Context FurryConfusion / AnimeAndManga

Go To

* ''Manga/AfricaSalaryman'': Most of the main characters look like furries, but non-anthropomorphic animals exist too. What add even more confusion is that animals that talk but don't look anthropomorphic also exist. In one episode Toucan spends a mixer night mistakenly thinking the pig wearing clothes sitting across from him is a girl when in reality it was actually a normal pig and the pet of his date that never showed up.
* One of the [=CDs=] for the ''Literature/{{Anpanman}}'' anime features Currypanman, a superhero made from curry bread, [[https://youtu.be/Y3hwagaPl58 singing a song about curry.]]
* In ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'', Sajin Komamura is an anthropomorphic canine with a wolf's head. [[GentleGiant He owns a pet dog and likes watching dog shows]].
** [[spoiler: As of 583 we have further confusion with the revelation that Komamura's grandfather is a a gigantic, non-anthropomorphic canine, who is apparently none-too-pleased at Komamura's former shame at hiding his appearance.]] We later learn that [[spoiler:Komamura comes from a clan of werebeasts.]]
* There's an animated short movie named ''Buta'', in which the main character, an anthropomorphic pig, is deadly afraid of cats. The oddest thing about this is the fact he has a henchwoman who is an ''anthropomorphic cat'' and he never seems to mind her on the slightest.
* In ''Anime/TheCatReturns'', ordinary housecats are extremely spooked and agitated at the arrival of a parade from the Cat Kingdom, containing cats that, aside from walking on two legs and holding things, look exactly like normal cats. This is made funny when anthropomorphic [[StealthPun tuxedo cats]], bouncers, stomp around and bully the riffraff away.
* Being that the Digital World and Real World are entirely separate entities, this is inevitable in pretty much every ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}'' canon, with both animals and animal-inspired Digimon sort of coexisting. One of the best examples comes from ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'', where Kari has both an actual pet cat, Meeko, and is partnered with Gatomon, a cat Digimon; the two don't appear to ever meet though. Also, while fish-based Digimon do exist, Gomamon's Marching Fishes attack appears to summon real fish, even in the Digital World.
* In Eden's Bowy, Ms. Nyako, a humanoid catwoman, is absolutely shocked to hear a talking white leopard (secretly the goddess Enefea, who had been punished by her father, the god Lumezavia, to be trapped in such a form.)
-->'''Ms. Nyako''': What?! The cat spoke?!
* ''Manga/{{Doraemon}}''
** ''Anime/DoraemonNobitaAndTheKnightsOnDinosaurs'' is mostly set in the underground world of Enriru, where dinosaurs escaped cataclysm 65 million years ago and have been living BeneathTheEarth ever since. Some of the dinosaurs, such as velociraptors (including the gang's new ally Banhou, the titular dinosaur knight) have evolved to a sentient, humanoid form having their own language and technology, but most of the dinosaurs retains their feral nature from 65 million years ago. Even the raptor-men knights use non-sapient raptors as steeds, for some reason.
** More or less justified in ''Anime/DoraemonNobitaAndTheSpiralCity'', an installment of the Doraemon movies set in a planet of LivingToys. Most of the toy animals are non-sentient and behaves like an animal would (including Shizuka's stuffed monkey Wooky, and Gian's giant NotZilla plushie Goji-chan) but there are sentient, intelligent toy animals like Pibu and Popi the toy pigs (the former being the toy's mayor), and the two resident scientists Ain Motain the stuffed cow and Thomas Meedison the sheep whose inventions are put to good use for the toy city's industrial developments. As Nobita finds out after encountering the Sower (the god-like being who made the planet in the first place), turns out it's the Sower who ''bestowed'' sentience and intelligence on certain toys.
* ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'' {{lampshades}} this when [[MoeAnthropomorphism China and Japan]] are discussing Franchise/HelloKitty's pet cat, Charmy, mentioned below in the Collectables section. Japan thinks it's cute while China is noticeably disturbed by the idea, though not for the reason one might think:
-->'''China''': Is it true that [[Franchise/HelloKitty Kitty-chan]] is raising a pet cat, [[VerbalTic aru]]!?\
'''Japan''': Yes, it's true. Kitty-chan raises a Persian cat...Isn't it cute that a cat would own a cat?\
'''China''': ...She's only a cat and yet [[EmergencyFoodSupplyAnimal she's raising emergency rations...]]
* In ''Manga/HyperPolice'', the main character Natsuki Sasahara is a cat girl who lives with several dozen cats. Likely subverted by the fact that she is half cat goddess; her mother is the Egyptian sun goddess Bastet.
* One episode of ''Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa'' involved a colony of penguins on a motorized ice floe taking over Dream Land after their own home was destroyed. Wait a minute, isn't King Dedede also a penguin?[[note]]It should be noted that those same penguins appear as enemies in some of the Kirby games as it is.[[/note]] Though Escargo([[SpellMyNameWithAnS o]])n does call the Wandering Pengi "Your Majesty's relatives", at least in Japanese.
** The anime frequently features non-sentient fish. One recurring character, Kine, is a talking fish. A late episode has a slightly disturbing scene where Kine tries talking to some of the main characters while they're ''[[CarnivoreConfusion fishing]]''. He doesn't seem to understand why this is a bad time for a chat. Then they explain that he could end up as sushi if he sticks around, and he's naturally terrified. On that note, the episode in which Kine was introduced[[hottip:*:well, EarlyBirdCameo aside]] included a scene where Chef Kawasaki tried to cook him and feed him to a customer.
** Escargo([[SpellMyNameWithAnS o]])n has been shown on various occasions to be less than happy about the fact that some people eat molluscs, including snails. Nobody else seems to have a problem with the idea, despite the existence of snail-people. At one point, Dedede even offers Escargon some of the shellfish that he's eating - Escargon refuses for obvious reasons.
* It has been thoroughly pointed-out that the animal-characters on ''Manga/NagasareteAirantou'' look nothing like the animals everywhere else in the world. Meimei makes costumes of the said real animals, drawn rather realistically for effect, that scare animal-characters of purportedly the ''same species''.
* In ''Anime/{{Naruto}}'', there are talking dogs like Pakkun and non-talking dogs like Akamaru. The strange thing is that both seem to be of about the same intelligence (Akamaru can actually use Jutsu) but only one can speak the human tongue. Possibly justified in that Pakkun is a summoned animal (who all seem to talk, being mystical creatures and all) while Akamaru is just a normal dog. Well, normal aside from the fact that he's trained in ninjutsu.
** One omake has Naruto lampshade Pakkun speaking (who apparently was taught by Kakashi to do so) to Kiba (who can understand Akamaru's barks). The latter confirms that Akamaru will eventually be able to speak human like the other dogs in his clan, but whether it comes naturally or with outside aid is left ambiguous. Akamaru then tries to speak to Naruto. His first words; [[spoiler: Meow]].
* Very easily {{Hand Wave}}d due to the nature of ''Manga/OnePiece''. This is slightly averted for all Zoan type Devil Fruit users, who are animal-humans, but is played fairly straight with Tony Tony Chopper the human-reindeer.
** Some creatures are still of very questionable species, however, seeming to be neither human nor animal and yet not stated as Zoan-types either, such as Hamburg from the Foxy Pirates, who seems to be a Gorilla-man but is otherwise not shown to be a zoan-type user.
** This trope was also [[InvertedTrope inverted]] by the starfish Papagg, who is just a starfish species usually kept by the fishmen and mer-folk as non-sapient pets. [[AchievementsInIgnorance Papagg believed he was sapient when he was young, and learned the speech of the Fishmen/Mer-folk because he didn't know that he wasn't supposed to.]] He then became a successful clothing-line designer. His *own* FurryConfusion caused him to go from animal to TalkingAnimal.
** The Mink tribe plays with it a little, but generally manages to avoid it: Any animal with actual fur can have a mink, and they're an entirely separate species from humans (though they do think humans are some kind of furless monkey mink). The meat-eaters among them apparently eat any furless animals, as they don't have minks. While it includes reptiles and birds, as expected, it also includes ''hippos'', which are mammals and would confuse the matter if "furless" wasn't the explicit thing. The apparently bird-mink Morgans was revealed to be a Zoan-fruit user, constantly transformed in his Albatros form.
* The intro to ''Anime/ParappaTheRapper'' has Parappa giving flowers to his crush, Sunny Funny. Sunny is an anthropomorphic sunflower herself.
* Normally, when a talking Pokémon is shown in the ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'' anime, some kind of explanation is given, preventing this trope from occurring. For example, Team Rocket’s Meowth is shown to have learned human language to impress his love interest. But there are others that fall squarely into this territory:
** The Season 1 episode “The Ghost of Maiden’s Peak” had a talking, shapeshifting Gastly. No explanation is given, and no other Gastly in the anime ever does this.
** ''Anime/PokemonTheMovie2000'' introduced a talking Slowking. Once again, it’s never established why he can talk, and when we see other Slowking in the anime they don’t seem especially intelligent.
** Lucario is introduced in ''Anime/PokemonLucarioAndTheMysteryOfMew'' as a wise and intelligent creature, serving as an equal partner to a human in addition to being capable of telepathic speech. In the anime, while still portrayed as intelligent to some degree, it’s depicted in the same animalistic fashion as most other Pokémon, leading to the rather jarring image of Ash’s Lucario eating Pokémon chow.
* In an episode of ''Anime/SonicX'' , Sonic runs into a normal hedgehog. Then again, Sonic comes from another dimension and looks absolutely nothing like a hedgehog...
* In ''Anime/SuzysZooDaisukiWitzy'', there are two turtles named Teeter and Totter that are zoomorphic. However, the show is said to be set in the same universe as the main ''Suzy's Zoo''[[note]]official artwork of Witzy meeting Suzy Ducken confirms this[[/note]], where there's an anthropomorphic turtle named Corky.
%% * In the manga ''Wa!,'' there's a [[http://www.mangareader.net/wa/12/18 scene]] in which ThoseTwoGirls engage in a SeinfeldianConversation which quickly turns into ConversationalTroping regarding this trope and CarnivoreConfusion.
* Inverted in the hentai manga ''Milk Party!'' with what can be called MoeAnthropomorphism Confusion. A boy's parents buy a cow girl to use for fresh milk, and see nothing wrong with her wearing only a bra and panties, feeding her grass, and milking her despite looking similar to them. Then he puts a human-eared headband on her thanks to a dare from his friend and feels weird, to the point of calling it bestiality, that he sees her as a pretty girl with pale skin as a result. Even weirder, she appears to be non-sapient, yet is able to initiate sex with him (probably thinking he's some kind of bull) and have a kid.
* ''Anime/OddTaxi'': Odokawa is seen interacting with a non-anthropomorphic cat in the show's opening theme even though it takes place in a WorldOfFunnyAnimals including anthro cats. [[spoiler:The confusion is cleared up in the final episode when it is confirmed that the characters are actually humans [[ThroughTheEyesOfMadness seen through Odokawa's damaged brain]]]].
