An alternative to the JetPack, basically an AwesomeBackpack with helicopter blades.

There are two basic varieties:

191) The "rotor variant", which features (usually just one) helicopter rotor, usually sticking right out of the top of the pack, centered over the user's head. Tend to appear in SteamPunk settings, in the hands of the GadgeteerGenius, and in other situations where the author wants a more primitive-looking or whimsical design.

212) The "jet variant", which features (usually two) ducted fans or small jet engines, often stuck on the ends of long poles or wings. These tend to appear in more futuristic settings, or when the author wants a more realistic or military feel.

Compared to the JetPack, both varieties tend to be more maneuverable but slower (and there's no ToastedBuns issue).

A SubTrope of {{Flight}} and AwesomeBackpack. See also HelicopterHair, HeliCritter (the biological versions of the rotor variant), and FutureCopter (the vehicular version of the jet variant).

!!Examples:
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* Both ''Manga/{{Appleseed}}'' and ''Anime/BubblegumCrisis'' have police micro-copters with close similarities.
* ''Manga/DeadDeadDemonsDededededestruction'' features a variant used by the aliens. It looks something like a mallet; when powered up, it clamps to the user's head, extends rotor blades, and lets them fly.
%%* Heavyarms gets one in the ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'' remake ''Glory of the Losers''.
* ''Manga/YuGiOhGX'' has Elemental Hero Stratos, who has rotor/wing hybrids.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
%%* The Penguin's umbrella from ''ComicBook/{{Batman}}''.
* ''ComicBook/MortadeloYFilemon'': Parodied, as a sort of parachute carried by Filemon that is ''manually operated'' using a crank and of course does not serve [[NotTheFallThatKillsYou to stop his fall]].
* Robota in ''ComicBook/PlanetTerry'' has a built-in helicopter pack that she uses to save Planet Terry from falling.
* ''ComicBook/Robin1993'': Jaeger wears a wing with small jet engines attached to each end strapped to his back.
* In ''ComicBook/SHIELD2010'', the Franchise/MarvelUniverse version of Creator/LeonardoDaVinci goes one step more retro with the [[http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/potw_shield1.jpg Ornithopter Pack]], which overlaps with WingedHumanoid.
* ''ComicBook/SpirouAndFantasio'': Fantasio invents one of these to win a competition in "Spirou et les Héritiers".
%%* Lex Luthor in the 1929 story of ''ComicBook/SupermanAndBatmanGenerations''.
%%* ''ComicBook/TomStrong'''s [[http://www.comics.org/issue/213210/cover/4/ heli-pack.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/RocketshipVoyager'': While in the cube-ship of the Psiborg Collective, Captain Janeway sees [[{{Cyborg}} Psiborgs]] flying around a vast docking bay using contra-rotating rotor blades. When the docking bay is decompressed, they have to race to land before there's no more air to support them, and other Psiborgs with {{Jet Pack}}s take over.
* In ''Fanfic/TalesOfAResetMind'', Joy uses one of this to escape the Memory Dump in ''Part Two''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animated]]
* The Rahaga in ''Toys/{{BIONICLE}} 3: Web of Shadows''. It's non-canon, but the filmmakers thought it would look cooler than having them climb everywhere. Their toys use these "packs" (actually Rhotuka spinners) as projectiles, so they're not really part of their anatomy.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/AgentCodyBanks'': Cody uses the Solotrek XFV (see the Real Life folder), although the scenes in the movie were produced by special effects.
* ''Film/{{Sleeper}}'': Miles tries to escape from the police by donning a helicopter pack and flying away. It doesn't work very well.
* The Vulture's suit in ''Film/SpiderManHomecoming'' uses two ducted fans in addition to wings.
* ''Film/TheWhispererInDarkness'': The aliens wear an engine pack with vibrating wings to pursue the protagonist in his biplane.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* In ''Literature/BlackMansBurden'' by Creator/MackReynolds, one character uses a heliohopper to impress the natives with his ability to fly, as it's basically this trope. On landing, it can be collapsed into a 75-pound pack.
* At the end of ''Literature/TheLastHero'', Leonard of Quirm is shown with a [[http://www.da-vinci-inventions.com/aerial-screw.aspx Da Vinci aerial screw]] strapped to his back.
* Bernard Wolfe's science-fiction novel ''Literature/{{Limbo|1952}}'' had a society where people willingly amputate their own limbs and replace them with artificial ones. In one scene, a group of such cyborgs fly into a jungle clearing, using contra-rotating helicopter blades attached to an extended {{Artificial Limb|s}}.
* In ''Literature/MoonOfIce'' by Brad Linaweaver, a [[StupidJetpackHitler Nazi assassin]] is [[NeuralImplanting implanted]] with a propaganda fantasy of him slaughtering giants using a four-bladed gauntlet that is both this trope [[HelicopterBlender and a weapon]].
* ''Literature/TheStarBeast'': Both John Thomas Stuart and Betty Sorenson use one of these (called a "flight harness" in the book). [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/The_Star_Beast_cover_9836.jpg The cover of the 1954 edition.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* In the final episode of ''Series/ComeBackMrsNoah'', ThePlan is to lower the orbit of the runaway SpaceStation into the atmosphere so the crew can jump out wearing a heli-glidette. This leads to Mrs. Noah training how to use the device by jumping up and down on a trampoline in a wind tunnel, while wearing a [[SpaceClothes silly silver costume]] and pulling the starter cord between her legs to start the engine. On live television.
* ''Series/LadyFan'', a TVB drama series set in the Tang Dynasty, has the supporting character, Ying-Lung, who is a rich playboy and genius inventor, creating a helicopter hat using BambooTechnology, which can support an adult's weight and have it's wearer remain airborne for around ten minutes. Yes, in the ''Tang Dynasty''. And because ReedRichardsIsUseless, it never occurred to anyone in the show to mass-produce his inventions, instead dismissing Ying-Lung's various gadgets as "toys created by a bored rich playboy".
* The ''Series/MythBusters'' build one in season four but can't get it to lift off.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* ''Fate Accelerated Edition'' sample character Dr. Bethesda Flushing's mobility-enhancing Experimental Helo Pack stunt, as prominently seen in her image on the back cover.
* ''TabletopGame/SpheresOfPower'' features the Technician class, which can create a Propellor Pack with their Invention class feature by combining an ordinary backpack and some steampower.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Toys]]
* In the UK in the 1970s, the Palitoy ''Franchise/ActionMan'' had the highly desirable [=TurboCopter=] backpack.
%%* The Joker got this accessory when Creator/{{Kenner}} made their ''Franchise/{{Batman}}: The Dark Knight Collection'' line.
* The ''Franchise/GIJoe'' "Adventure Team" line had one. ''This'' was part of a shared "power-pack" accessory: you got the battery-powered pack, and you could attach things like the helicopter as well as drills and saws (for rescues), signal lights, etc. The Adventure Team also featured a character called "Mike Power: Atomic Man" (a CaptainErsatz of Series/TheSixMillionDollarMan), who could fly with helicopter blades attached to his bionic hand. The ''[[WesternAnimation/GIJoeARealAmericanHero Real American Hero]]'' line has had a couple of these as well.
* ''Anime/GundamBuildFighters'' had an example for the Grimoire Red Beret in the [[https://en.gundam.info/news/gunpla/news_gunpla_20180524_0019.html Tiltrotor Pack]], which installs a pair of V-22 Osprey-like rotating engine turbines onto a backpack compatible with most Gunpla models in the line. Unusually, despite being an obvious MechaExpansionPack, it was never actually featured in the show, likely due to Rommel's already limited screen time.
%%* ''Toys/HeroFactory'': Rotor.
* Although the [[ComicBook/MicronautsMarvelComics comic book adaptation]] doesn't portray it this way, in the original ''Toys/{{Micronauts}}'' action figure line, Acroyear's huge backpack is clearly designed to look like one of these.
* The ''WesternAnimation/PoliceAcademyTheAnimatedSeries'' toyline had a thief named Claw ([[WesternAnimation/InspectorGadget no, not that one]]) who used one of these in his getaways.
* Egon Spengler, of ''WesternAnimation/TheRealGhostbusters'', had one within the "Power Pack Heroes" line.
* ''Franchise/TransformersGeneration1'': In ''Action Masters'', Bumblebee came with a helicopter pack (appropriately named "Heli-Pack") that transformed into a cannon.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
%%* The Barrier Soldiers in Area 5 of ''VideoGame/BionicCommando''.
%%* The hero of ''VideoGame/BladeForce'' uses one of these.
* The first boss of ''VideoGame/{{Bug|1995}}'' (a giant snail) has a variant of this, where it retracts into its shell and helicopter blades come out of the top.
* The Copter Pack from ''VideoGame/CrashBandicootTheWrathOfCortex'' is basically a simplified version of the rotor variant. [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/crashban/images/3/3f/Crash_Bandicoot_The_Wrath_of_Cortex_Copter_Pack.png/revision/latest?cb=20170121235053 See for]][[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/crashban/images/4/48/Wocpak.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180405093501 yourself.]]
%%* A player-usable one appears in the second ''VideoGame/DarkCastle'' game.
* The weak point of the Baron K. Roolenstein of ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry3DixieKongsDoubleTrouble''. King K. Rool brings it back for use as his recovery move in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate''.
* Roderick Hero, the playable character of the early Creator/{{Activision}} game ''H.E.R.O.'' wears one of the one-rotor variety, which he uses to get around the game's caves to find and rescue stranded miners. Even the title stands for Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation, referring to the backpack.
* In ''VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends'', winged character Kayle has a skin option (Riot Kayle) that replaces her wings with helicopter rotors.
* ''VideoGame/MiniRobotWars'': During the [[NewGamePlus second episode]], many of the land-based Mooks get one, allowing them to become {{Airborne Mook}}s.
* The [[BizarreAlienLocomotion Sligs]] from ''[[VideoGame/{{Oddworld}} Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee]]'' use a small variant that is attached to their lower spine and is controlled by two joysticks.
* In the [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2002 first game]] of the ''Franchise/RatchetAndClank'' series, Clank gets upgraded with the Heli-Pack, allowing him to assist Ratchet in platforming with high jump, long jump, and glide maneuvers. Whenever it's used, a large propeller pops out of his head and two more emerge from his chest. It differs from the [[JetPack Thrusterpack]] in that it can't dash in the air (in the first game and ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2016'' only) and it's slower when gliding in both descent speed and movement speed. However, it gets more height than the Thrusterpack due to different animations; the Thrusterpack's high jump has Ratchet jump at the same time that Clank boosts him upwards, while the Heli-Pack has Ratchet jump first before Clank lifts him higher. In ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClankFutureACrackInTime'', Clank, when on his own, can use the Heli-Pack to perform an aerial boost upwards three times before landing, increasing his platforming prowess significantly. The duo's appearance in ''VideoGame/PlayStationAllStarsBattleRoyale'' also allows them to glide using Clank's Heli-Pack.
* ''VideoGame/{{Scathe}}'' has undead ''demons'' with helicopter packs organically grafted to their shoulders.
%%* Spawnable in ''VideoGame/{{Scribblenauts}}'' by typing "Helibackpack".
* ''VideoGame/{{Skullgirls}}'': Painwheel can use her Buer Drive's blades like helicopter rotors to fly.
* ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2'': The Spy's taunt "Travel Agent" features a [[ShoePhone suitcase that transforms into a helicopter pack]] for the Spy to wear on his back and hover around.
* [[{{Kappa}} Nitori]] uses one in the ''Franchise/TouhouProject'' FightingGame, ''VideoGame/TouhouShinkirouHopelessMasquerade''... which is a little weird, since she can fly on her own.
* The first boss of ''VideoGame/{{Wrack}}'', Geizer, wears back-turbines with wings attached, and is fought in a penthouse where he fires at you from behind windows while airborne.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* ''Webcomic/GirlGenius'' has a {{steampunk}} [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20110110 hybrid]] between this and JetPack, referred to as 'The Flight Raiment of King Darius the Incandescent'. Mk 2, ''of course''. Used by [[spoiler:Zola]] to escape from Castle Heterodyne.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* Numbuh 2 of ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'' has one in "[[Recap/CodenameKidsNextDoorS3E12AOperationPRESIDENT Operation: P.R.E.S.I.D.E.N.T.]]". While the Kids Next Door are transporting the Fourth Grade President to City Hall in School Bus 1, Numbuh 2 makes use of this when he is sucked out of the bus by the Delightful Children from Down the Lane's robotic copy of the president. Numbuh 2 could only hopelessly look on as the bus flew out of sight after the fact[[spoiler:, but then uses it to save the real Fourth Grade President from falling to his death and drop him off at city hall after he is kicked off the bus after duking it out with the robotic fake, while Numbuh 1 pilots the bus and the robot President to a junkyard, where he and the rest of the team destroy them in a trash compactor]].
%%* Airwave, the CommunicationsOfficer from ''WesternAnimation/COPS1988'', uses one. Vowels, a character from the canceled third wave of the action figure line, would have had one too.
* ''WesternAnimation/GeneratorRex'':
** As pictured, one of [[{{Technopath}} Rex]]'s [[ShapeshifterWeapon mechanical constructs]] is [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/842d08c88da90695e0d8d0bf6473636b.PNG the Boogie Pack]] which is capable of using part of its turbine to attack or grab an enemy, [[spoiler:and was even enhanced with rocket launchers by ''Upgrade'' in ''WesternAnimation/Ben10GeneratorRexHeroesUnited'']].
** [[spoiler:Black Knight]] eventually gains a similar version near the end of the series.
%%* ''WesternAnimation/InspectorGadget'' has one of these on his head.
* ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPandaLegendsOfAwesomeness'': After the defeat of his HumongousMecha in "Sticky Situation", Taotie produces his staff from which blades appear and spin menacingly. Rather than attack Po however, he just holds it up in the air and takes off promising WeWillMeetAgain... until his improvised helicopter crashes because his slacker son forgot to grease the mechanism.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'': Rainbow Dash's [[spoiler:pet tortoise Tank]] is fitted with one at the end of "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E7MayTheBestPetWin May the Best Pet Win!]]".
%%* The Kopterpack from ''WesternAnimation/SpiralZone''.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheTick'', the quartet of Swiss thieves wears giant Swiss army knives on their backs, with deployable helicopter blades for flight.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers'': In the episode "[[Recap/TheVentureBrosS2E2HateFloats Hate Floats]]", Brock Sampson and Phantom Limb try out a couple of these.
* Jack Spicer from ''WesternAnimation/XiaolinShowdown'' has a helicopter pack; he got it as a present when he turned evil.

[[folder:Real Life]]
* An Austrian inventor worked on the concept during World War II with the [[http://aviastar.org/helicopters_eng/baumgartl_heliofly-1.php Heliofly I]] and [[http://aviastar.org/helicopters_eng/baumgartl_heliofly-357.php Heliofly III]]. One of the AwesomeButImpractical weapons covered in ''My Tank is Fight'' by Zack Parsons.
* The [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Jetpack Martin Jetpack.]] It was claimed as first practical Helicopter Backpack in history and near-production for a [[VaporWare decade]].
* The [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoloTrek_XFV Solotrek XFV]]. Showed up on the big screen in ''Film/AgentCodyBanks'', and it would have flown for real in the movie, but an incident during testing grounded it.
* The [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaman_KSA-100_SAVER Kaman KSA-100 SAVER]] was an ejection seat that could convert into a gyrocopter. It was developed during the Vietnam War to fly pilots away from enemy territory after they ejected.
