside of music, he's also notable for his relationships with Creator/BellaThorne and Creator/TanaMongeau between 2018 and 2020 (initially a [[{{Main/Polyamory}} polyamorous relationship]] with both of them, before dating Thorne and then Mongeau monogamously). From 2021 to 2023, he was in a relationship with Music/AvrilLavigne, with the couple getting engaged in April 2022 before breaking things off in February 2023.
