->''"WHY DOES NATURE HATE US?!"''
-->-- '''Mr. & Mrs. Turner''', ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'', "Squirrely Puffs"

How a character treats, reacts to, and is reacted to by animals delivers a wealth of information to a viewer. The virginal PrincessClassic can [[FriendToAllLivingThings summon woodland friends with song]], the JerkWithAHeartOfGold will (despite hating animals) get LickedByTheDog, while the man in the BlackCloak with a RedRightHand causes everything around him to [[WalkingWasteland wither and die]], and even his RightHandAttackDog [[HoistByHisOwnPetard just]] ''[[EnemyToAllLivingThings won't stop barking at him!]]''

Then there's people who, regardless of their morality or niceness, simply have Animals Hate Him. Always, without fail. Offering a dove crumbs gets them dive bombed and [[ExcrementStatement crapped on]]. Petting a cat will result in getting inch deep claws dug into their leg, if not getting outright bit; and don't even ''ask'' what happens when this character is stupid enough to visit the woods or a zoo.

The reason for this animalistic antagonism varies. Maybe they just smell wrong, or ''[[LetsMeetTheMeat 'good']]''. Perhaps they try too hard, or just have terrible skills at reading an animal's mood. Maybe they're just a ButtMonkey or ChewToy. [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals Maybe they were especially cruel to]] [[CruellaToAnimals animals in a past life.]] Sometimes there's no explanation; animals just don't like them. Characters who consider themselves "in tune with nature" à la the NatureHero or GranolaGirl, or "so pure and innocent" that they ''should'' receive friendly animal treatment are the likeliest to be treated this way, often to highlight just how out of touch they really are.

That is, this is an animal combination of EverythingTryingToKillYou and HatedByAll. Compare ScareTheDog, where animals react with terror, not hate, although there is some overlap, and JealousPet, for when an individual pet is jealous of someone.

If this trope accelerates into a dangerous level, it becomes an AnimalStampede. See also EvilDetectingDog.

[[JustForFun/IThoughtItMeant And no]], they don't hate him [[https://knowyourmeme.com//memes//trainers-hate-him because he learned one weird trick]] or anything like that.

!!Examples:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* Sakaki from ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'', much to her disappointment. She ''loves'' animals and is to all extent a KindheartedCatLover, but every cat she meets tend to run away or turn violent when she approaches. Even a ''mechanical toy kitten'' breaks down when she tries to touch it. Only Mayaa, a wild-born Iriomote cat, approaches her without fear. Mr. Tadakichi, a [[BigFriendlyDog dog]], likes her just fine though.
* Nanami in ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'' is known for this. In "The Great Curry High Trip," Namami is haunted by three elephants who interfere with her journey to retrieve rare spicy explosive curry from India, notably by surfing into her raft. Fortunately, for what thinly-defined realism exists in the show, most of Nanami's dealings with animals are treated humorously and metaphorically [[spoiler:except for the cat she killed (or at least sent away in a box) as a little girl, out of jealousy]].
** This is implied to be a curse laid down by Anthy, the girl who was cruelly humiliated by Nanami in the party of the third episode, and is shown [[AnimalLover to have excessive love for animals]]. It's hardly a coincidence that Nanami's wacky hijinks with animals started in episode four and would much of the time relate to her selfish, prankster activities.
* Suzaku Kururugi of ''Anime/CodeGeass'' has difficulties with cats, presumably due to cats being cynical creatures by nature and him being a somewhat hypocritical idealist. The funny thing is, Arthur (the student council's pet cat) actually ''does'' like him; it's just that [[{{Tsundere}} he chooses to show his affection towards Suzaku through biting]]. It should be noted that Arthur is the only cat that Suzaku seems to get that treatment from (that we see in the show). However, it's definitely a Tsundere-style dynamic: He takes the cat with him to-and-from Britannia, and Arthur [[spoiler:watches over his grave sadly in the finale. Thankfully, he's not dead, so Arthur's bound to recognize and bite him at some point]]. Arthur saved his life near the end of the first season, by leaping on Tamaki's head at a crucial moment.
* Van Hohenheim of ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'', [[spoiler:due to being a living Philosopher's Stone, a highly unnatural thing that sends animals berserk. He calmly calls himself a monster when this happens]].
* Saya Otonashi from ''Anime/BloodPlus''. Animals of all kinds avoid her constantly [[spoiler: because she's a vampire. It can be assured that her EvilTwin sister Diva is this as well.]]
* ''Manga/{{Haikyuu}}'': Kageyama's biggest concern (in high school) is that animals dislike him.
* Isumi from ''Manga/HayateTheCombatButler'' gets this reaction from Shiranui when they first meet. Hayate smartly averts the anger by spraying her with cat nip.
* ''Manga/MakeTheExorcistFallInLove'': People and animals instinctively fear Father, with most giving him a wide berth wherever he goes. Even fish will swim anywhere but his general vicinity when all he's doing is looking at them. He keeps so many animal plushies because the real thing would simply flee in his presence.
* ''Manga/MedakaBox'': Animals don't necessarily hate Medaka, they can just sense exactly how powerful and intimidating she is and are thus ''utterly terrified'' of her. This is mostly played for laughs as Medaka is an animal lover and gets depressed because none of them will get anywhere near her. At one point the Student Council finds a facility full of animals that ''don't'' immediately run; while everyone else realizes that something is up, Medaka [[GenkiGirl flips out and acts like a little kid in a zoo]].
** [[spoiler:In the epilogue of the manga, ten years after the cast graduated high school, this is no longer true since in the intervening time Medaka (like most of the Abnormals) lost her unusual abilities and mellowed out. The first time we see 26-year-old Medaka, she's napping with about a dozen dogs of various breeds around her, and her "introduction" text box says that her special ability is animal empathy.]]
** This trait is humorously acknowledged in ''VideoGame/JStarsVictoryVs'', where [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Raoh]] is upset and confused because Medaka somehow managed to spook his CoolHorse Kokuoh, who's just as large and imposing as his owner. Medaka still thinks he's adorable.
* ''Anime/GhostInTheShellStandAloneComplex'': For some reason, dogs dislike Batou. They can still detect him when he's camouflaged, and bark at him continuously. He most likely doesn't smell right to them.
* Animals, like humans, tend to assume ''Manga/KimiNiTodoke'''s Sawako is a walking corpse and react accordingly.
* In ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'', every animal that we've seen meet Russia so far has rejected him. The ''sole'' exception is [[CuteKitten his pet cat]].
* [[FaceOfAThug Kitano]] from ''Manga/AngelDensetsu'' is this only in the [=OVA=], while he's actually a FriendToAllLivingThings and animals like him in the manga. He cached a bee with his bare hands, so it couldn't land on Ryoko's face, and the bee didn't sting.
* Usui of ''Manga/MaidSama'' has the charm and good looks to [[EvenTheGuysWantHim seduce virtually any human]], but while he apparently loves cats, they can't stand him. He's never seen interacting with any other animals, so it's unclear whether it's just cats or a general issue - and no explanation is given, either. The fact that he took in a stray cat despite it scratching and biting him whenever it gets the chance is simply part of his HiddenDepths.
* Taromaru from ''Manga/SchoolLive'' won't let Miki pet him and runs away from her. [[spoiler:It turns out to be less dislike as it is distrust, stemming from when she yelled at him when her friend Kei left her in the mall and then hurt him when she physically restrained him from leaving. Despite this, Taroumaru was worried for her and barked when Yuki and the others found him, trying to bring their attention to Miki, and even rushed to help her when she was swarmed by zombies. And in episode 9, he fully forgives her and allows her to touch him and play with him again.]]
* In the first chapter of ''[[Manga/MissKobayashisDragonMaid Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Kanna's Daily Life]]'' reveals that the pet rabbit in Kanna's class is terrified of her [[MysteriousAnimalSenses due to being able to sense her draconic nature]].
* ''Manga/SquidGirl'': Downplayed with the eponymous protagonist; she doesn't have any luck with stray dogs or Sanae's pet dog Alex (in the latter case, because he's jealous of her hogging his master's attention), but ''other'' dogs and animals in general are fine with her.
* Haru of ''Music/{{Tsukiuta}}'', most notably with his idol unit's pet rabbit, Kuroda.
* ''Manga/BocchiTheRock'': Poor Hitori is often the victim of attacks by the birds at Enoshima, which Ryo speculates is because they instinctively look down on her for her weakness.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* This seems to be the case with ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'' villain Tombstone. In one storyline when he and his rival Joe Robinson are taken in by an Amish farmer after the villain escapes from prison (forcing Joe to come with him) the farmer's horse is spooked when it sees him. The FauxAffablyEvil villain apologizes, claiming "animals tend to react like that around me". (Note that this happened ''before'' Tombstone acquired any superpowers. He was simply a BadassNormal assassin at this point.)
* ''ComicBook/Robin1993'': Tim Drake has a lot more trouble with animals than the other Robins, running into attack dogs he always feels guilty about fighting rather often and once dealing with an incredibly ornery cat he tried to save, that turned out to be ComicBook/KlarionTheWitchBoy's angry lost familiar instead of an actual cat.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* Andrew Philip "AP" [=McIntyre=], as created in Canadibrit's ''WesternAnimation/{{Daria}}'' fan saga ''The Look-Alike Series''. He is tagged with this trope by his friends and looked at with disbelief when he tries to get work as a dog walker to see if it's ceased to be the case. [[spoiler:''It Hasn't.'']]
* Oliver in ''Webcomic/TypeTrainer''. Kind of a problem when said animals are Franchise/{{Pokemon}}.
* ''Fanfic/RiseOfTheGaleforces'' takes this trope to its logical - and violent - conclusion with [[spoiler:the BigBad, Peter Ludlow. Let's just say that if every animal in cartoon history [[BigDamnHeroes is called in to help the heroes get rid of you,]] well, [[OmnicidalManiac you need help.]] ''Badly.'']]
* In ''Fanfic/DividedRainbow'', this is taken to a truly nightmarish level with Rainbow Dash and the animals of Fluttershy's cottage.
* In the ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'' universe of Creator/AAPessimal, the unfortunate troll Asphalt (see below for canonical appearance) now works in the City Zoo. with his beloved elephants. [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7485737/1/Zoo-Tales Who still love to sit on him]].
* {{ZigZagg|ingTrope}}ed in ''Fanfic/SurrogateOfZero''. Kirche's fire lizard is afraid of Shinji, but Tabitha's dragon just bites his head and slobbers on him in nothing more than apparent curiosity.
* ''Fanfic/MrAndMrsGold'': Hilariously inverted. Despite not wanting to have anything to do with him, Rose’s adopted kitten Figaro takes a liking to Mr. Gold, following him around and making himself a nuisance every chance he gets. Mr. Gold does not start warming up to him until after [[spoiler:[[EvilDetectingDog Figaro scratches at Regina when she tried to pet him]].]]
* ''Fanfic/CodePrime'' shows that Arthur isn't the only cat who bites Suzaku. When Leila's cat Eliza meets the Black Knights, she bites Suzaku's hand when he tries to pet her.
* In ''Fanfic/CodeGeassThePreparedRebellion'', Lelouch reveals that it's not just cats that dislike Suzaku as the latter has been chased by countless dogs and even been defecated on by passing birds. And all this even before the Invasion of Japan.
* ''Fanfic/MariaCampbellOfTheAstralClocktower'': As in canon, dogs hate Katarina. However, since the fic takes place in the distant future of ''VideoGame/DarkSouls'' (where dogs vary between GoddamnedBats and DemonicSpiders), all knights hate dogs. When she starts training to be a knight, all the other knights agree that this mutual antipathy is an auspicious sign for her future.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film - Animated]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989'': Ursula. When she is in her human form “Vanessa”, birds divebomb her, pelicans dump water on her, a lobster pinches her nose, starfish slam themselves into her, seals bounce her around, dolphins spray her in the face, the bird Scuttle screams in her face, and finally Max the dog bites her butt. Part of this is because Scuttle instructed them to do this, but her bad reputation as a sea witch probably doesn't help. Averted with Ursula's pet eels Flotsam and Jetsam, who are extremely loyal to her as much [[BenevolentBoss as she cares for the two eels.]]
* Luigi in ''WesternAnimation/TheSuperMarioBrosMovie'' isn't good with animals. In the first act alone, while rushing to their first plumbing job he's attacked by a cat, and then gets the ire of a dog for accidentally stepping on his bone. And of course, there's him being chased and captured by Bowser and his Koopa armies.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film - Live-Action]]
* Little Damien from ''Film/TheOmen1976'' absolutely freaks out most animals he meets. This is, of course, because Damien is [[TheAntichrist the son of Satan himself]] and the most evil kid on the planet.
* ''Film/FailureToLaunch'' protagonist, Tripp ([[BasementDweller who is a 30+ slacker who refuses to move from his parent's home]]) is bitten three times by the most improbable creatures: a chipmunk, a lizard and a ''dolphin'', his friends come to the conclusion that this is because what he is doing goes ''against'' nature and thus nature ''rejects'' him.
* In ''Film/TheresSomethingAboutMary'', Magda's dog "only barks at the bad people", leading Matt Dillon's character to drug it before his date with Mary so both she and Magda think he is a nice guy.
* ''Film/{{Unforgiven}}'': When he cannot mount his own horse, William Munny invokes this by claiming that his horse is taking revenge on him because he was mean with all the animals in his past. Later, [[BadassBoast Munny will claim:]]
-->''"That's right. [[MoralEventHorizon I killed women and children]]. [[OmnicidalManiac Killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another]]. [[PreMortemOneLiner And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.]]"''
* In ''Film/TheTerminator'' dogs hate the title cyborgs, even in human form. It's not training, as dogs reacted this way to Skynet's machines even before the Terminators were built.
* In the original ''Film/CatPeople'', the kitten Oliver buys for Irena hisses when she approaches it; when they go to the pet store to exchange it for a bird all the animals become agitated. Later, the bird dies of fright when Irena picks it up.
** Lampshaded by the pet store worker: "[[EvilDetectingDog Animals are ever so psychic]]. There are some people who just can't come in here."
* In ''Film/JurassicWorld'', the raptors really don't like Vic Hoskins and become aggressive every time he comes near them. Barry even has to point out to Hoskins that Delta staring at him is because she considers him prey. [[spoiler:Delta is the one who inevitably winds up disemboweling him]].
** PlayedWith, in that Hoskins relates a story of befriending a wolf cub who turned out to be fiercely loyal to him. The raptors are either smart enough to know what Hoskins has planned for them, and are objecting, or more likely picking up on Owen's dislike for the man and assuming that if their alpha has a problem with him, he must be bad news.
* ''Film/AFishCalledWanda'': Despite being an animal lover, Ken doesn't seem to have much luck with dogs. One of Mrs. Coady's Yorkshire terriers snaps at him when he tries to stroke it and he gets attacked by a Doberman Pinscher he's trying to handle in the back of a van.
* At the end of ''Film/TheDeparted'', bad guy Colin Sullivan gets barked at by a lady's little dog he passes in the hallway outside his apartment.
* A RunningGag in ''Franchise/ThePinkPanther'' films is Inspector Clouseau's undignified run-ins with "swine birds".
* In ''Film/OperationDumboDrop'', Captains Cahill and Doyle, a pair of Green Berets in Vietnam, need to deliver an elephant to a remote village. While assembling their squad, they decide they need an animal expert and recruit a soldier named Farley. Farley's record says he came from a farm so they assume he must be great with animals but when they meet him, he says that he is this trope. In fact half the reason he joined the Army was to get off the farm and get away from animals.
* ''Film/KnivesOut'': Harlan's dogs hate his grandson Ransom, and bark and jump on him every time he comes by. By contrast, they eagerly run over to his personal nurse Marta for a pet every time she comes over. They also seem to like the rest of the family just fine. [[spoiler:Not only is this indicative of Ransom's [[PsychopathicManchild true nature]], it also ends up being part of his undoing. The investigator remembers Meg saying she heard the dogs barking late at night, after everyone had gone to bed and Ransom had left. They wouldn't have barked at anybody in the house, or at Marta, so either an intruder was on the property... or Ransom came back in secret for some reason.]]
* ''Film/TheParentTrap1998'': Meredith gets snapped at by an EvilDetectingDog, and then attacked by a lizard later on when they’re hiking.
* In ''Film/PortOfShadows'', one of our first clues that Nelly's guardian, Zabel, is more villainous than he lets on comes when the stray dog that has been following Jean starts barking angrily when Zabel visits the seaside bar to wash blood off his hands. When Jean and his dog later stop by Zabel's shop, the dog starts barking at Zabel again. [[spoiler:We later learn that the blood on Zabel's hands belonged to Nelly's would-be boyfriend Maurice, whom Zabel killed out of jealousy born of his own lust for her.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* [[EldritchAbomination Wilbur Whateley]] from Creator/HPLovecraft's ''Literature/TheDunwichHorror'' was so violently hated by any dog that came in close proximity to him that he always had to carry a revolver for protection. In the end he's brutally attacked and killed by a dog after his revolver malfunctioned while he was trying to steal the [[TomeOfEldritchLore Necronomicon]] from the Miskatonic University's library. Dogs were also hostile to other Lovecraftian creatures like the Mi-Go and Ancient Ones, but Whateley was the target of their strongest aggression.
* Played for comic purposes in the ''Literature/DalzielAndPascoe'' novels, as Sergeant Wield's partner Edwin Digweed winds up at odds with both a small dog and a marmoset.
* ''Series/{{Dexter}}'' finds that animals in general just can't stand him. He has a theory that they don't appreciate the horrible things he occasionally does to their masters, but his numerous attempts at keeping animals have all resulted in horrible failure (including a turtle that starved to death rather than come out of its shell and deal with him.)
* Sir Hugh Snuffler, a zoologist from the novel ''[[Literature/{{Airborn}} Starclimber]]'' by Kenneth Oppel, is an ironic example of this trope.
* Zachary Gustafson of Creator/GordonKorman's ''The Chicken Doesn't Skate'' is constantly attacked by the titular chicken, and considers it his enemy. (Of course, he still saves it from the slaughterhouse after he becomes unable to write a screenplay without putting in chickens out of guilt.)
* In ''Literature/TheZombieSurvivalGuide'', animals are terrified of zombies. They can smell TheVirus, and they don't like it.
* Probably related, in ''Literature/NightWatchSeries'' it is said that animals are instinctively afraid of the Dark Others just as they fawn upon the Light Ones.
* Literature/{{Discworld}}:
** Most animals (except dogs, for reasons explored in the books) instinctively flee or cower in the presence of [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent werewolves]]. [[JustifiedTrope It's an apex-predator thing]].
** Subverted with Death. Cats can see the supernatural for what it really is, and lack the WeirdnessCensor that normal humans possess, so you think they'd react poorly to the End of All Things. In fact, Death is a KindheartedCatLover, and they like him just fine. He also has a pale horse named Binky that he gets along well with.
** Played with in the case of royal falconer Hodgesaargh, so called because his introductions are constantly interrupted by the birds he handles attacking him. It's not so much that they hate him specifically, they just don't like humans in general. It says something about the disposition of Lancre's birds of prey that despite this, Hodgesaargh is considered pretty good at his job.
** Asphalt the troll from ''Literature/SoulMusic'' used to take care of the elephants in a circus. The elephants had a bad habit of sitting on him, which is why the malleable Asphalt is rather short and squat for a troll.
** Animals hate [[GranolaGirl Magrat]] too, but usually run away from her instead of attacking her. Her [[RunningGag search for a familiar]] in the early books sees her end up with a tortoise because it can't run away.
* Two examples in the ''Literature/AubreyMaturin'' series:
** Nathaniel Martin is almost as dedicated a naturalist as Stephen Maturin, but unlike Stephen, is almost invariably bitten or otherwise abused by the animals he studies. He has one eye... not an EyepatchOfPower due to battle or dueling, but due to an unfortunate encounter with an owl. (On the other hand, ''Maturin'' is the one who contrives to get poisoned by a platypus in Australia.)
** Jack Aubrey himself is AFatherToHisMen, but his luck with animals is almost nonexistant- he's been thrown from numerous horses, had his hat eaten by a wombat, and drove a sloth to alcoholism in an attempt to befriend it and keep it from wailing every time it was in his presence.
* In ''Literature/TheSagaOfTheNobleDead'', the ancient elf Most Aged Father is intensely disliked by the ''majay-hi'', magical wolves which normally get along well with elves, because of the manner in which he has unnaturally extended his lifespan.
* Mixed instance in the ''[[Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries ST:TOS]]'' novel ''Literature/{{Ishmael|1985}}'', which has an amnesiac Spock stuck on Earth in the 19th century. Reactions from the town's dogs range from hostility to terror, but cats find him fascinating.
* In ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'' dogs and horses are terrified of wights, even when they appear to be ordinary corpses. [[NobleWolf Ghost]] isn't.
* ''Literature/SheepsClothing'' plays with this: [[OurVampiresAreDifferent Russeau]] and [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent Wolf]] both cause horses to shy away, but Russeau commands an army of crows, and Wolf is friendly with [[EvilDetectingDog even the meanest dogs]].
* In ''Literature/TeamHuman'' it's noted that, despite the CommonKnowledge connecting vampires to bats, in reality all animals hate the undead, and the Shade (the vampire part of town) is seemingly devoid of pets. [[spoiler:This explains [[AnimalStampede the Ratastrope]] earlier in the book: the rats were scared of Dr. Saunders' [[OurZombiesAreDifferent zombie]]]].
* ''Literature/{{Everworld}}'' has an oddly specific example: no horse (including intelligent, talking horses) will let [[OurWitchesAreDifferent a witch]] ride them. At one point the main characters are flying on {{Pegasus}}' family while [[TokenEvilTeammate Senna]] has to ride in a chariot below them.
* The protagonist of ''Literature/{{Murderess}}'', Lu, at least on Earth (she seems perfectly capable of riding a horse in Greywall’d). Not that she minds in particular, as they just keep their distance, and she has little interest in them.
* [[DarkIsNotEvil Nico di Angelo]], son of Hades, from ''Literature/TheHeroesOfOlympus'' comments on how animals don't like him because they sense his [[BadPowersGoodPeople death-related powers]]. His half-sister Hazel has the same problem: cats hiss at her, dogs growl at her, and even the hamster in her teacher's classroom squeaks in terror when she feeds it. The only exceptions are horses.
* In ''Literature/VampireAcademy'', animals dislike dhampirs, while having no problem with the Moroi. The mere presence of a dhampir sets them on edge.
* Some animals in ''Literature/TheWheelOfTime'' can instinctively identify channelers like Aes Sedai; cats and dogs might attack or run, while wolves, being [[NobleWolf more intelligent]], merely tread carefully.
* In the ''Literature/MalazanBookOfTheFallen'', the mage/[[DemolitionsExpert sapper]] Spindle has this effect on animals. It's usually subdued, but as soon as he uses magic, all animals within a certain area become aggressive and go completely nuts. Mallet points out how it's useful to have Spindle around in case enemy cavalry needs to be disposed of.
* Derek from ''Literature/DarkestPowers'' is a werewolf and dogs can smell it. They used to [[ScareTheDog fear him]] however now they try to attack him.
* In the Creator/JamesPatterson novel that inspired ''Series/{{Zoo}}'', the mysterious animal attacks are found to be a result of pollution-induced pheromones emitted by human beings which are similar to the attack-pheromones of insects. Thus, this trope applies to ''everyone on the planet''.
* Heather Stone, the main character of ''Literature/{{Newshound}}'', is a werewolf, and is absolutely hated by dogs and other canines. She theorizes that it's because werewolves fall into a canine UncannyValley, since they smell wolfish but look human.
* The ''Literature/OldKingdom'' series: The evil {{Necromancer}} Hedge can't get near a horse without it panicking, all the more so after he becomes undead himself. He has to kill and [[RaisingTheSteaks reanimate]] horses to ride, and the horses still try to destroy themselves rather than serve him.
* Inverted in ''Literature/PetSematary.'' After Ellie Creed's pet cat Winston Churchill's ressurection, everyone instinctively hates him. Ellie stops letting him sleep in her bed, Louis constantly drives him off, and Rachel won't let him near Gage.
* ''Literature/ForestKingdom'': In book 2 (''Blood and Honor''), dogs, at least, hate Prince Viktor. When Jordan learns this, it makes him suspicious of the friendly bloodhound he'd found in his quarters earlier, until it turns out the dog was actually a ghost.
* Crooks from ''Literature/OfMiceAndMen'' has a crooked back because a horse had kicked him before, and he never recovered from it. Later, George uses a horse-kicking incident as part of a lie about Lennie's handicap, claiming that Lennie was kicked in the head by one when he was a kid.
* ''{{Literature/Wulfrik}}: Animals run in fear from Wulfrik when he enters Ormskaro. Doubles as EvilDetectingDog, since he's a chosen Champion of Chaos.
* Catarina in ''Literature/MyNextLifeAsAVillainessAllRoutesLeadToDoom'' is [[AllLovingHeroine loved by everyone]] apart from dogs, which will chase her up trees whenever they show up in the story.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Dogs are shown to hate ''Series/{{Dexter}}'''s title character, since they are somehow about to detect his serial killer tendencies. It probably also doesn't help that he used to kill animals as a child when his serial killer tendencies were starting to emerge (which is how RealLife {{Serial Killer}}s tend to get their start).
* In the pilot episode of ''Series/CriminalMinds'', a dog barks angrily at [[LovableNerd Dr. Spencer Reid]]. The owner apologizes, and Agent Hotchner replies, "It's okay. It's what we call the Reid Effect. It happens with children too."
* Poor Sweetums in one episode of ''Series/TheMuppetShow'' is depressed because of this. When he says hello to a dog, it bites his hand. When he says hello to a flower, it wilts.
** The Swedish Chef also tends to draw hostility from passing animals, but it's mainly because he wants to ''cook them''.
* ''Series/MyWorldAndWelcomeToIt'':
** One of John's dogs (a bloodhound named Irving) is depicted on various occasions to be attacking his master's pants leg, in episodes such as "Man Against the World," "The Shrike and the Chipmunks," "Dear Is a Four-Letter Word," and "Monroe the Misogynist." The act is never shown overtly, though -- normally, John is seen from chest-up, looking down at his right leg and making motions to shake the pooch off while canine growling and snarling is heard.
** John's other pooch, Christabel, is a poodle seen growling at John (during the episode "Christabel"). This episode also has John discussing a short essay he just wrote about a childhood dog his family owned, titled "Muggs: the Dog that Bit People" -- and according to the story, Muggs bit everyone in the family but John's mother. Later in the same episode, he says, "Actually, I don't dislike dogs. Dogs dislike me."
** John's cat Dimity Ann is presented as having bit her master as well as leaping onto him from the porch overhang. This leads to his [[APetIntoTheWild exasperatedly sneaking the feline out of the house and abandoning her in the woods nearby]]. (John relents and tries to locate her later, though the cat finds her way back home shortly after anyway.) Occurs in the episode "The Saga of Dimity Ann."
* Tribbles from the ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'' episode "[[Recap/StarTrekS2E15TheTroubleWithTribbles The Trouble with Tribbles]]" are {{Ridiculously Cute Critter}}s who like everyone -- except Klingons. When in their presence, their soft cooing turns to angry shrieks. Kirk is eventually able to use a couple [[ImpostorExposingTest to identify a Klingon in disguise]].
* This is one half of the shtick of animal control officer Ed Frid on ''Series/TheRedGreenShow''. The other half is that he is deathly afraid of almost every animal under the sun, although with how much they hate him he's got a pretty good reason to be.

* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFdhkRFQuZQ The song]] of the page quote.
* Music/AliceCooper, when his reputation comes back to bite him on the ass in ''[[CosmicPlaything No More Mister Nice Guy]]''. "My dog bit me on the leg today; my cat clawed my eyes.."

[[folder:Podcast]]
* In ''Podcast/PokemonAdventuresInTheMillennium'', bird Pokemon almost always attack Julian on sight. Apparently it's a family trait--his sister Danielle thinks one of their ancestors was cursed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* In ''TabletopGame/ArsMagica'', most people with the Gift of magic cause a deep sense of unease and distrust in nearby creatures, to the extent that domestic animals won't tolerate their presence without magical compulsion. Unusually for this trope, humans are also affected, which can make life [[BlessedWithSuck very difficult]] for untrained mages who don't know why people hate them on sight.
* In the ''TabletopGame/BattleTech'' Role-Playing Game, A Time Of War, Animal Antipathy is a negative trait you can choose for your character that causes this trope. It applies a penalty to all skill checks involving animals (riding, animal training, etc) makes them more likely to attack or flee from you, and causes any animals with the Aggressive trait to behave as if they have the [[UnstoppableRage Blood Rage]] trait, attacking the character automatically.
* [[CameBackWrong Harrowed]] in the ''TabletopGame/{{Deadlands}}'' game often have serious problems with animals in general. Some of them can [[CameBackWrong reanimate]] a dead animal, and use this to get a horse that won't try to kill them.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Exalted}}'' features a Celestial level spell that inflicts this on a person for as long as the caster wants. By the standards of the beings who can use that level of magic (At Essence 4 it's technically possible to kill Primordials) it's not terribly powerful but for when you absolutely, positively have to make someone's life hell it's pretty neat.
** The Abyssals can magically invoke this trope for themselves. They can even have it as permanent effect.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Pathfinder}}'' has the drawback Warded against nature, which causes animals to shy away from the charakter, regardless of how friendly or animal-loving he/she is.
* In ''TabletopGame/VampireTheMasquerade'' and its successor, ''TabletopGame/VampireTheRequiem'', most vampires freak out normal animals (though it can be somewhat mitigated with proper skills training). The exception are those gifted with animal-related mind powers.
* In the old edition ''TabletopGame/WarhammerFantasyRoleplay'', wizards dabbling in dark arts would sometimes develop an aura of "wrongness" as a work-related disorder. It scared children and made animals flee or attack.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* In ''VideoGame/BerenstainBearsCampingAdventure'', [[PlayerCharacter the Bear siblings]] have gotten lost on a hiking trip and just want to find their way back to the campsite. Too bad the animals in the forest have other ideas, as they go to any and all lengths to stop them.
* In just about every ''VideoGame/CabelasDangerousHunts'' game, the PlayerCharacter existing is enough for nearly every animal in the region to form an alliance and specifically attack you. This includes vultures, [[ArtisticLicenseBiology birds that will never attack a living person in real life]].
* In ''VideoGame/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice'', there's this brief sketch with Animal King Goro of the Diez Gentlemen. It features a character being mauled by various monsters. Recruiting Goro and talking to him a few times reveals why -- he's only raising the monsters so he can eat them; clearly the monsters have decided to strike first.
* In ''VideoGame/DontStarve: Reign of Giants'', Webber is a young boy trapped in the body of a spider, which he wears like a LivingBodySuit. This means that spiders won't attack him. Unfortunately, this also means that every neutral animal mob in the game ''will'' attack him on sight.
** In ''Don't Starve Together'', [[OurImpsAreDifferent Wortox]] has it even worse than Webber, as neutral mobs will be aggressive towards him but spiders won't show him any mercy either.
* ''VideoGame/FarCry3'': It is quite possible for players to find themselves on the receiving end of attacks by bears, boars, cassowaries, dingoes, dogs, buffalo, Komodo dragons, crocodiles, sharks, and big cats. Luckily, the animals also hate your foes too.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIIRemake'': The cats in Sector 7 Slums seem to loathe Cloud. One sidequest has him collecting cats by scaring them back to their owner.
* In ''VideoGame/FruitMystery'', all of the animals in the zoo tell the player that they hate him after he feeds them random foods.
* ''VideoGame/HarvestMoon'':
** ''VideoGame/HarvestMoonANewBeginning'' has the main character scare away every single animal they come across. You know there's a problem when ''[[BearsAreBadNews bears]]'' have you as their worst nightmare.
** Previous and later ''Harvest Moon'' games also use this trope. ''VideoGame/HarvestMoonTheTaleOfTwoTowns'' has smaller animals run away in fear and bigger ones attack. The trope returns in ''VideoGame/StoryOfSeasons2014''. In all of these games one can become a FriendToAllLivingThings by giving each individual species favorite food.
** ''VideoGame/HarvestMoonMeadowOfDreams'': Cats in particular aren't fond of Gerard.
* Non-monstrous animals in ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' series usually like Link (even when his current appearance is unimpressive or frightening to humans). Except for Cuccos. Their chicks are worse; they try to ''eat'' [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTheMinishCap Minish Link]]. [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask And that one time he got turned into a Deku Scrub]], and all the dogs apparently mistake him for a stick.
* The scripting in the ''VideoGame/NeverwinterNights'' mod ''The Bitter Taste of Blood'' is set up so that if your vampiric player character tries to use his/her powers near-normal animals (it doesn't affect wolves, but does affect deer) they will turn hostile and attack you.
* The feeling that the central character of ''VideoGame/RedDeadRedemption'' suffers from this becomes difficult to shake once you've experienced a few minutes in Cougar country. Or Bear country. Or if you've ever been in one of those spots where new packs of wolves appear to spawn every thirty seconds or so. ''Very'' occasionally, you may run into an animal that ''isn't'' actively trying to kill you; instead, it will be trying to kill someone else.
** This makes completing some of the hunting challenges particularly annoying- you can be skinning a dead wolf, surrounded by more than a dozen other dead wolves, only to have yet another pack of wolves spawn and attack you. Occassionally, they spawn so quickly that you end up facing an ever-increasing horde of predators.
** Yes, even the bunny rabbits. [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail That rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!]]
* In ''VideoGame/TheSims1'', dogs are known to growl and cats to hiss in the presence of [[SadClown the Tragic Clown]].
* Crossing with EvilDetectingDog, in ''VisualNovel/{{Snatcher}}'', Animals DO not react well in the presence of the titular Identity-stealing robots - the feeling's mutual [[spoiler: the characters ignored Alice the Doberman's frantic barking earlier in the story - before this tidbit was even mentioned. Poor dog ends up buying it]].
* The Grox in ''VideoGame/{{Spore}}'' are literally this- so much so that you can kill them by making their planets habitable.
* ''VideoGame/TalesOfVesperia'' has the heroine Estelle being ignored by Repede. This takes to funnier notion when she tries to touch Quickie in ''VideoGame/TalesOfTheWorld: Radiant Mythology 3'' but the Eternia mascot prefers the company of anyone other than her.
* Yuina Himoo from ''VisualNovel/TokimekiMemorial''. Do NOT take her out to the zoo, or the koalas will attack her on sight.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:WebAnimation]]
* Fluttershy, in season one of ''WebVideo/UltraFastPony'' (in stark contrast to her counterpart from the original canon, who's a FriendToAllLivingThings). When she tries to boss around or abuse animals, they push back and walk all over her. ("She can't even get a rabbit to eat a carrot!") When she tries to be nice to them, things go horribly wrong anyways. "I'm just so bad with animals!" becomes one of her catchphrases. However, she undergoes some unexpected character development in season two and starts getting along with animals a lot better.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* [[PlayedWith Zig Zagged]] in ''Webcomic/DarwinCarmichaelIsGoingToHell''. One the one hand, cats freak out at the sight of Darwin, most likely because of his overpowering aura of bad karma. On the other hand, his pet Manticore Skittles adores him, and unicorns just can't get enough of him.
* Sam of ''Webcomic/{{Freefall}}'' is sort of this... apparently, his alien cellular structure makes him incredibly tasty ''and'' [[NoBiochemicalBarriers easily digestible]] to any terran animal -- ''even the herbivores''. As a result, anytime he sticks a tentacle outside his environment-suit, it's liable to get bitten off by any nearby animal, regardless of its usual diet. He's been harassed by doves, frogs, dogs, and an emu... and that's just what we've heard of or seen.
** He once stuffed his pants full of crickets as live packing material for some stolen goods. When the crickets woke up, they tried to eat him.
* Asher of ''Webcomic/GetMedieval'' has a propensity for being menaced by waterfowl. Bees and badgers seem to have it in for him, too.
* ''Webcomic/TheGodOfHighSchool'' The protagonist doesn't like animals very much either, getting into hissing contests with cats and growling contests with dogs due to their mutual animosity.
* Hanna from ''Webcomic/HannaIsNotABoysName'' claims to have this problem in an interview.
* ''Webcomic/IronCrown'' has a gag strip where Shard, the resident SealedEvilInACan, clearly smells a bit ''off'' to the rescued pug that tags along with the cast. Being a bit of a troll, said demon [[http://ironcrowncomic.com/uploads/1524189971-willy_1.jpg has some fun with it]].
* Duane of ''Webcomic/{{Unsounded}}'' says this to explain why a usually-sweet dog has a violent reaction towards him, omitting the detail that he's actually a zombie.
* ''Webcomic/{{Memoria}}'' [[http://memoria.valice.net/?p=303 The children have been long attacked by animals.]]
* ''Webcomic/{{Tamuran}}'' [[http://www.tamurancomic.com/?p=489 I'm not so good with animals]]
* ''Webcomic/UnDivine'': Daniel finds this happening to him after he sells his soul to Esther. One of the first animals to attack him are ''doves'' of all things.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* There's no love lost on either side between WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic and fuzzy animals. He nearly always wants leading dogs to die, and a puppy turned into a gorilla to attack him.
* Protagonist Sye in ''LiteratureGravenHunterFiles'' has trouble riding horses, due to the fact that they all seem to dislike him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* Owen, who regularly gets abused by even sleeping animals on ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama Island'', but then, TDI resident animals are all horribly antagonistic and way outside their normal biomes.
** Outside of the above image, this didn't really apply [[FriendToAllLivingThings to DJ]] until ''World Tour''.
** Chris also appears to be a target of animals. Due to being the biggest {{Jerkass}} on the show, however, he usually deserves it.
** In ''Revenge of the Island'', everyone is threatened by the new mutated animals, but Scott is attacked the most, especially by the land shark, Fang.
** ''Pahkitew Island'' has Sugar, mainly due to her constant abuse of {{animal lover}} Ella.
** {{Inverted|Trope}} in the SpinOff, ''WesternAnimation/TotalDramaPresentsTheRidonculousRace.'' Adorable animals love [[{{Goth}} Ennui]], to his annoyance. Though he winds up adopting a KillerRabbit named Loki.
* I.R. Baboon, the literal ButtMonkey of the ''WesternAnimation/IAmWeasel'' Creator/CartoonNetwork shorts, gets this a lot. Most notable in the season 5 episode "Mission: Stupid," in which I.R. tries to rescue a kitten stuck on top of a tree but gets accosted by a squirrel, an eagle, and bumblebees, in that order, on the way there. [[spoiler:The kitten itself turns on him and Weasel as well at the end of the short, in retaliation for the massive property damages sustained in the rescue attempt.]]
* If an animal appears in ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'' in a subplot involving Steve, it's a sure bet it will attack him at some point.
* Crusher in ''WesternAnimation/BlazeAndTheMonsterMachines''. Specifically, he gets sprayed on by skunks, pinched by crabs, pecked by chickens a ''lot.'' Then again, he usually deserves this given his usual {{Jerkass}} behavior.
* Parodied in one episode of ''WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory''. Dexter accidentally blows a fuse in his lab, so must wait for the self-repair to come online. Unfortunately, it takes a full 48 hours. And that means...''going outside!'' {{Gasp}}! He promptly has an ImagineSpot where he is sitting outside only for a bear, several raccoons, a few squirrels, a couple of birds, and a '''''fish''''' all ZergRush him, creating a BigBallOfViolence. After spending the rest of the episode trying (and failing) to speed up the repair process of his lab, he gives up and curls up into a ball, shivering until his sister [=DeeDee=] convinces him to go outside and enjoy nature. He is more or less carried outside by [=DeeDee=] but he is immediately taken aback by the views and is starting to enjoy the outdoors...until the aforementioned ImagineSpot ''[[ProperlyParanoid comes true]]'' and he is beaten up by the animals. TheEnd.
* ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'': In the episode "Interview with a Platypus", Candace was attacked by a dog trained to purposely hurt her and keep her away from her LoveInterest. She comes screaming into her yard about how much she hates animals, and how stupid they are...on the very day her brothers have built an [[OhCrap animal translator]]. Her mom says that at least "Perry likes [her]", but [[AnimalSuperhero he's not exactly a normal animal]]...He's only insulted her once.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheMrMenShow'' there's Mr. Bump. Animals always attack him first even though there are other Mr. Men or Little Misses who are much closer to reach. This ranges from bees to reptiles, and even fish.
* In ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'' there's, of course, Squidward, who gets mauled by numerous animals, and even his own plants hiss at him. This is lampshaded by [=SpongeBob=] when he, Patrick and Squidward are camping outdoors and Squidward gets attacked by a sea bear several times, after which he tries to run from it, then is reduced to limping and then crawling in succession when attacked, and then gets attacked yet again even afterwards:
-->'''Squidward:''' What did I do that time?\
'''[=SpongeBob=]:''' I don't know, I guess he just doesn't like you!\
'''Patrick:''' Pretend to be someone else!
* WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry: Inverted with Tom himself in the series in general, where there doesn't seem to be a single human (his owners included) who likes his guts at all. Then again, almost [[HatedByAll everyone]] seems to hate him.
%% ** Biff from ''The Fast and the Furry''.
%% Needs context. Once context is provided, indent the other example accordingly.
* An old Creator/{{Terrytoons}} short with Gandy Goose has his roommate Sourpuss dreaming of being in an idyllic forest, where he sets an imprisoned bird free. The other animals attack him because they think he ate the bird.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'':
** In "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS3E13MagicalMysteryCure Magical Mystery Cure]]", Rainbow Dash becomes convinced that it's her destiny to care for animals. [[EpicFail She fails so badly]] at this that the animals--even the herbivores--try to cook and eat her.
** In "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS8E13TheMean6 The Mean 6]]", the EvilDoppelganger lookalike of Fluttershy briefly stops to torture the animals of the Everfree Forest, including the baby bird she stayed behind to help which resulted in her separated from her friends. By the time the real Fluttershy shows up seconds after her clone has zipped off, all of the animals begin shunning and resenting her to the point she's reduced to a crying mess.
* Omi of ''WesternAnimation/XiaolinShowdown'' has the worst luck with animals. In "Big as Texas" his attempts to milk a cow get him kicked every time, he keeps having close encounters with [[SquirrelsInMyPants squirrels]] and other problems. Even the [[SpeaksFluentAnimal Tongue of Saiping]] can't help.
* On ''WesternAnimation/MiloMurphysLaw,'' this can sometimes result from [[HereditaryCurse Murphy's Law]], either on [[BornUnlucky Milo]] or [[TheJinx those around him]]. Duck attacks are apparently common enough that the family [[CrazyPrepared casually prepares for them]], and the CowboyEpisode has a normally calm horse wildly try to dislodge Milo from its back.
* In an episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Freakazoid}}'', Dexter is greeted by a man named Lonnie Tallbutt. Upon seeing Lonnie, Dexter's cat freaks out and tries to jump out the window, only to crash into the glass and fall to the ground. Lonnie explains that animals don't like him. Possibly justified seeing that he turns out to be a werewolf.
* Bart and Lisa experience this sometimes in ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''.
* One episode of ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'' involves [[TheGrimReaper Death]] trying to ask out a woman who works at a pet store. The moment he walks through the door, all of the animals in the store go nuts and begin barking/hissing/cawing at him.
** Even though Brian himself is an animal, he's had plenty of beef with other, non-sapient animals, especially squirrels; he's also been attacked by tigers, sharks, wolves and gorillas; in one episode, he even admits he only visits the zoo to [[KickTheDog mock the captive animals]], which does him no favors.
* Oscar Proud from ''WesternAnimation/TheProudFamily'' is attacked by animals regularly; the show's opening ends with his mother's dog biting him during the family photo, and one of the very first episodes had him getting swarmed by cardinals during a night out.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'' episode "The Time Traveler's Pig", in one of the alternate timelines, Waddles is actively resisting against Pacifica when she wins him. Later, she is seen being pecked by a chicken.
* Done with a specific animal in the ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog'' episode "Sonic is Running": When Dr. Robotnik runs for President of Mobius, Wes Weasely, his campaign manager, suggests getting a dog for PR. Robotnik initially refuses, saying that "Canines detest [him], and it's mutual", so they build him a robotic dog. It bites his foot when he tells it to heel.
* Gayle of ''WesternAnimation/BobsBurgers'' is an interesting take on the CrazyCatLady trope due to the fact she has multiple cats yet all they seem to hate her. It doesn't help that Gayle's shown to be a very bad pet owner so it's no wonder her cats don't like her. One cat in particular, Mr. Business, really doesn't like Gayle which makes sense since she obliviously stole him from someone's porch assuming he was abandoned. Unlike most examples, Gayle's cats aren't constantly attacking her but are frequently disinterested in her presence. She even admits Mr. Business hates the sound of her voice, but doesn't pick up on the obvious dislike of her overall.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheGhostAndMollyMcGee'': While Scratch can make himself InvisibleToNormals, animals (including [[EvilDetectingDog dogs]], cats, and livestock) can always see him, and tend to react negatively to his presence.
