The LoveInterest has noted something odd about her partner. He is gone at all hours, does strange things and never answers a straight question. Is he betraying her?

Never fear! Your love interest still has UndyingLoyalty toward you and would never do such a thing. No, it is something else. Rather he is a great patriot bravely defending his country against TheEmpire. She, of course, can't be told about this because she has no need to know. So she must wonder.

Not necessarily a married couple, of course. Subtrope of MistakenForCheating.

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* ''Manga/SPYxFamily'' plays the trope both ways. Superspy code name "Twilight" is currently on assignment under the name Loid Forger with a fake family; he managed to convince his fake wife, Yor, to participate without informing her about his true nature or his mission. He is often worried about her discovering the truth. Yor, on the other hand, is constantly worried about ''him'' realizing that she is actually the assassin codenamed "Thorn Princess". Both are actually completely oblivious to the other's secrets. Anya, their psychic adoptive daughter, knows everything that is going on and often does what she can to help them out without them noticing, partly because she cares for her new parents and partly because she's just as entertained by the whole situation as the audience is.

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/OversaturatedWorld'': From ''[[https://www.fimfiction.net/story/323071/250/group-precipitation/scratching-at-the-wrapper-by-fome Scratching at the Wrapper, by FoME]]'': Lyra being suspicious of Bonbon's out-of-place martial arts skills. They're not married, but they're close. And then there's Bonbon's discussion with her parents, where her dad is basically confirmed as having previously worked as a spy:
--> At dinner that night, Bonbon bit her lip and said, "Dad?"\
Bon Mot looked up from his spaghetti. "Yes, Sweetie?"\
"Did... did Mom ever, you know... ''suspect''?"\
Her mother, Aspartame, snorted. "Believe me, Sweetie, if I had ever suspected what he was up to before it was too late, I would... Well, things would've gone differently."

[[folder:Films -- Animated]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles'': Mrs. Incredible gets suspicious when she finds a mended tear in her husband's old costume (and in the outtakes, what she thinks is AffairHair on his suit).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* In the martial arts-period movie ''Film/ButterflyAndSword'', the hero Sing-wan is an assassin whose fiancee, Butterfly, is suspicious of his real job (he claims himself to be a fisherman, but his skills with a sword proves otherwise). [[spoiler:She finds out the truth in the finale, but it doesn't matter anyways since he just saved her life]].
* The plot of ''Film/TrueLies'' is an [[InvertedTrope inverted]] example. Spy and counter-terrorist agent Harry Tasker thinks his wife Helen is cheating on him, though she doesn't seem to suspect him of anything other than being a boring salesman. [[spoiler:She is sort-of seeing a guy, who claims to be a spy but is, in fact, a car salesman]].
* In ''Film/HeadOverHeels2001'', Amanda and her friends are suspicious of Amanda's new boyfriend Jim. When they investigate, the evidence leads them to believe that he is a violent criminal. He's actually an undercover officer.
* Justified in ''[[Film/TheAssignment1997 The Assignment]]'' (1997). An American naval officer who happens to be the {{doppelganger}} of Carlos the Jackal is used for an intelligence operation where he must pose as Carlos well enough to fool a girlfriend of the notorious terrorist. This includes instruction from an ex-lover of Carlos in how he has sex. The officer's wife accuses him of cheating because he's [[BecomingTheMask suddenly changed his personal habits]] and [[NotRightInTheBed sexual technique]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jokes]]
* Old Russian joke inversion: "If your wife has cheated on you, be thankful she betrayed you, not the Motherland."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* ''Literature/TheScarletPimpernel'' makes this OlderThanRadio.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* In the ''Series/{{NCIS}}'' episode "Power Down," a young man discovers that his recently murdered wife, who he momentarily thought was cheating, was a security agent working to protect TheGovernment against cyberattacks.
* A subplot arc in the first season of ''Series/{{Spooks}}'' involved the girlfriend of one of the agents adding two and two together to get five. (The time the agent went undercover as a married man and then forgot to take the ring off before he went home really didn't help.)
* Spy's Suspicious Daughter in ''Series/TheAmericans''. Paige, the teenage daughter of two Soviet deep cover agents masquerading as Americans, grows suspicious of her parents in Season 2 and starts snooping.
* Mary Woodhull, Abraham's wife in ''{{Series/Turn}}''.
* Not a spy, exactly, but ''Series/{{Bones}}'' once had a victim who turned out to be separated from her husband because she (and her sister, who also suspected him of the murder) thought he was cheating. It turned out he was sneaking out and spending time at a sleazy motel to meet a legal contact because he was testifying in a major federal case.
* One episode of ''Series/{{CSI}}'' involved the investigation in the murder of an undercover cop that had been lynched by the criminal biker gang that he had infiltrated and the apparent fact that this had happened because his cover had been blown. Turns out that his wife had been suspicious for a long time now of him being unfaithful to her and called the number on his cell phone that she believed was his mistress' while pissed-off and blindingly drunk. Which was the number of the gang's roadhouse. While the cop was in the room. And the call was put on speaker. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone Oops.]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''WebAnimation/ETUAnimatedStories'': Ethan, a CIA agent discovers that his wife Jodi is an undercover Chinese spy. They go on a mission together to investigate their neighbors who are not what they seem. They pose as a driver and a maid, although they swapped roles.
