2* In the stage show, Claude's decision to go to Vietnam instead of dodging the draft can seem odd...he hints during "Manchester England" that he isn't all that fulfilled with the hippie lifestyle, and "Where Do I Go?" expresses his confusion over his destiny and his purpose in life. But it still seems like an awfully long leap from his previous hippie life to submitting to be drafted off to a war that he's previously opposed, with at least an even chance of getting killed. But then you realize...he makes the decision to go after Berger says that the tribe will smuggle him to Canada after the anti-war demonstration. Claude probably realizes then and there (and an actor can easily convey this) that he'd be risking his friends' freedom if they aid a draft-dodger. He probably figures, "look, if I go to Vietnam, maybe I'll get wounded, maybe I'll get killed...but at least it's just ''me'' and no one else. But if my friends get caught trying to sneak me out of the country, they'll ALL face pretty stiff prison terms...and for them, that's a FateWorseThanDeath." So he makes the sacrifice for the sake of his tribe, his friends, to whom he's been closer than to his own family.
