! Clefairy Line

!! Morphs [Oak Catalogue #]

* Cleffa [#173]
** A small, pink, star-shaped creature.
* Clefairy [#035]
** A pink creature closely resembling a fairy, with stocky arms and ears with brown tips on the end.
* Clefable [#036]
** A slightly larger version of the above, but with wings.

!! Notable Biology

All three forms are primarily nocturnal. Although they can and will fight during the day, the Pokémon Care Group suggests not having them out for too long in direct sunlight; this is so they don't harm their eyes, which aren't really adapted to strong sunlight.

Despite the latter two evolutions of this creature having wings, they cannot fly. A popular legend (and one that has found its way into older Pokédex databases) is that they [[PowerFloats store moonlight in their vestigial wings to help them float]]. This theory becomes preposterous when one remembers that 'moonlight' is merely sunlight reflected off of the moon. Instead, they bounce masterfully, using their sensitive ears to judge air currents that would allow them to glide for long periods.

Another remarkable (but by no means unique) ability the line has is [[ConfusionFu Metronome]]. The effects of this ability - seemingly random moves that the line should not be able to possess are used - have led to the line being heavily associated with magic; this association is the source of the line's name.

Finally, Clefable has super-sensitive hearing and can hear a trainer from several miles away. This has led to this form rarely being documented in the wild, only being seen by wilderness wanderers on moonlit nights by lakes.

!! Habitat

The majority of Clefable can be found around Mount Moon, near Pewter City. Meteorites containing Moon Stones - which are essential for the Clefairy-Clefable evolution - fall into the region at unusually high frequencies, which makes it the perfect spot. The quiet, rarely travelled mountain roads north of the area are also appealing to this timid species.

Clefairy have also been found around Mount Coronet in Sinnoh. A local legend there has it that if a woman finds a large group of Clefairy while walking in the mountains, she will soon become pregnant.

!! Diet

The Clefairy line has never been seen eating in the wild, and will quite happily eat anything its trainer gives it.

!! Hazards

Being extremely docile creatures, there is little hazard in keeping a Clefairy or any of its other forms. However, it is recommended that the trainer keeps an eye on the Moon, as it has been demonstrated (and one of the few legends to have basis in fact) that this line's behaviour is affected by the Moon.

During a New Moon, one may notice one's Clefairy (although the following applies to Cleffa and Clefable as well) to be much more passive than usual. It will respond to commands during battle, but at any other time, it will prefer to sit perfectly still, not doing anything. While the Moon is waxing, the Clefairy becomes more congenial and active. While the Moon is waning, the Clefairy will be apathetic and a little touchy. It would be best not to ask it to do much during this time.

The Full Moon is the time when most Clefairy sightings in the wild occur, and the best time to catch them. They are very active during this period, and will do things that they don't normally do at any other time, such as find the most mundane things amusing, stare at things while smiling, and [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny generally display traits]] that one would expect from [[NoSocialSkills a person suffering from Asperger's Syndrome]]. Indeed, it would be highly accurate to call them 'loony', in the true sense of the word. [[note]]The words "loony" and "lunatic" are derived from the word "luna", which is used to refer to the moon. In ancient times, people believed that the moon could cause insanity, especially when it was full. Since the Clefairy line is closely associated with the Moon, and the Moon ''does'' influence their behavior as described above, this original definition of "loony" is quite fitting for them.[[/note]]

In addition to the behavior described in the above paragraph, Clefairy (but not the other two morphs) seem to become kleptomaniacs during a full moon. This has led to a... particular practice in Pewter City that would seem paranoid [[ProperlyParanoid without proper context]]; for one night a month, Pewter City's inhabitants will lock their doors as best they can in order to prevent the Clefairy from making off with their belongings. Pewter City denizens have also been known to leave unwanted gifts outside their homes on the first full moon after Christmas. It is unknown what the Clefairy do with these items, but recently, hikers have found FanonPokedex/{{Sandshrew}} stuck in coffee makers and FanonPokedex/{{Ekans}} tangled in toast racks on mountain roads.

Another behaviour to watch out for is Cleffa's behaviour around meteor showers; they become highly energetic and determined to track the meteorites to their landing site. It is best to keep Cleffa in their Pokéballs during this time, lest they run away and try to find where the meteors will land. When one finds such a runaway Cleffa, it will probably be snuggling close to the meteor. This, for a short while, fueled the theory that this line comes from the Moon or space, but this has been disregarded by science (not that it stops some fringe theorists).

!! Courting and Childrearing

Clefairy courtship rituals have never been seen in the wild, but Pokémon breeders have found that, in captivity at least, most copulation takes place on the full moon, or around that period. The female tries to attract the male with gifts (the female/male ratio in the species is unbalanced towards the former), which may explain the kleptomania outlined above. If the male accepts, they mate that night and for that night only. If the female fails, the present is discarded, and she tries again next month with a different gift, maybe for the same target, or a different one.

Cleffa are kept extremely well hidden from predators such as [[FanonPokedex/{{Spearow}} Fearow]], and were only discovered to exist relatively recently, after a meteor fell near Pewter City. The only times Cleffa have been seen outside their nests are immediately after meteor showers; the Cleffa will gather around intact meteors, and are quickly collected by a group of Clefable.

!! Social Structure

Clefairy and its morphs mostly live in large, maternal groups, with males kept on the sideline for breeding purposes and not much else. They could be said to be 'separate, but equal' to the females. A Matron Clefable leads the colony.

It has been observed that, on the first full Moon after Midsummer (or on Midsummer, if that happens to be a full Moon), the Matron will bring all the males in the colony to a large clearing near the nest. Only one such exodus has been documented so far, up the side of Mount Moon, but there may be more to the north. The purpose of this seems to be sharing the males between the colonies, to ensure genetic diversity.
