Owen Wilson also consciously referenced their relationship, commenting that it felt like he and Coogan were "kinda in our own buddy comedy", that their characters "definitely have the biggest friendship", and referring to Coogan/Octavius as his "miniature partner in crime". (Those can be taken as they may, but actor input can be important- all these can be found on Website/YouTube or by doing some digging.) Both Coogan and Wilson are known ho yay users, with Wilson a popular choice in buddy movies (almost all of his films with Ben Driller rely on some ho yay), and Coogan having a very particular British humor that commonly pokes fun at up yay (in his movie Around the World in 80 Days, his character has what can only be described as some sort of art dream while dressed as a woman (in context, as a disguise). After being hit in the head, he feverishly says- “Please, please. You must him. My husband will be home soon.” His character later became involved with his love interest/female lead, but the ho yay was there. In the same movie, while dressed as a woman, he also tried to get out of being recognized by flirting with the man chasing him.) On the official Night at the Museum Facebook and Twitter pages (especially Twitter) continuously reference the pair as "best friends", one post going so far as to call it the "bromance of the century". On one of the pages, there is a picture of their faces split into one of those best-friend-broken-heart necklace things (yah know, that girls wear typically), with the heading "best enemies (enemies is scribbled out) friends". The others include an epic back-to-back stance for "best friends day", a sort of texting-like conversation "between friends", one that reads "make enemies into friends", and numerous others, including a still shot of the hand scene in the ventilation shaft captioned “When your friend gets a little too needy”. (On the topic of actor/producer/director input, note that if you watch the director's commentary and speed up to the scene with the hands, no comment is given, and if you go further to when Octavius starts his comments on Lancelot, Levy describes the following- “Coming up next is some edgy improv by Steve Coogan in which Octavius is in some weird way attracted to Lancelot. Here on set I like to give the actors a bit of freedom to try different things, and one of the lasting jokes become this weird man crush on Lancelot.” Take that as one may, but with the definition of man crush being what it is- an admiration thing less than it is a romantic/sexual thing- it's tricky to decipher the meaning behind those lines. This is interesting because another scene-picture on Facebook from the page showed the scene with Lancelot's eyes and is captioned “No man's beauty can come between Octavius and his victory.” Since beauty has different connotations and meanings, it's tricky to decipher what it means. But, following under Levy’s man crush comment, it still falls into the realm of admiration (one can admire beauty without wanting to bang haha). It makes sense if one really looks at the characters and knows the stories behind them. In the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, one of Lancelot's main character traits is that he is incredibly handsome. He was a man's man and was regarded as the most beautiful in Camelot, even by Arthur and his fellow knights. Levy even calls Lancelot/Dan Stevens “handsome” in one of his interviews. It also makes sense since both Octavius and Lancelot are the warrior type, and admiration between warriors would be a common and almost expected thing (take Drax's reaction to Thor in Avengers: Infinity War, for example, a confirmed man crush by the actor). Especially since the Romans found human beauty to be captivating and actually viewed beauty/attractiveness as a mark of character and status. The historical Octavius was known to be rather insecure with his own appearance, so a layer of jealousy may have been put into play with the dynamic in the movie to reflect that. On the topic of character background, there are also the historical people the characters are based off of. Jedediah Smith- the cowboy- was based off of the historical Jedediah Strong Smith, who never married. Gaius Octavius- the Roman general- was based off of Gaius Octavius Caesar, who had three wives and was rumored to be an unfaithful womanizer- which was proven to be a story made up by his political enemies. Lancelot, too, was quite infatuated with Guinevere, wife of King Arthur, in every work he was in, so that's definitely something. (In a lot of the interviews, especially those with Shawn Levy, certain “adult humor” or “jokes for the adults” are mentioned, likely referencing this man crush dynamic as the punchline.) As for the actual content of the movie, that is even harder to decipher. In the first movie, Jedediah and Octavius begin as a typical mortal enemies character foil, and later are convinced by Larry Daley to join him in stopping the old night guards from stealing the Tablet. They seemed to decide to work together without much convincing, which leaves one to wonder of they were getting sick of fighting to begin with. During the scene where the two (accompanied by two Roman legionaries and a cowboy) pop the tire on Cecil Frederick’s getaway car, the following conversation ensues as the air from the tires begins to fling the others back. |

If the bromance text on the official page is to be believed, then this isn't that odd of a fluke, but very much ho yay in nature. It also wouldn't be that odd for Octavius, being that Romans, as well as other cultures, did not and do not put much romantic emphasis on things such as hand to hand contact. It was actually a common practice and showed that the individual trusted another (look up Roman friendship gestures and hand holding). It wasn't a taboo interaction for them. Octavius’ semi embarrassment at the whole thing could either be a interpreted as embarrassment for revealing feelings, realization that there was a culture clash, or even a bit of rejection- or perhaps it was a joke. All could be a possibility. Although, more likely than not, it was played for laughs rather than to be taken seriously. Later on, at the end of the movie when they decide to die holding hands, their hands are not clasped in the way of lovers or in a romantic way- but there is still contact that can be read as ho yay. However, in more life or death based scenarios, things like that aren't too uncommon, and may have been a seeking-comfort-from-a-close-bonded-person sort of thing, and may not have meant a specific gesture (like in Toy Story 3, where all the toys link hands when they think they are going to die). Since the outside sources (Shawn Levy) was aware of some more “edgy” bits in the movie, these bits were not mentioned and may not even have been intended to be taken so deeply. Or maybe they did. As mentioned earlier, there was Octavius’ comment on Lancelot's “hypnotic blue eyes” and later on calling him “handsome”, but for that, Levy had an explanation. While echoing with admiration and awe, Octavius’ voice did not really sound lusty or crushy, nor did he display any symptoms of having a more heart-fluttering crush. Note also when Jed gives Octavius a look after he comments on Lancelot's eyes. Some have said it was a look of confusion, concern, or even just Wilson's reaction at the quip, played up for comedy. Based on context and how most man crushes are perceived/interpreted by others, it maye have been surprise, since most men are very hush hush when it comes to things like that. It should also be brought up that Jedediah referee to Octavius once as "buddy" and once as "brother", so that's confusing. (It seems really odd that the actors wouldn't be on the same page with something like this, so it makes sense that it was likely accidental ho yay.) But, who knows? All we have are the words of the creators, so this one can probably be taken either way. However, judging by all the details, it almost looks like this particular ho yay situation may have been intended to be covered up, or at least accidental in terms of meaning. Plus, the movie came out on the heels of How to Train Your Dragon 2, a fresh movie with a character confirmed to be more than just “ho yay”. That and the timing of the film may have made sensitivity to the ho yay a bit more tuned.) If the director and actors’ comments are to be believed, then they were aware of the vibes- and may have been trying to cover them up or in the least wanted to explain them, judging by their explanations. Still, being such a small franchise in comparison to other things, it is unlikely that most would have read, watched, or seen all of the comments. Perhaps, the best way to look at this ho yay is a clear cut yay or nay, depending on the individual's interpretation. Maybe it was intentional, maybe it was not. Maybe it was allowed, or maybe they tried to cover it up. Maybe they were making a statement, or maybe it was for comedy. |
